The mission had gone off without a hitch.
Tails wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead as he and Tangle made their way through the forest path that would lead them back to Restoration HQ. The sun was beginning its descent toward the horizon, painting the sky in warm oranges and pinks. It had been a good day, a great day actually. When Tangle had first approached him about partnering up for this mission, he'd been a bit nervous. Sure, they'd always gotten along well enough at headquarters; easy conversation and the occasional joke, but working together in the field? That was different.
Turns out, he had nothing to worry about.
"Did you see that Badnik's reaction when I wrapped my tail around its legs?" Tangle laughed, her voice bright and energetic as she walked alongside him. "It looked so confused!" She started mocking how the badnik acted. "Like, 'Wait, what's happening? Why am I falling?'"
Tails chuckled, his twin tails swishing behind him. "Yeah, that was pretty great. Though I have to say, the look on your face when I hacked into their communications system and made them all start playing that ridiculous Eggman jingle was priceless."
"Oh my gosh, I almost forgot about that!" Tangle clutched her stomach, laughing harder. "What even was that song?"
"I have no idea! I just found it in their audio files and thought it would be funny." Tails grinned, feeling more relaxed than he had in a while. There was something about Tangle's energy that reminded him of Sonic. That same infectious enthusiasm, that fearlessness in the face of danger. But where Sonic could sometimes be a bit too impulsive, Tangle had this way of balancing her wild antics with genuine tactical thinking. They'd worked together seamlessly, anticipating each other's moves, covering each other's backs.
It felt... natural.
"You know," Tangle said, her tail swaying behind her as they walked, "I was a little worried about this mission at first. Whisper's usually my partner, obviously, and we've got our whole dynamic down, ya know? With her off doing some reconnaissance, I was just the tiniest bit nervous when Jewel sent this mission my way. But ya know what..." She glanced over at him with a warm smile. "You're pretty awesome, Tails. We make a good team."
Tails felt his cheeks warm slightly at the compliment. "Thanks. You're pretty awesome yourself. I mean, the things you can do with your tail? That's incredible! I've never seen anything like it."
"Oh please," Tangle waved a hand dismissively, though her smile widened. "You've got two tails. That's like, twice as cool. Plus you can fly! Do you know how jealous I am of that?"
"Well, your tail can stretch and grab things from like twenty feet away. That's way more versatile than just spinning around. I can think of so many scenarios that would've helped me in a pinch."
"Are you kidding? Flying is the dream, Tails. I'd trade my stretchy tail for flight in a heartbeat."
"Really? I disagree. The number of times I've wished I could reach something without having to walk over to it..."
Tangle laughed again, and Tails found himself smiling wider. This was nice. Easy. The conversation flowed naturally between them, jumping from topic to topic without any awkward pauses or forced small talk. They discussed their favorite missions, swapped stories about Sonic and the others, debated the merits of different types of chili dogs (Tails was firmly in the "classic is best" camp, while Tangle advocated for experimental spicy toppings).
As they walked, the conversation gradually shifted, becoming more playful, more teasing.
"So," Tangle said, a mischievous glint in her eye, "I noticed you blushing earlier when I complimented your tech skills. Does the genius inventor get flustered easily?"
Tails felt his ears flatten slightly. "I-what? I wasn't blushing!"
"Oh, you totally were! Your whole face went red. It was adorable."
"I was just... it was hot out! From all the running and fighting!"
"Uh-huh. Sure." Tangle's grin was absolutely wicked now. "Face it, Tails. You're a blusher. There's no shame in it."
"I am not a-" Tails paused, realizing he was getting defensive over something completely silly. He took a breath and tried a different approach, matching her playful tone. "Okay, fine. Maybe you're right, but I seem to remember someone getting pretty flustered when I said her acrobatic moves were impressive."
"That's different!"
"How is that different?"
"Because I was just... surprised! I didn't expect you to notice!"
"How could I not notice? You were doing back flips off of walls, Tangle. It was kind of hard to miss."
Tangle's tail flicked behind her, and Tails noticed a slight pink tinge to her cheeks. "Well... okay, maybe I was just a little flattered, that's all. But can you blame me? It's nice to hear that kind of thing from someone as smart as you."
"Someone as smart as me?" Tails repeated, confused by her choice of words. "What does my intelligence have to do with anything?"
