Work Text:

Mogari could’ve fallen asleep then and there if it weren’t for a sharp poke on the cheek from Eugene.

“Wuh?...” She mumbled, rubbing her eyes in dramatic fashion as if trying to make a point of how much this lecture was boring her. The ginger haired girl, who is also her girlfriend, whacked her playfully, “If you don’t wake up, your scores are going to stay like that forever.”

Scores… right.

Mogari had gotten an… interesting score on the latest exams. Eugene saw them on the results board – she was completely baffled, and instantly burst out laughing. After calming down, however, she ended up giving Mogari an earful on how she should take her studies more seriously. Mogari simply rolled her eyes with a grin, telling the other girl she was too uptight; to loosen up a little, be a little softer on her girlfriend.

A small smile cracked on Eugene’s face, but she quickly replaced it with a far too serious expression for the situation and declared that she would be taking the black haired girl back to her house for a much-needed study session.

Because of that silly interaction in the middle of the school hallway, the girls were now sitting on the floor of Eugene’s bedroom studying together. Well, more like the ginger haired girl was teaching, and Mogari was just barely staying awake listening to it. It was far from a balanced study session.

“If you’re really that bored, you can take a small break. I’ll get you a snack or two, okay?” Mogari grinned and nodded – her girlfriend was always considerate to her like this. She wasn’t loud about it, but it was the quiet, small things that mattered. A few minutes later, her girlfriend came back with her favourite snack. She thanked Eugene with her mouth already full, munching on her snack.

Mogari was waking up a little bit more now. She could see her girlfriend working diligently at her textbook – she looked elegant and… oh. Somehow, even though they were already a couple hours into their ‘study’ session, she only just now realised how pretty her girlfriend looked today. It resulted in her staring for much longer than she should’ve.  Her hair was flowing down to her waist in soft waves, and she must’ve been wearing a new perfume – she smelt like strawberries. Even worse, her lips looked way too kissable. She couldn’t stop staring.

The ginger haired girl kept glancing up, noticing her lingering gaze. After the third time of Eugene glancing up and her girlfriend still looking at her, Eugene closed her textbook with a slow blush growing on her face.

Instead of backing down and being shy like she usually was, Eugene moved forward towards the black haired girl, “Why did you stop studying…” Mogari grew quiet – her girlfriend was now only a few inches away from her face. Then, she did something rather confusing – she wiped at her mouth.

“You have a crumb on your mouth,” To Mogari, that reasoning made perfect sense, and her face lit up in a cheeky grin, “Thanks.” For some reason unbeknownst to the black haired girl, her girlfriend's face twisted into a frown.

“You know,” Eugene started, reaching up to cup the other girl’s face, “You’re not nearly as dense as I originally thought you were, when we first met,” Eugene edged closer, closer… “But you still have a lot of things to work on.” Even though Mogari’s face was now beet red – all the way to her ears, the ginger haired girl moved away just as quickly as she came.

Uh. What was that?

Mogari’s thoughts went crazy. Was Eugene going to kiss her? No way. Why would she do that? The overly analytical prodigy, trying to take the initiative to kiss her? But then… Why would she get so close? Why would she call her dense – dense? Mogari went red for a different reason, “I’m not dense at all,” She responded, trying to play it off in her usual playful tone, but Eugene had already gone back to studying in her textbook.

“If you’re not dense at all,” Eugene gestured sarcastic talking marks in the air, “Then kiss me.”

“Ki-... What?”

Eugene jumped forward, only inches away from Mogari’s face, resulting in a yelp but then a quick cover up laugh from the girl, “...Is that supposed to be a joke?”

“Why are you acting surprised? You’ve been staring at me this whole time.”

Mogari scoffed, mainly because the other girl was completely right; her girlfriend just looked way too pretty today. Even though Eugene usually backed down and pretended not to notice when she was being stared at for a long time, both of them knew deep down that Eugene noticed.

And today she vocalised it.

Mogari bit her lip in embarrassment, looked away, glanced back, then tried leaning forward in desperation – but Eugene pushed her away by her shoulders. Her face shifted through various expressions, surprise, confusion, and finally, hurt, “Why did you…” But before she could finish her sentence, “If you want to kiss me so bad, you’ll have to work for it,” The ginger hair girl remarked, trying to sound tough even though she was blushing just as much.

Now Mogari was even more confused. Work for it? Why should her own girlfriend have to work for kisses?

“...What do you mean?” Eugene smiled and sat back, “If you make a genuine effort to improve your studies,” The black haired girl winced – she knew where this was going, “I’ll give you all the kisses in the world, whenever you want.” To make it even worse, just a moment later, she crept forward again, cupping her face with one hand and caressing her thumb over her left cheek, “And you’d love that, wouldn’t you?” Her tone was dripping with sarcasm; it only made the other girl’s face burn even more, and her jaw dropped open.

Mogari stuttered her way through an attempt at a reply, completely failing. She took a deep breath in, tried again, failed. Eventually, she just nodded quietly. Her tough act from earlier was completely gone, melted in a pool in Eugene’s hands. And there was nothing cuter than when her girlfriend was at her mercy.

“...Okay, fine. Deal.” The black haired girl mumbled shyly, and Eugene’s smile only grew wider. “Good.”

Maybe studies were worth taking seriously after all.
