The mid-afternoon Malibu sun beats down with a blinding, heavy heat, turning the Pacific Ocean into a sheet of shattered glass just beyond the cliffs. Miley’s estate is entirely engulfed in chaos, a high-decibel, sensory-overload celebration that is already plastered across Instagram stories and Snapchat feeds worldwide. The bass from a hidden sound system vibrates through the floorboards, shaking the oversized glass doors of the mansion.
Noah weaves through the crowded living room, trying to avoid the stray beach balls and stray camera flashes. She finds her older sister holding court near the kitchen island, looking like a walking pop-art collage. Miley is wearing a vintage, sequined American flag bikini top paired with blindingly sparkly hot pants that catch the light with every sharp movement. Her face is a masterpiece of festival excess, complete with tiny, shimmering pearls glued painstakingly over her eyebrows. She is laughing, loud and unrestrained, her signature raspy voice cutting cleanly through the ambient noise of the party.
Noah’s gaze drifts past her sister, mapping out the surreal landscape of the gathering. The house is a revolving door of family and elite counter-culture royalty. Over by the floor-to-ceiling windows, their mother, Tish, is sharing a laugh with Brandi, both of them holding iced drinks and looking effortlessly put-together amidst the madness. A few feet away, the atmosphere shifts into pure industry luxury. Mega-producer Mike Will Made-It stands in deep conversation with The Flaming Lips’ frontman Wayne Coyne, whose wild gray hair contrasts sharply with the sleek, high-fashion silhouette of Moschino designer Jeremy Scott. Jeremy is gesturing animatedly with a brightly colored cocktail, laughing at something Wayne just said.
It is a dizzying collision of high fashion, hip-hop, and psychedelic rock, all unified under Miley's chaotic, hospitable roof.
Miley suddenly spots Noah navigating the fringe of the crowd. Her eyes light up beneath the pearl-encrusted brows, and she struts over, her platform sandals clicking against the polished floor.
"You wanna get a tattoo with me and Stella?" Miley asks, her energy completely boundless, leaning in close so Noah can hear her over the blaring music.
She points a manicured finger toward the hallway leading to the guest bedrooms, totally casual about the impromptu parlor she has set up in the middle of a national holiday. Noah blinks, turning her head to glance down the corridor and into the open doorway of the designated bedroom. Inside, the space has been transformed. A professional-looking tattoo artist, covered in intricate ink and wearing black latex gloves, is meticulously setting up a sterile station, organizing needles and small caps of black ink across from the bed. Lounging directly on the mattress is Miley’s stunning girlfriend, Victoria’s Secret angel Stella Maxwell. Stella is the picture of effortless, high-fashion rebellion, draped across the rumpled sheets in delicate, sheer designer lingerie, completely unfazed by the artist prepping equipment just a few feet away. She catches Noah’s eye through the doorway and offers a lazy, cool wave.
Noah turns back to Miley, offering a small, appreciative but definitive smile. The idea of getting permanent ink on a whim while a massive party rages outside feels a bit too intense for her current mood. All she wants is a little bit of quiet, or at least a different kind of distraction.
"No, thanks. You have fun," Noah says, raising her voice slightly to match the room's volume.
Miley lets out a dramatic pout, though her eyes are bright with affection. "Party pooper," she jokes, bumping her hip against Noah's in a playful nudge. Then, a knowing smirk spreads across her face, and she leans in a little closer, gesturing toward the massive glass doors leading out to the patio. "Go have fun with your girlfriend. I saw her by the pool."
"Thanks, Miles," Noah says, feeling a sudden, warm rush of anticipation.
She leaves the crowded kitchen behind and steps out into the overwhelming brightness of the over-the-top backyard. The outdoor space is an absolute wonderland of luxury. The infinity pool stretches out toward the horizon, seemingly dropping straight into the ocean below. Giant, whimsical pool floats shaped like swans, unicorns, and slices of pizza drift across the sparkling blue water, carrying various semi-famous guests. Yet, despite the crowd of models, musicians, and influencers, Noah doesn't have to search long.
She spots Melanie instantly. Melanie is a vision of soft, alternative surrealism amidst the neon Hollywood crowd, drifting serenely on a massive, oversized pool float near the deep end. Her dual-toned hair is tied up in loose, damp tufts, and she looks completely content, entirely tuned into her own peaceful frequency.
Noah feels a quiet thrill in her chest. She reaches down to the hem of her black swan dress—a dramatic, heavy contrast to the California sun—and slips it off in one smooth motion. Beneath it, she is wearing a bikini carefully coordinated in shades of deep magenta, pink, and white, the distinct and vibrant palette of the lipstick lesbian flag. Stepping up to the edge of the coping, she slips quietly into the cool, refreshing water of the pool, her movements deliberate and careful. She ducks her head beneath the surface, swimming sneakily and silently across the length of the pool, keeping her silhouette hidden beneath the ripples.
Noah breaks the surface right at the edge of the giant float, bringing her hands down on the vinyl with a sudden, playful splash. Melanie lets out a short, high-pitched yelp of surprise. The sudden movement rocks the float violently, and Melanie loses her balance, her eyes widening as she begins to roll helplessly off the slick plastic edge toward the water. Before Melanie can slide all the way in, Noah moves with quick reflexes. She lunges forward, catching Melanie firmly by the forearm, anchoring herself against the side of the pool. With a gentle but strong tug, Noah pulls her back toward the center of the raft, stabilizing the float and keeping Melanie safely aloft.
Melanie gasps, her chest heaving slightly from the sudden burst of adrenaline, before her expression melts into an affectionate, mock-annoyed pout. "Noah!" she protests, swatting playfully at Noah’s wet shoulder.
Noah only lets out a bright, bubbly giggle, entirely unbothered by the reprimand. She cups her hand against the surface of the water and playfully flicks a spray of cool droplets right at Melanie’s shins. Melanie winces away from the cold splash, laughing now, the last of her mock anger completely evaporating. She looks down at Noah, her gaze softening into something deeply tender and grounded, entirely shutting out the noise of the star-studded party around them. Crawling carefully to the very edge of the vinyl raft, Melanie leans over the water. She goes only so far—just enough to bridge the gap between the floating raft and the cool water—and presses her lips to Noah’s in a sweet, lingering kiss that tastes like summer sun and saltwater.