"I don't know! It just... it means more coming from you, I guess. Usually you're all analytical and stuff, so when you give a compliment, it feels more... genuine? Like you really mean it."
Tails felt something warm bloom in his chest at her words. "But I do mean it. You are really talented, Tangle. And not just with the acrobatics. You're a great strategist, too. The way you adapted to that situation with the collapsing bridge before? That was quick thinking!"
"See? There you go again, making me all flustered." Tangle bumped her shoulder against his playfully. "You're dangerous, you know that?"
"Dangerous?" Tails laughed. "I'm probably the least dangerous person you know."
"Oh, I don't know about that. You're dangerous in your own way." Tangle's voice had taken on a slightly different quality; still playful, but with an undertone that Tails couldn't quite identify. "Smart, talented, sweet... and those big blue eyes? Total heart-throb material."
Tails nearly tripped over his own feet. "I... what?"
Tangle seemed to realize what she'd just said, her eyes widening slightly. "I mean... you know, hypothetically! Like, if someone were into that sort of thing! Which, you know, people probably are! Because you're a catch! Not that I'm... I mean-"
"Right, yeah, no.... I get it," Tails said quickly, his heart beating a little faster than it had been a moment ago. He tried to steer the conversation away from himself. "Enough about me. I bet you have to beat people off with a stick, huh? With your whole... well, everything."
"My whole everything?" Tangle shook off her embarrassment and raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing at her lips. "Smooth, Tails. Real smooth."
"That came out wrong! I just meant... you're fun and energetic and, you know, pretty, and I-uh-" Tails stopped himself, realizing he was starting to speak without thinking.
"You think I'm pretty?" Tangle's voice was softer now, and when Tails glanced over at her, he saw that her expression had shifted into something he couldn't quite read.
"I... well, I mean, objectively speaking, you're-" Tails cleared his throat. "Is it getting warm out here?"
"It's almost sunset, Tails. It's cooling down."
"Right. Yeah. Of course."
They walked in silence for a moment, and Tails could feel the energy between them shifting into something different, something charged. He wasn't entirely sure how they'd gotten here, but the playful banter had definitely crossed some kind of line into... what? Flirting? Were they flirting?
Tails had never really flirted with anyone before. He'd been so focused on his inventions and helping Sonic and the others that romance had always seemed like something that happened to other people. He'd never really thought about it much, never really felt that pull toward anyone in particular.
But now, walking beside Tangle, feeling the warmth of her presence, hearing the way her voice had softened when he blurted out that she was pretty. It felt... endearing.
"So," Tangle said, breaking the silence, her voice back to its usual playful tone, "You wanna know what the best part about having a tail like mine is?"
"What's that?" Tails felt a small relief in her question, maybe their conversation could get less awkward.
"I can scratch my own back without having to ask anyone for help." She paused, then added with a mischievous grin, "Though I guess that means I miss out on the whole 'You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' thing."
"I mean, I... could scratch your back if you needed?" Tails offered, voice sounding a bit awkward, then immediately realized he was guiding the conversation back into flirting territory.
"Oh yeah?" Tangle's grin widened, leaning into the teasing tone. "And what would you want in return?"
"I... I don't know, I was just-"
"Because I gotta say, Tails, if you're offering back scratches, I might have to take you up on that. I know I said I can do it myself, but I've got this spot right between my shoulder blades that I can never quite reach, even with my tail."
"I could... I could help with that. If you wanted." Tails felt his face heating up again, his mind yelling at him to stop speaking without thinking.
"Careful, Tails. Keep making offers like that and I might think you're trying to get your hands on me." Tangle's tone was teasing, but there was something else there too, something that made Tails' pulse quicken.
"I wasn't! I didn't mean-"
"Relax, I'm just messing with you." Tangle laughed, but it sounded a little forced. "Though I have to say, the idea of those skilled inventor hands working out some knots? That's pretty tempting."
Tails opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, Tangle continued.
"Of course, I'd have to return the favor. And let me tell you, I give great massages. I'm very good with my hands. And my tail of course. I could probably work out tension in places you didn't even know you had, foxy boy."
The comment hung in the air between them, and Tails felt his brain short-circuit slightly. Was she... did she mean...
