Work Text:

The June heat heavy over The Wharf is sticky and thick, humming with the distant, vibrating basslines of soundchecks bleeding from the main stages of Something in the Water. Calvin Harris shifts his weight from one foot to the other, squinting through his designer sunglasses at the bustling Washington D.C. waterfront. He holds a massive, insulated water bottle in one hand and uses the other to gently guide five-year-old Louis back toward the group before the boy can wander into a restricted production lane.

Beside him, fourteen-year-old Rocket stands with his hands shoved deep into his pockets, seamlessly playing the role of the cool, observant teenager. He stays glued to Calvin’s side, occasionally nodding along to whatever track is pulsing from the speakers in the distance while helping keep a passive eye on Harmony and Vuitton, who are currently fascinated by a discarded VIP wristband on the gravel. Calvin feels a bit like an air traffic controller trying to land multiple planes at once, his towering height making him stick out like a beacon in the crowd, but having Rocket right there next to him makes the chaos entirely manageable. It’s been two years of navigating this beautiful, emotionally grounded blended life with Pharrell, but large-scale festivals always add a layer of hyper-focused energy to the mix.

"Excuse me, Calvin? Hi, hello!" An energetic voice breaks through the ambient noise of walkie-talkies and golf carts.

Calvin turns to see a woman approaching with a bright, welcoming smile. It takes his brain a brief second to shift contexts before recognition clicks—it's Mrs. Sable, the pastor's wife from the church community Pharrell remains closely tied to down in Virginia Beach. She’s wearing a laminated staff pass and a custom festival tee, her warmth instantly cutting through the corporate backstage atmosphere.

"Oh, hello! It is so good to see you," Calvin says, offering a polite, genuine smile and extending a hand, which she promptly bypasses to give him a brief, maternal hug.

"Good to see you too! Look how big everyone is getting," she beams, instantly dropping down to her knees to be at eye level with the triplets. Harmony, Louis, and Vuitton immediately perk up, sensing someone who treats them like the center of the universe. "Now, listen, you three. I’ve been looking everywhere for you. We have the youth STEM panel activity starting in just a few minutes in the air-conditioned pavilion. We’re building miniature solar-powered boats today. Do you think you can help me test them out?"

The word boats acts like a magic spell. Louis capsizes his imaginary steering wheel, Vuitton drops the wristband, and Harmony takes a literal leap of joy. Calvin looks down at the five-year-olds, then over at Rocket, who gives a subtle, knowing eye-roll that says glad it's them and not me.

"That sounds like a perfect plan," Calvin says, nodding to Mrs. Sable with immense gratitude. "Thank you so much for rounding them up. We really appreciate it."

Mrs. Sable takes Harmony and Vuitton by the hands, corralling the little trio with practiced, grandmotherly ease. The triplets immediately begin skipping off toward the white tents of the technology pavilion, their chatter fading into the festival noise as Rocket and Calvin stay behind, watching them go from the safety of the backstage lane. Calvin sighs, stretching his shoulders and enjoying the temporary peace. He watches the little kids disappear into the pavilion, a soft, content smile forming on his face as he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Rocket.

SPLAT. A sudden, freezing shock of water explodes directly between Calvin’s shoulder blades. The cold water instantly saturates his lightweight linen shirt, sticking the fabric to his skin and making him gasp loudly.

"Bloody hell!" Calvin yelps, his Scottish accent cracking slightly as he shivers and whips around, hands up in a defensive posture.

Standing ten feet away, looking effortlessly radiant in a bucket hat, oversized shorts, and a beaming, dimpled grin, is Pharrell. He is practically vibrating with mischievous energy, a neon-colored plastic bucket sitting at his feet. In his hands, he isn't holding microphone equipment or setlists; he is clutching three neon water guns like a tactical action hero.

"You look like you need to cool down, babe," Pharrell says, his voice a smooth, melodic contrast to his chaotic actions. He doesn't just smile; his whole face lights up, completely unbothered by the high-stakes festival pressures happening just over the barricade.

Rocket breaks character immediately, his cool teenage exterior completely melting into a massive, delighted grin. "Dad, you totally hit him!"

"Target locked, son," Pharrell says smoothly, tossing a massive, pump-action water blaster directly into Rocket’s waiting hands. He steps forward, closing the distance between himself and Calvin, and holds out a sleek, neon-green water pistol toward his boyfriend. "Here. Defend your honor, Calvin."

Calvin looks at the plastic weapon, then up at Pharrell’s eyes, which are crinkled at the corners with pure affection. The lingering chill on Calvin's back melts away instantly. He takes the water gun, shaking his head in fond disbelief. "You are completely ridiculous, you know that?"

"Maybe," Pharrell murmurs, stepping right into Calvin’s space.

He reaches up, wrapping a hand around the back of Calvin’s neck to pull him down into a soft, lingering kiss. It’s a quiet, grounded anchor in the middle of the summer madness, a silent acknowledgment of the two years they've built together. But the romance is short-lived.

PSTTTT! A sharp stream of water catches Pharrell right in the side of the neck.

Rocket stands a few paces away, his pump-action blaster fully primed, a look of ultimate triumph on his face. "No distractions on the battlefield!" Rocket shouts, already backing away to find cover behind a stack of equipment cases.

"Oh, it is absolute war now," Calvin declares, his competitive streak instantly flaring up. He pumps the handle of his green blaster, aiming straight for Rocket's sneakers.

Pharrell lets out a bright, infectious laugh, spinning around to flank his son. "Regroup, Cal! Take the left side!"

Under the blazing June sun, completely ignoring the thousands of fans gathering on the other side of the fence, the three of them sprint across the gravel, ducking behind production crates and trading streams of water, their laughter ringing out louder than the bass.
