Work Text:

The late August sun beats down on Seamon Park, baking the grass and casting long, sharp shadows across the green expanses of Saugerties. John Henson stands in the center of a paved walkway, squaring his shoulders as he looks directly into the lens of the smartphone camera held steady by his husband. He adjusts his posture, flashes his trademark, slightly mischievous grin, and projects his voice over the distant sounds of cicadas and children playing.

"It takes big balls to do the ALS ice bucket challenge," Henson says, his tone perfectly balancing the theatricality of a seasoned host with genuine enthusiasm. He pauses for a beat, eyes twinkling. "Luckily, I have four of them. I was nominated by my co-host, Jill Wagner. I gladly accept your challenge, and I will make a donation."

John Anderson shifts his weight behind the camera, a quiet smile playing on his lips as he keeps the frame locked on his husband. Henson breaks character for a moment, breaking into a softer, more familiar smile as he digs into his pocket.

"Hold on, let me actually do this part right now," he murmurs, pulling out his iPhone. His thumbs fly across the screen, navigating to the donation page with practiced ease. Once the confirmation screen flashes bright and clear, he tilts the phone toward Anderson's camera lens, ensuring the proof is captured on video for the world to see. "There we go. Done and done."

With a casual flick of his wrist, Henson lightly tosses the phone onto the plush, overflowing baby bag sitting on a park bench a few feet away. It lands with a soft thud against a stray burp cloth.

Turning back to face the lens, Henson clears his throat, slipping right back into his energetic showman persona. "Before I take the challenge, I would like to nominate *Wipeout* creator Matt Kunitz, executive producer Scott Larsen, and ABC executive Joey Graziadei. You guys got 24 hours. Get involved."

The bravado lasts right up until Henson leans down to grip the handles of the massive, bright blue plastic bucket resting on the pavement. The home-flipped ice cubes clink loudly against each other, floating in a deep pool of frigid water. Henson grips the handles, his knuckles turning white, and lifts. His biceps strain under his faded red v-neck shirt, his black cargo shorts shifting as he tries to find his leverage. The bucket barely clears the ground by a few inches before his posture hitches. It is deceptively heavy, and his back lets him know it immediately.

Amused by the silent struggle, Anderson slowly pans the camera away from his straining husband to capture the scenery. A few yards away, the vibrant primary colors of the Seamon Park playground come into view. Five-year-old Katie is currently leading the charge, her bright laughter carrying through the warm air as her three-year-old twin brothers, Colin and Jackson, scramble up the plastic steps behind her in a chaotic game of follow-the-leader. They are completely oblivious to their parents' internet antics. Anderson pans the camera a little closer, tilting it down toward the shaded patch beneath a nearby maple tree. There, safely tucked into her car seat carrier, two-month-old Carly kicks her tiny feet in the air, her wide eyes tracking the rustling leaves above, completely content in her own little world.

Bringing the camera back around to lock onto Henson, Anderson catches the exact moment his husband's face contorts into a grimace of pure defeat. Henson is still hovering over the blue bucket, arms locked, realizing the physics of dumping this over his own head are entirely against him.

Anderson lets out a quiet, rumbling laugh from behind the lens. "Need help?"

Henson stops pulling, letting out a sharp breath as he looks up, totally breaking the tough-guy act. "I... yeah," he admits, his voice dropping into a sheepish, grateful tone. "This thing weighs a ton, Johnny."

"Hold on." Anderson steps closer, carefully propping the phone up against a sturdy wooden fence post.

He adjusts the angle for a second, ensuring the frame still captures the scene perfectly, before stepping out into the sunlight. In his plain white tank top and blue cargo shorts, Anderson looks every bit the grounded, solid counterweight to Henson’s high-energy presence. He struts over with a playful smirk, crossing his arms for a split second just to lightly mock his husband. After all, Henson had been the one to enthusiastically egg Jill Wagner on in the first place, completely bringing this frosty fate upon himself.

"Ready?" Anderson asks, stepping up to the bucket and gripping the heavy plastic rim with effortless familiarity.

Henson takes a deep, bracing breath, staring down at the floating ice. The bravado is entirely gone now, replaced by the universal dread of impending freezing water. "This is gonna suck," he mutters.

"Count of three," Anderson warns, though the glint in his eye suggests otherwise.

Henson quickly fixes his gaze back on the propped-up phone camera. True to form, the second he looks at the lens, his professional instincts kick back in. He flashes a brilliant, wide, movie-star grin, bracing his shoulders for the impact. Anderson doesn't bother waiting for three. With a smooth, powerful heave, he lifts the blue bucket high and tips it forward. A torrential cascade of ice-cold water and solid cubes drapes perfectly over Henson’s head and shoulders. Anderson executes the dump with surgical precision, tilting the bucket at just the right angle to maximize the soaking while stepping back perfectly.

He manages to escape with barely a single drop of splashback hitting his own white tank top. The transformation on Henson’s face is instantaneous and utterly priceless. The grin vanishes, replaced by a wide-mouthed, gasping shock as the freezing water drenches his hair, slaps his chest, and soaks through his red v-neck. He sputters, shaking his head wildly like a golden retriever, his arms flailing slightly as the ice cubes bounce off his shoulders and clatter onto the hot pavement.

"I'm freezing!" Henson yelps, his voice jumping an octave as he does a frantic, shivering little jog in place to keep his blood pumping.

Water streams down his face and drips heavily from his chin. Anderson lets out a full, boisterous laugh, stepping back into the frame to look at his shivering husband. He reaches out, wrapping a warm, solid hand around the nape of Henson's damp neck, squeezing gently. His eyes soften, full of deep affection and a hint of playful mischief.

"Bask in the sun," Anderson says softly, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur meant just for the two of them, completely ignoring the rolling camera. "And I'll help you warm up after the kids go to bed."

Henson stops his frantic jogging for a fraction of a second, a sudden, warm spark cutting through the literal chills. A genuine, breathless smile tugs at the corner of his wet face, even as another shiver wracks his frame.

"Brr..." Henson mutters, teeth chattering playfully as he looks from Anderson back to the camera, wrapping his arms around his chest to exaggerate the cold for the final seconds of the video.

Anderson laughs—catching himself before the sound turns into a full giggle fit—and steps over to the fence post, picking up the phone and pressing the stop button, cutting the recording to end the perfect summer memory.
