Chapter Text
With a gasp, I shoot out of my not-very-restful sleep. I blink my sleep-crusted eyes and squint, wondering where the blue glow is coming from. With a yawn, I rub my eye with my fist—only to freeze when I look in front of me.
There’s a blue, glowing screen about two feet tall and two feet wide, hovering midair in front of me.
I rub my eyes harder, hoping the hallucination will go away. I sigh when my hand drops and the screen is still there.
I think back to last night, trying to see if there’s any chance I could have been drugged—but we didn’t even have a case. No late-night bar, no unknown substances, nothing.
I decide to look at the screen, even though I’m assuming this is some kind of drug-induced hallucination. I push my hand through it—it phases straight through. I blink, then check my pulse before deciding this might be a little more real than I’d like.
I freeze again when I read it—
Hello, user
Scanning…
Scanning complete
Hello, Spencer Reid of the Behavioral Analysis Unit.
Please input all data you are comfortable sharing, or select full scan to have all information installed instantly.
(For help, please say or think “Help,” and assistance will be provided.)
I blink a couple of times, trying to process what’s going on. After reading the words, I hesitate—but figure, what’s the harm?
“Help.”
The word comes out uncertain, but as soon as I say it, a second screen appears in front of the first, overlapping it. This one is red and divided into three categories:
Help Menu
Basics
Advanced
Mastery
The last two are grayed out. When I touch them, I’m not even slightly surprised when nothing happens.
I shrug and tap “Basics.”
The help menu disappears, replaced by a new blue screen that still covers the original. This one has several categories:
Basics Help Menu

I sigh and select the only option available. That screen disappears too, and I get the sense it’s clearing my view for me.
A new screen appears, finally explaining what the scan does in full detail.
Scan Info:
A full scan will analyze you from head to toe and download all information about you—even the things you yourself don’t know…
More info
I hesitate for only a second before releasing a long breath. It probably won’t kill me—and my curiosity is getting the better of me.
I glance around until I spot an X in the top-right corner. When I press it, the screen closes, leaving only the original.
I hesitate one last time before closing my eyes and sighing.
“Full scan.”
A red light emits from the screen immediately. Just like the help menu said, it scans me from head to toe.

The red screen disappears.
I take a second to read everything before flopping back into bed and closing my eyes.
When I open them again, the screen is still there.
I blink.
It moves with my head.
I sit up—the screen follows.
I stare at the four options, then think of something else.
“Are you sentient?”
Yes, user.
I learn as you learn. I have all the information you currently possess, and I will continue to grow as you do.