Tangle seemed to realize what she'd just said, her eyes going wide. She spoke in a panic. "I meant like, you know, muscle tension! From fighting! Because we fight a lot! And that causes tension! In muscles! Which I could... help with... using massage techniques?"
She trailed off, her face flushing a deep red, completely aware she just kept digging the hole deeper.
Bad joke. Reeeeeally bad joke.
They both fell silent, the awkwardness descending like a heavy blanket. Tails stared straight ahead, his mind racing. What just happened? Had Tangle been flirting with him, too? That last comment... that definitely sounded like... like something more than just friendly banter. Even more than innocent flirting. It almost sounded like... an invitation.
Did Tangle like him? Like, like him like him?
And... did he like Tangle?
Tails' mind spun with questions he didn't have answers to. He'd never been in any kind of relationship before. He didn't know how any of this worked. How were you supposed to know if someone liked you? How were you supposed to know if you liked them back? Was there some kind of checklist? Some scientific method he could apply?
A more pressing question cropped up; wasn't Tangle with Whisper? Tails had always assumed they were a couple. They were always together, always working as a team, and there was definitely something between them. But was that a romantic relationship, or just a really close partnership? He'd never actually asked, never wanted to pry into their personal business.
But if they were together, then what was all this? What had that conversation been?
Tails felt panic rising in his chest. He needed to say something, anything, to break this awful silence. They were almost back to headquarters. He knew it was only minutes before it would show on the horizon and he couldn't let things end like this, all weird and awkward.
He cleared his throat, asking the question on his mind haphazardly. "Hey, Tangle... so I've just been wondering... you and Whisper, uh... are you two together?"
The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them, and immediately, Tails wanted to sink into the ground and disappear forever.
He screamed at himself internally. THAT'S what you blurted out? That's none of your business! What are you doing!?
Tangle's head whipped toward him, her eyes wide and her cheeks still flushed. "I... what?"
"I'm sorry, that was... I shouldn't have-" Tails stammered, his hands waving in front of him defensively.
Tangle seemed to be struggling with how to respond, not expecting to hear that question seemingly out of the blue. She opened her mouth, closed it, then opened it again. Finally, she settled on trying to deflect with humor, though her voice came out strained.
"Well, why do you ask? You want a piece?" She forced a laugh that didn't quite land. "Worried about a little competition, Tails? Heh... uh..."
She darted her eyes away and slapped herself in the face, her muzzle fully red with embarrassment.
Stupid stupid stupid, she thought, her tail drooping slightly behind her.
Tails kept his hands raised in defense, words tumbling out of his mouth without any coherent thought behind them. "No! I mean... I'm not... I just think you're so pretty is all but I-"
He slapped his hands over his mouth, trying to can his rambling, his eyes darting away.
Tangle's ears perked up slightly, and despite her embarrassment, Tails could see a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth, cheeks pink. There it was again. She'd heard him call her pretty. Again. And this time, it hadn't been couched in any kind of qualifier or explanation. Just a simple, honest admission, even if he didn't mean to. She savored the compliment entirely this time.
But she didn't say anything in response. She was too worried about digging the hole deeper, about making this already awkward situation even worse. So, she just kept walking, her eyes fixed firmly on the path ahead, her tail swishing nervously behind her.
They walked in silence for what felt like an eternity, even though it was only a few minutes at best, both of them carefully avoiding eye contact. Tails could feel his heart hammering in his chest, could feel the heat in his face that he knew meant he was blushing furiously. He wanted to say something, to fix this, but every time he opened his mouth, his brain refused to supply any words that wouldn't make things worse.
Finally, mercifully, the Restoration headquarters came into full view over the horizon.
"O-oh look!" Tangle said, her voice a little too loud, a little too forced. "We're almost back! Mission success, Tails... Right?"
She held up a fist, trying to break the tension with a post-mission fist bump.
Tails looked at her fist, then up at her face. Despite everything, despite the awkwardness and the confusion and the racing thoughts in his head, he found himself smiling. Because it had been a successful mission. And more than that, it had been fun. He'd enjoyed every minute of working with Tangle, even this weird, awkward walk back.
He bumped his fist against hers, his smile growing more genuine. "Yeah. Mission success."
