They had just always been so naturally perfect together. Like they were cut from the same cloth. Remus liked Sirius and Sirius liked Remus.
The first few years it was just them being the best of friends, spending extra time together.
Then it became a lingering touch, or eye contact so intense it made Lupin’s heart race. Made his stomach flutter. Around their fourth year, Lupin started to feel the same way about Sirius that he’d felt about the girls he'd liked over the years. And he did like girls... But he also liked Sirius...
Lupin never felt that way about James or Peter or any other boys. Just Sirius. It’s not like Sirius reminded him of a girl...not at all...he was just...Sirius...lean but strong… just tone enough for his muscles to show up against his creamy pale skin. His eyes seemed to change from blue to gray to silver depending on his mood. Lupin liked that.
During their fifth year, they had a rare moment alone one night in their dorm room. James and Peter were both in detention for a few hours.
Lupin had kissed a girl or two at that point and had enjoyed it very much. Soft lips, soft touch, smooth skin….Lupin also figured that Sirius had kissed a boy…well, he wondered…He’d seen Sirius flirt with other boys before…even sneak off with them.
So that night, he finally got up the courage to ask.
They were each on their own beds. Remus sat cross legged, doing a little late-night reading and Sirius laid on his back so that his head hung upside down off the edge of his bed. He was lazily thumbing through a Quidditch magazine.
Remus watched him for a minute, grateful that Sirius’s face was covered, so he wouldn’t notice him staring. Sirius was long and lean and beautiful. The way he was stretching to hold the magazine in front of his face made his arm muscles ripple ever so slightly. Lupin let out a loud, involuntary exhale.
Sirius didn’t miss it. He put the magazine down and looked at Remus.
They both seemed to freeze for a moment.
Then, Sirius rolled over on his belly and put his fists under his chin. “What’s up?” he asked, with one eyebrow raised.
Lupin swallowed hard and rubbed the back of his neck, nervously. “Umm...nothing, really...I guess I was just wondering...what it’s like...um...to kiss...a boy...”
Sirius’s eyes widened. “Well…somebody’s been paying close attention, damn…” Sirius crunched hard on a candy between his teeth.
Remus felt his skin heat up. He had been paying close attention. He couldn’t stop watching Sirius, no matter how hard he tried. Now he felt a little embarrassed…maybe Sirius didn’t like being watched
“Well…ya know…I guess I’m just…curious…” Lupin stuttered out. “…and yeah, I’ve seen you sneaking around with that Hufflepuff boy a time or two.”
Sirius cracked a wide smile, which Lupin was grateful for.
“Well…I haven’t exactly been subtle, I guess…” Sirius said with a sigh. “It's not like I could disappoint my parents any more than I already have...so...I just live my life however I want.”
Lupin’s heartbeat ticked up. He admired the way that Sirius was always unapologetically himself… no matter what. He was brave…he had confidence…and that made him so attractive. “It doesn’t bother me,” Lupin said quickly. “I was just curious...”
“So you said…” Sirius teased. “Well, kissing boys is…just really fun…and exciting…” Sirius’s smile got wider as he went on, “…and hot.”
“Oh…kinda like kissing girls, I guess…” Lupin reasoned.
Sirius shrugged. “I guess…”
They looked at each other for a minute.
Then, Lupin's nerves got the best of him. “Right,” he said before picking his book back up and covering his face with it.
He felt Sirius stare at him for a moment, then heard him roll back over to read his magazine and crunch on his candy.
But the seed had been planted and the tension grew.
The very next time they were alone, they tried it. Kissing, that is.
They were serving detention together in the forbidden forest. Out of sight and out of mind in the dark, foggy woods. Sirius suddenly grabbed Remus and pulled him close. Their lips were nearly touching. “Still wanna know what it’s like to kiss a boy, Moony?” Sirius whispered, his breath breaking on Lupin’s chin.
Lupin didn’t panic. Didn’t hesitate. He went with it. Leaned in. Their mouths crashed together in a sloppy kiss. It was perfect.
It was a lot like kissing a girl, Remus decided…rougher, maybe...more deliberate. At least it was that way with Sirius…Rough and sweet and needy all at once. He tasted like candy…the blue kind. Lupin was hooked.
So, they just kept doing that, whenever they got the chance to be alone. Kissing and touching and holding and hugging. Comforting. Exploring. Learning...about each other and themselves. Growing closer with each passing interaction, each passing moment, and each passing year.
