The front door clicked shut, sealing out the cool night air, and the sudden quiet of the flat settled over him like a heavy blanket. Giles leaned back against the wood for a moment, taking off his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose.
It had been an extraordinary evening. A real date. No unexpected apocalypses, no tracking vampires through muddy cemeteries, just the two of them.
As he hung up his coat, a subtle, sweet fragrance drifted up from the wool of his jumper. He paused, his hand hovering over the coat rack. It was unmistakably Buffy’s perfume—a light, floral scent with a hint of vanilla warmth that had lingered on him after their parting embrace at her doorstep.
Giles looked around the empty hallway, a sudden, unfamiliar wave of sentimentality overtaking his usual reserve. Slowly, almost tentatively, he lifted the collar of the heavy knit jumper to his face and took a deep breath.
The scent immediately brought the whole evening back into sharp focus: the soft glow of the restaurant candlelight, the way she laughed at his terribly dry jokes, and the brilliant, unclouded smile she had given him under the porch light. It was intoxicating.
He didn't drop the fabric. Instead, he closed his eyes and inhaled again, deeply, anchoring himself to the memory. And then another. He stood there in the quiet hallway, entirely unbothered by how uncharacteristic the behavior might seem to an outside observer, completely focused on capturing every remaining trace of her presence.
With each consecutive breath, however, the fragrant notes began to thin. The vivid floral sharpness faded into the familiar, mundane scent of laundry detergent and old wool. He took one final, long breath, burying his nose into the knit, but it was gone. The air was just air again.
Giles lowered his hands, letting the collar settle back into place. A faint, self-conscious smile touched his lips in the dark hallway. Adjusting his glasses, he turned and walked toward the kitchen to put the kettle on, the warmth of the evening still thoroughly intact.