He continued. "And you know what? We should do this again sometime." And he meant it. Whatever this weirdness was between them, he didn't want it to ruin what had otherwise been an amazing day.
Tangle's expression softened, her own smile becoming more real. "Yeah... yeah! We should."
Then, with a smirk that was pure Tangle, she stretched her tail over toward Tails. "How about we... 'shake' on it?"
Tails chuckled, turning his twin tails toward hers. "Yeah, but let's go for a tail five!"
He smacked each of his twin tails against the end of Tangle's, the gesture feeling more personal for each of the tail-focused heroes over a simple fist bump.
Tangle happily laughed, some of the tension finally draining from her shoulders. "Seems more like a high ten. A fifteen maybe?"
They both laughed at the terrible joke, the sound genuine and warm, and just like that, the worst of the awkwardness seemed to dissipate. It wasn't gone completely; there was still something hanging in the air between them, something unresolved, but at least they could laugh together again.
As they approached the entrance to the headquarters, Tangle gave him a small wave. "See you around, Tails."
"See you, Tangle."
They parted ways, heading to their respective rooms, both trying very hard not to think about the fact that their hearts were still beating just a bit faster than normal.
---
A few hours later, Tails was lying on his bed, staring up at the ceiling of his room. He'd tried to distract himself: he pulled out some blueprints, tinkered with a few gadgets, even attempted to reread a technical manual on advanced propulsion systems, but nothing could keep his mind from wandering to that walk back to headquarters.
He and Tangle had really gotten along well on the mission. Better than well, actually. They'd been perfectly in sync, like they'd been working together in the field for years instead of just one day. The banter had been fun, the teamwork had been seamless, and he'd genuinely enjoyed every moment of it.
But that's just it, right? They'd acted as partners. There was nothing more to it.
Right?
Tails rolled over onto his side, his twin tails curling around him slightly, and closed his eyes. He thought about the way Tangle had laughed at his jokes, the way her eyes had lit up when he'd complimented her acrobatics. He thought about the playful teasing, the way the conversation had gradually shifted into something that felt like more than friendly banter.
He thought about the way his heart had skipped a beat when he saw her smile after blurting out that he thought she was pretty.
And then, unbidden, an image formed in his mind: Tangle, looking at him with that warm, genuine smile. A slight blush on her muzzle. A look of intention in her eyes as she leaned in closer, her hand reaching out to pull him toward her...
Tails' heart fluttered, and his eyes snapped open.
Uh oh, he thought. He knew it now, there was no denying it. He had a crush on Tangle. The scary question on his mind: What to do about it?
Suddenly, he heard a knock at his door...
---
Not long after her return from the mission, Tangle was in the training area, trying very hard to focus on her workout routine. She'd set up an obstacle course for herself. Nothing too complicated, just some basic acrobatic maneuvers to keep her skills sharp. Normally, this kind of thing would be easy, almost meditative. She could lose herself in the rhythm of movement, the flow of one move into the next.
But today, her mind kept wandering.
"Tangle, you're being silly," she said out loud to herself as she ran up a wall and launched into a back flip, her tail extending to grab a bar and swing her around. "Tails is cute n' all, but you gotta get out of your head. We make good partners, there's nothin' more than that. Whisper wouldn't get distracted like this."
She landed the move perfectly, then immediately set up for the next one; a running jump into a corkscrew spin, using her tail to propel herself higher.
But as she launched herself into the air, an image flashed through her mind: Tails, looking at her with those big blue eyes, his hand gently reaching out to caress her cheek. That soft, innocent smile on his face as he leaned in closer...
Tangle's eyes went wide, her muzzle flushing bright red. She completely lost her sense of balance, tumbling through the air in an uncontrolled spin. At the last second, her instincts kicked in and she managed to turn the spinning fall into a roll, coming up on her feet but stumbling slightly.
"H'oh boy..." she muttered, putting a hand to her forehead.
What the heck was that? She thought. Don't tell me that... me and Tails... no way, am I crushing on a *boy*?
Suddenly, she felt a hand on her shoulder and jumped, snapping her from her thoughts. She spun around to find Whisper standing there, her mask pushed up on her head, her expression concerned.
"Whisper!" Tangle said, perhaps a bit too enthusiastically. "How was the mission?"
