Work Text:
"I'm honestly disappointed, Dazai-kun," Mori stated with a sigh as he read through the report of the last mission.
Dazai bowed his head. "I miscalculated. It won't happen again, Mori-san."
"I hope not. The mafia needs your full attention," Mori explained. Dazai was to be the boss of the Port Port someday. He couldn't have him getting distracted.
"I assure you it does." The plan would've been foolproof if it hadn't been for the ability user he hadn't accounted for. Dazai hadn't messed in years, so he was annoyed at Mori for thinking he wasn't focused when he devised his plans. One failed mission shouldn't take anything away from the hundreds of successful ones he was responsible for.
Not looking up from the report, Mori asked, "How's Atsushi-kun?"
Dazai froze. How did Mori know about Atsushi? He had made sure to be careful so he wouldn't find out about him. Dazai forced himself to smile and said, "He's fine, I guess, but I'm starting to get bored with him, so I don't think I'll be wasting my time with him much longer." Saying that even though it was a lie felt like a punch to the stomach. He would never get bored with Atsushi.
"Good." That was all Mori said before he dismissed Dazai.
Leaving the meeting, Dazai felt sick. How could he be so stupid to think he would be able to keep Atsushi's existence from Mori of all people? How much did Mori know about his boyfriend? His ability? No. If Mori knew about Atsushi's ability, he would've tried to pull him into the mafia by now, but it would only be a matter of time before he found out.
Dazai knew he should've stayed away from Atsushi from the start, but it was too late now. Even if he broke things off, Mori would still keep an eye on Atsushi.
What he needed to do was get Atsushi far away from Yokohama as quickly as possible before Mori tried to use him against him.
The mere thought of not seeing Atsushi again made Dazai's heart ache. He had met Atsushi when he was at his lowest, and if it hadn't been for him, Dazai would be here. He didn't think it was possible for one person to change one's perspective on life in a matter of days. Atsushi was the light of his life, and Dazai didn't know how he was going to live without him, but he had no choice.
Atsushi's safety would always be his number one priority.
Atsushi stared at the text message he had received from his boyfriend, 'Pack a bag'. He didn't have a good feeling about it. Atsushi didn't think it was one of Dazai's impromptu plans to visit an onsen this time or to see Odasaku. He tried calling him, but it went straight to voicemail
Could it be that The Guild was coming back? No. Dazai had promised that they'd never set foot in Yokohama again. That he would never have to worry about that bounty again.
Atsushi couldn't bring himself to pack. His nerves were getting the better of him, so he spent thirty minutes pacing around his apartment until Dazai barged through the front door.
Dazai rushed towards Atsushi and noticed right away that he hadn't packed anything. "We don't have much time," he warned as he rushed into the bedroom to pack Atsushi's things.
"Time for what?" Atsushi asked, following the brunet.
"Ango is doing me a favour, but we only have a small window," Dazai said as he started throwing some of Atsushi's clothes into a bag.
"What favour, Osamu?" Atsushi demanded. He needed Dazai to explain exactly what was going on. He never met Ango, but Atsushi knew enough about him to know how hurt Dazai had been when he found out his friend had actually been a government agent, so it made no sense why he would go to him for help.
Dazai paused what he was doing and turned to Atsushi. "Mori knows about you," he said with regret.
"So?" Atsushi didn't see what the issue was. Dazai was one of the top executives in the mafia. Why would Mori finding out about their relationship cause this type of reaction from him
Dazai reached out to Atsushi and pulled him into a hug. "He will hurt you to punish me if I fail him again. Also, there's no telling what he would do if he finds out you're the white tiger he was after two years ago."
"You wouldn't be coming with me," Atsushi whispered.
Dazai hugged Atsushi tighter. "I can't." He wished he could, but Mori would stop at nothing to find him and then would torture Atsushi in front of him as punishment for abandoning the Port Mafia, and that was something Dazai could never allow to happen.
"Then I'm not going."
"Atsu-" Dazai was about to argue when Atsushi cut him off.
"No." Atsushi asserted with tears in his eyes. What life would he have if Dazai weren't a part of it? He didn't even want to think about it.
Dazai pulled back so he could wipe away his boyfriend's tears. He hated seeing Atsushi cry. "I have to protect you," he explained, softly.
Atsushi shook his head. He didn't want to hear that Dazai was doing this for him. "But sending me away hurts us both."
"But Mori-"
"Then leave with me," Atsushi begged. That would be the only way he would leave Yokohama because he wouldn't leave Dazai behind, knowing how much he would struggle without him. That didn't seem fair, and Atsushi wished that Dazai would think about his own well-being for once.
"I can't," Dazai said, even though he wanted nothing more than to leave with Atsushi.
"Why not?"
"Because he will stop at nothing to find us," Dazai stated. Living a life on the run wasn't the type of life Atsushi deserved.
"Let's leave together, Osamu-san, please? We'll sort something out." Atsushi pleaded. He didn't care how difficult things would be once they were together.
Dazai dropped his head onto Atsushi's shoulder and mumbled, "You're making it difficult for me to say no, Atsushi-kun."
"Then don't. Can't you ask Ango-san for help?"
"I can't promise anything, but I'll talk to him." Getting Atsushi away from Yokohama was easy. He was a civilian, but Dazai was a Port Mafia executive. Would Ango risk everything to help him? Dazai wasn't so sure
It turned out that Ango was more than happy to help Dazai leave the Port Mafia. It would take time to sort everything before the plan could be set in motion. Timing was everything, and if they acted too soon, Mori would no doubt connect it to his threat on Atsushi.
It took five months. They made it seem like Dazai had been killed in an explosion. To be certain that Mori didn't suspect anything, Dazai and Atsushi spent nearly a year in hiding. Ango kept tabs on the mafia and was able to confirm that Mori did believe Dazai had died in the explosion.
Dazai and Atsushi left Japan the moment they came out of hiding. Deciding to travel the world until they found a place they wanted to call home.
