Work Text:
There was sweetness and salt dancing in the air all around him.
He could taste it in the wind and hear it in his ears, twisting together into perfect harmony. The sunset warmed the skin of his cheeks into a soft flush and casted a gentle glow over his golden head.
Even through shut eyes he could perfectly picture the way the water lapped rhythmically against the sand, back and forward, over and over, the flock of seagulls above him soaring in endless circles.
He could feel soft touches in his hair, gentle fingers weaving through each strand, twisting them into place, away from his face allowing him to better feel the breath of sea.
It was all so beautiful, this vision behind his eyes.
His heartbeat thrummed to the beat of a song, a melody so precious he could feel it ripening his soul, taste its sweetness lingering in his lips.
A voice calls out to him at a distance, saying his name and other sweet words he cannot seem to decipher, though he recognizes the sound enough to know they’re important.
A young girl's voice, soft and pretty, he slowly remembers everything that she means to him. Her face and name remain a mystery but like a breath of fresh air, he feels her words bring life into his body and as every weary bone inside it eases at her tone, he prays it’ll come back to him later.
“When all this is over, I’d like to tell you something.” She whispers, words meant for him and him alone.
Silence.
It's not something he wants to think about. Nothing about endings, he just wants to bask in the peace that she brings him forever.
“Link?”
The wind rushes past his ears. Everything else falls into silence with him. He forgets how to speak, but she doesn’t even seem to mind.
“I’m sorry.”
Hands slip away from his hair, every braided strand remaining in place like a bitter reminder, it leaves his head feeling heavy.
A gentle weight falls into his lap and comes at a rest against his cupped hands. His fingers tremble along the edges of soft petals, he closes his eyes and breathes in its hibiscus scent and almost suffocates from the desire it brings him.
His eyes open to the image of an endless sea of stars. He’s awake once more, or so he hopes, he doesn’t always know for sure anymore.
All too quickly he begins to forget what it felt like to be handled so tenderly, but not enough to keep him from mourning.
An ache settles in his chest and it’s all he has left of her. That and her song, forever enveloping his soul and filling him with longing.
His last hope for peace died with her, he's convinced, but he carries on like she asked him to because his mind is the only place she remains alive and he can’t bear the thought of killing her again.