Whisper didn't respond to the question. Instead, she spoke quietly, her voice barely audible as always. "I saw you fall... everything okay?"
Tangle waved her off, forcing a laugh. "Ohhh it's nothing, I just mistimed a maneuver. That's why I'm practicing, right?"
Whisper tilted her head to the side, her eyes studying Tangle's face, easily seeing through her words. Then, somehow even more quietly, she spoke, "I heard what you said."
Tangle's face went pale white. "Nonono, Whisper it's... well... ugh."
She sighed, her shoulders slumping. There was no point in trying to hide it. Whisper knew her too well, could read her like a book. And besides, Tangle had never been good at keeping secrets from her.
"We... should talk about it. You know I can't keep anything from you."
She offered out her hand to Whisper, who took it gently, her fingers intertwining with Tangle's. Together, they walked back to Tangle's room, neither of them speaking until the door was closed behind them.
They sat on Tangle's bed, and for a moment, Tangle just stared at their joined hands, trying to figure out where to start.
Finally, she took a deep breath and began.
She told Whisper everything. About the mission, about how well she and Tails had worked together, about the easy banter and the way they'd seemed to anticipate each other's moves. She talked about how much fun it had been, how Tails' more subdued personality had meshed perfectly with her own energetic nature, both not afraid to crack a joke, how he actually reminded her of Whisper in some ways but was also completely his own person.
She paused, her grip on Whisper's hand tightening slightly.
"And then... on the walk back to HQ..." Tangle's voice got quieter. "Things got... weird."
She explained how the casual banter had gradually shifted, becoming more playful, more teasing. How it had started to feel less like friendly conversation and more like... flirting. She told Whisper about the back-and-forth, about the compliments and the innuendos, and then, her face burning with embarrassment, she told her about the crude "massage" joke she'd made.
"I don't even know what I was thinking," Tangle said, her free hand coming up to cover her face. "It just came out, and then everything got all awkward and weird, and I... I'm sorry, Whisper. I don't know what my dumb brain was doing. My heart has always been for you, no one else. Especially not a boy of all things. I mean, I've never even been interested in boys, so why would I-"
"Tangle."
Whisper's soft voice cut through Tangle's rambling, and she looked up to find Whisper watching her with those calm, understanding eyes.
"I'm sorry," Tangle said again. "I just-"
"Stop apologizing." Whisper held up a hand. "It's not a big deal."
"Whisper, no-"
Whisper put a finger to Tangle's lips, silencing her. Then, with a slight blush coloring her own cheeks, she said, "Maybe... you should go find out."
Tangle blinked. "Wha-...go find out what?"
"Talk to Tails about it." Whisper's blush deepened. "The fox... he's cute. I get it. Go talk to him about it. See where it goes."
"I... and you're okay with this? With me exploring whatever this is with someone else? A boy someone else?”
"Yes."
Tangle stared at her girlfriend, her mind struggling to process what she was hearing. Whisper was... okay with this? More than okay, she was actively encouraging it?
But as she looked into Whisper's eyes, she saw nothing but sincerity and understanding. And maybe, just maybe, a hint of curiosity.
"...And what if he caught the feels for me?" Tangle questioned. She saw a small smile show on Whisper's face.
"Who wouldn't?"
Tangle felt warmth growing in her chest, not expecting that answer. She took a deep breath, then let it out slowly. "You're right. Like always."
She reached up and caressed Whisper's cheek, her thumb brushing gently across her skin. Whisper leaned into the touch, her eyes closing briefly.
"Thanks..." Tangle said softly. "You're the best..."
She leaned in and pressed a quick, gentle kiss to Whisper's lips. It was familiar, comfortable, filled with the love and trust they'd built together. When she pulled back, she found Whisper still smiling at her, a rare genuine smile that made Tangle's heart warm.
Their hands were still connected, and Tangle gave Whisper's a gentle squeeze before standing up and reluctantly pulling away.
"I'll talk to him now," Tangle said, trying to sound more confident than she felt. "I'll spill all the tea when I'm back!"
She gave Whisper one more soft smile before heading toward the door.
As soon as she was out in the hallway with the door closed behind her, the panic set in.
"Sheesh! 'Just talk to him!?' Easier said than done, Whisper. Ugh!" Tangle slapped herself lightly on the face, trying to psych herself up. "Get it together, Tangle. This should be easy. Like Whisper said, just go up to his room, knock on the door, and tell him how you feel!"
