Work Text:

Martha hurriedly shook off her doctor’s jacket, revealing the bright red tank top and black jeans she wore. She pulled the plastic devil horns from her backpack, pushing them into the coils of her afro, before she hopped off of the bus. It was her first Halloween Party at University, since in First Year she’d been busy trying to not be overwhelmed by family management on the phone, and lecture readings.

Her friends David and Vivianne were already there, having placements on the B schedule, whereas she was A. Luckily, it was a house party in a flat she’d visited before, or it would’ve been a right nightmare trying to find it. Her geography was good, but the layout of London student housing was not.

Viv had said that Martha’s planned outfit was “lame”, but she wasn’t willing to commit to another 2 bus journeys to go back to her houseshare, get changed, and come back. She didn’t want to be that late.

She could hear the party before she even reached the house, and some part of her regretted agreeing to come. Hopefully it wouldn’t be anything like her Mum’s parties that her and Tish had to help host. She could probably excuse herself, anyway. Besides, hopefully they’ll have good food, and drinks.

Martha arrived at the doorway, where the door was propped open by a physics textbook, and stepped over the threshold. The house itself seemed to be shaking with the beat, and Martha followed the sound into a living room crammed with individuals. She couldn’t spot Viv or David, but there was a kitchen off to the side, and a drink sounded like an excellent idea. And an easy enough location for them to track her down.

The kitchen was noticeably quieter than the rest of the house, despite the door being open. There was someone else in the kitchen, a woman in a costume about as high effort as Martha’s- ripped blue jeans, a slightly torn shirt, and some fake blood splattered on top. She was pretty. She had dark brown eyes that felt as if they were piercing Martha, and blue braids coiled on top of her head.
Martha realised that she was staring, so she quickly turned to the drinks, grabbing a bottle of Tesco own brand vodka and pink lemonade.

As she poured the vodka, she saw a darker hand grab the lemonade, and pour it into the glass. Martha looked up, and the woman winked at her, before capping the bottle. She could feel her cheeks burning, and hoped that her skin’s darkening wasn’t noticeable.
“Wow,” she spoke softly, before freezing.

The woman laughed, a rich sound that made Martha’s heart flutter, “I’m Kiera, and you are?” She sounded vaguely American, but not anywhere Martha could place.
“Martha Jones,” she took a sip from her drink, to steal her nerves, “studying to be a Doctor, hopefully. And you?
“Biochemistry PhD”

Oh. She was cool too.

“Shall we see if we have some biochemistry?” Kiera smirked, and Martha couldn’t help but feel charmed.
She took another sip, and nodded, “I’m always up for a biology lesson.”
