the tale of the new creator, Makoto neagi.

Summary:

In the heart of a ring of impassable mountains lies the Great Forest , split cleanly in two: the peaceful, flower-strewn White Woods and the monster-ridden, shadowy Dark Woods.
When Makoto Naegi tumbles down a mountain trail and wakes up trapped under a bright red hood, he has no idea that his quest to find the Forest Spirit will spark a chain reaction across realms. Armed only with a trapped fire spirit in a lantern, Makoto sets out toward the Towering Tree.
But deep within the White Woods, another human named Hajime Hinata lives a quiet life, entirely unaware that a failed spell has bound his soul to Izuru Kamakura—the legendary, blood-soaked Inugami demon who stalks the Dark Woods by night.
As the boundaries between light and shadow begin to dissolve, the fate of the Great Forest rests on an ancient war, a hidden tragedy among the noble dragons, and a fragile hope waiting to awaken.

Chapter 1: The Red Hood and the Lantern Fire

Chapter Text

The ground was entirely too soft, and it smelled distinctly of crushed mint and starlight.

Makoto Naegi blinked against the gentle, iridescent luminescence filtering through a canopy of oversized, silver-veined leaves. He rubbed his aching head, sitting up slowly on a bed of vibrant moss. He was definitely not on the mountain trail anymore. There were no jagged rocks here. Instead, towering trees with bark like polished marble stretched into a lavender sky, identifying this strange place as the fabled White Woods.

"Oh, thank goodness, you're awake!"

Makoto jumped, his gaze dropping to a small, delicate figure sitting on a nearby tree root. The youth wore a green, tunic-style vest and possessed large, anxious hazel eyes.

"I'm Chihiro," the small traveler said, offering a timid but warm smile. "You had a really nasty fall from the upper ridges. Travelers usually don't survive a tumble into the Great Forest without drawing the attention of... well, much hungrier things."

"I'm Makoto. Makoto Naegi," he replied, shaking off the residual dizziness. "I was just hiking, and then the path gave out. I need to find a way back home. Do you know the way out?"

Chihiro’s smile faded into a look of deep pity. "Leaving isn't simple, Makoto. The forest doesn't like to let go of what falls into it. But if you're going to try, you'll need protection." Chihiro reached into a woven satchel and pulled out a brilliant, crimson fabric. "Here. It's a special red hood. It is woven with defensive magic to keep the lesser shadow beasts from tracking your scent."

"Wow, thank you so much!" Makoto smiled warmly, pulling the bright red hood over his messy brown hair. "See? My luck is already turning around. I'm sure I'll find the Forest Spirit and get everything sorted out in no time."

"HALT! NOITERING IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED IN THE TRANQUIL SECTOR OF THE WHITE WOODS!"

A booming voice shattered the serene atmosphere. From the brush burst a tall young man with piercing red eyes, an immaculately pressed white uniform, and a pair of long, snow-white rabbit ears protruding from his dark hair. They twitched with absolute authority. "Kiyomaru!" Chihiro squeaked, taking a step back.

"It is Kiyotaka Ishimaru! Rule Enforcer and Guardian Page of the Border Patrol!" the rabbit-shifter corrected loudly, marching over with rigid, robotic steps. He pointed a finger directly at Makoto. "Citizen! Your attire is remarkably vibrant, which violates Subsection 4 of the Camouflage Act! Furthermore, unguided wandering poses a severe safety hazard! Explain your presence immediately!" "I'm lost!" Makoto said honestly, raising his hands in a peaceful gesture. "I just want to get back to my world. I was hoping to head toward the center of the woods."

Kiyotaka crossed his arms, his white rabbit ears pinning back strictly. "An impossible venture for an unescorted human! The path ahead leads directly to the boundary line where the light fails. However, honesty is a commendable virtue! I shall allow you to proceed to the edge under caution, but you must move with utmost discipline!"

With Ishimaru barking out strict pacing orders every ten steps, Makoto navigated the deepening woods. The silver trees slowly gave way to gnarled, twisting trunks, and the pale lavender sky began to bleed into a heavy, suffocating ink black. They had reached the absolute edge of the White Woods.

"This is as far as my jurisdiction allows," Kiyotaka stated, stopping at a line of glowing white stones embedded in the dirt. "Beyond lies the Dark Woods. Step carefully, Naegi! Breaking the boundary rules carries a death sentence from the beasts on the other side!"

"Thanks, Ishimaru. I'll be careful!" Makoto waved, his boundless optimism keeping his feet moving forward even as the air grew freezing cold. As he stepped past the boundary stones, the silence of the Dark Woods swallowed him. The shadows seemed to reach for his new red hood, but Chihiro's magic kept them at bay. Just as Makoto began to wonder if he should turn back, a faint, flickering orange glow caught his eye. It was trapped inside a hollow tree stump.

He approached cautiously and peered inside. Resting on the dark wood was an ornate, antique iron lantern, bound tightly by thick iron chains. Inside the glass glass-pane, instead of a normal candle flame, sat a tiny, humanoid figure made entirely of roaring orange and blue fire. The spirit had wildly spiky hair and a look of profound boredom.

"Uh, hello?" Makoto whispered.

The fire spirit snapped its head up, its eyes widening. "Holy smoke, a human! Finally! Hey, pal, look at me! I'm completely burned out sitting in this dump. Mind helping a guy out?"

"Are you okay? Who put you in there?" Makoto asked, leaning closer.

"The name's Leon Kuwata," the spirit sighed, crossing his fiery arms. "I used to be a regular guy until I ticked off the wrong person. A witch named Celeste thought it would be hilarious to trap me. Now I’m stuck playing the matchmaker for a lantern. Pretty en-light-ening backstory, huh?" Makoto winced slightly at the pun but smiled nonetheless. "Don't worry, Leon. I'm not going to leave you here. There's got to be a way to break these chains."

"Careful, dude! These chains are enchanted," Leon warned, though a spark of genuine hope flickered in his core. "You try to break 'em normally, and you'll get a total heat stroke. But hey, if you carry the lantern, maybe we can find someone who can break the curse. I'm a great travel companion. I really know how to brighten up a room."

"Alright, Leon. Let's work together," Makoto said confidently. He reached down, carefully avoiding the hot metal, and lifted the heavy lantern by its top handle. "I'm looking for a way home anyway. We'll find a way to free you, I promise."

"Man, you've got some serious spark to your attitude," Leon chuckled, settling down inside his glass cage as Makoto stepped deeper into the dark, unknown forest. "Let's get this show on the road before we run into anything with big teeth.
