Work Text:

The Braids Incident

A sudden scream erupted in the Victors Village making Katniss instantly get up out of bed after choosing to sleep in, thinking it was just gonna be another quiet weekend before the sound had her sprinting down the stairs. Moving as fast as possible as it came from the inside her own home, heart sinking as she knew exactly who was the one to unleash such a vicious vocal.

“Prim!” Katniss shouted as she scoured each room in the large house. “Prim?”

“In here.” Peeta responded to her panicked pleas from the bathroom, Katniss rushing there before stopping at the open doorway only to look at the scene in confusion.

There Prim stood looking in the bathroom mirror with trauma in her eyes, her blonde hair a complete nest of mess that was little ropes all tied and twisted all over the place. Peeta sat on the edge of the bathtub with his elbows on his knees and hands on his face, only to uncover it as he sat up straight to look up at Katniss showing his guilt to her.

“What happened?” Katniss asked once she’d gotten over her initial shock and walked over behind Prim, not able to help but look at the disaster on her little sister’s head before meeting her eyes in the mirror.

Prim had a frown on her face as she answered. “Peeta did it.”

Katniss' eyes widened and she quickly spun around to look at Peeta, giving him a gaze so sharp he raised his hands protectively as if he’d actually get cut. “I was just trying to learn how to braid hair, so I asked Prim if I could practice on her.” He quickly but calmly explained himself.

“Is she your first victim?” Katniss retorted sarcastically before turning back to Prim to look over the damage done to her hair.

“Okay.” Peeta replied in defeat, knowing he messed up and quickly removed himself from the room as Katniss got to work on fixing Prim’s hair.

The Bread Incident

Peeta was coming back from visiting his family in town only to see smoke coming from Katniss’s house as soon as he walked into Victors Village, making him bolt towards it as fast as he could, worried for all those who may be inside and in trouble.

“Katniss! Prim!” Peeta shouted, as he got closer he saw that the smoke was coming from the ground floor in the kitchen, the windows to it open and letting the smoke out. Flying through the front door Peeta made his way into the kitchen only to see both girls he was worried about, waving dish towels all over the place to try and clear the smoke from the room while the oven only produced more for them.

He quickly took action as he grabbed a spare dish towel from the kitchen table and covered the bottom half of his face before going over to the oven and turning it off, closing the door to it right after so no more smoke could come out and fill the room.

“Damnit!” Katniss shouted, annoyed at herself once the kitchen was mostly clear of smoke.

“What happened?” Peeta asked as he looked to and from the two Everdeen sisters.

Both were silent for a few seconds before Prim finally spoke up. “Katniss did it.”

The older Everdeen looked at the younger with undeserved betrayal. “What?”

“I told you not to use too much flour.” Prim said to her defensively with a shrug.

“Flour for what?” Peeta quickly asked, trying to figure out what happened before the sister’s bickering could escalate any further.

Katniss sighed and rubbed her forehead in exhaustion before she gestured to the black and charred lump sitting on the oven tray atop the kitchen table. “I was just trying to learn how to make bread, so I asked Prim if she could show me how.”

Prim suddenly looked back at Katniss, her brows creased with anger. “I did! But you ignored my instructions because as always you think you know better, even when you don’t.”

Both Katniss and Peeta were stunned and silenced by Prim’s outburst, The young girl never got mad at anyone, never mind them. Before they could get over their shared surprise Prim had already stomped out of the kitchen.

The Aftermath

In the living room she was laid out across a couch while reading a book on medicine and her cat Buttercup curled up on top of her, Prim, was finally at her most relaxed after the chaotic week she had been through. She felt bad for her outburst the other day but still wasn’t ready to apologise for it yet, to Katniss for directing it at her and Peeta for having to witness it.

Her attention was suddenly taken from the book in her hands as she looked up and saw the two people she was thinking about walk into the room, stopping to stand side by side with an identical nervous look plastered on their faces. Before Prim could ask what was going on they spoke up.

“We want to apologise.” Peeta started.

“We haven’t been the best role models lately.” Katniss adding on.

“We took you for granted.”

“We didn’t appreciate the help you gave us.”

“We’re sorry.” They both ended, saying it together.

Prim was surprised to say the least, here she was thinking she was in the wrong for lashing out only for the two victors to walk in and justify it by admitting it was their fault instead. So for once she decided to take advantage of the situation and put on her most hurt and innocent look. “I guess I could forgive you guys.”

Peeta fell for it first. “We’ll make it up to you.”

Katniss followed. “We’ll do anything.”

A slow smirk graced Prim’s lips from having them now wrapped around her finger. “Peeta, could you take me to The Hob when you’re not busy?”

“Yeah, you got it.” Peeta happily agreed.

Prim then looked at her big sister. “Katniss, you can give Buttercup his bath.”

“What?” Katniss deadpanned before Peeta gave her a reminding nudge in the arm. “I mean yeah…sure.”

“Great.” Giggled Prim as they both accepted their penance for mistreating her, she could get used to this.