She started walking toward Tails' room, her pace slow and deliberate, like she was walking toward her doom rather than a conversation. With each step, her mind raced with possibilities. What would she even say? How would she bring it up? What did any of this even mean? What if he didn't feel the same way? What if he did? Where would things go from there?
Before she knew it, she was standing outside Tails' door. She took a deep breath, steeling herself.
"Okay, Tangle. You've fought robots, badniks, and literal world-ending threats. You can handle one conversation with a cute fox."
Wait, did she just say "cute fox"?
Before she could second-guess herself any further, she knocked on the door.
There was a moment of silence, then the sound of movement from inside. The door opened, and there was Tails, standing in a t-shirt and shorts, his twin tails swishing behind him. His eyes went wide when he saw her.
"T-Tangle! Hi!" His voice came out higher-pitched than usual, and Tangle could see the surprise written all over his face.
She tried to play it cool, leaning against the door frame in what she hoped was a cool and casual pose.
It didn't work.
Her tail was standing straight up behind her, giving away her nervousness no matter how relaxed she tried to appear.
"Heyyyy Tails. How's it hangin'? Don't mind me, just... uh... stopping by for a quick check-up! Mind if I come in?"
Tails' smile was awkward, uncertain. "Uh-no!...sure thing, come in."
He stepped aside to let her in, then closed the door behind her. Tangle looked around the small room. It was neat and organized, with various tools and gadgets arranged on a workbench, blueprints pinned to the walls, and a modest bed in the corner. She sat down on the bed, trying to ignore the way her heart was now hammering in her chest.
Tails stood near the door, his hands fidgeting with the hem of his shirt. He seemed to be struggling to maintain eye contact with her, his eyes darting around the room before occasionally landing on her face and then quickly looking away again.
"So... uh, I'm doing okay..." Tails said, his voice uncertain. "What did you wanna talk about?"
Tangle's tail was still standing straight up, betraying her unease no matter how much she tried to appear calm. She took a breath.
"...I feel like we should talk about today."
Tails rubbed the back of his neck, a nervous gesture she was starting to recognize. "But the mission went off without a hitch, right? Best tail team ever?"
He was playing dumb, and she could tell. He knew exactly what she was talking about.
"Tails..." Her voice came out lower, more serious than usual. She wasn't used to using that tone, but this conversation required it.
The change in her voice seemed to hit him. His ears flattened slightly against his head, and he let out a small sigh.
"...I know," he muttered, finally moving away from the door to sit down on the bed next to her.
They sat in silence for a moment, both of them staring at different parts of the room, neither quite ready to start the conversation they both knew they needed to have.
Finally, Tangle spoke up, her eyes fixed on her hands as they tapped nervously against her lap.
"So, to start... Whisper and I are a thing. Just FYI." She said it quietly, almost apologetically. "I didn't answer you before."
Tails looked down at his feet, his tails drooping slightly behind him. "Oh... yeah, I guess that makes sense."
"But..." Tangle continued, her voice still soft, "Today was fun."
She chuckled, a genuine chuckle this time. "We really hit it off, huh?"
Tails lifted his head and looked over at her. She was still staring at her hands, her fingers drumming an anxious rhythm against her thighs.
"It got me thinking..." Tangle said, her voice barely above a whisper now. "And I dunno about you, but... did it get you thinking at all?"
She finally looked over at him, and their eyes met. Tails' eyes were wide, and she could see a small blush coloring his muzzle. There was no hiding it, no playing it off as something else.
Tails stuttered, his words coming out in a jumbled mess. "I... uh... well... y-yeah."
Tangle felt her own blush deepen. He's so darn cute when he's nervous. It's also *really* obvious he's crushing, too. She thought, confirming he was on the same page as her. That... that should make this easier, right?
She cleared her throat, trying to find the right words. "Listen, Tails, I... always thought I was just... uh... into girls, ya know? But that walk back today. There's somethin' about you... I wasn't really teasing before when I called you dangerous and a catch."
Tails' blush deepened, but instead of hiding, he wanted to meet Tangle where she was. He had to let her know how he felt, too. "Today really was a lot of fun. I... I wanna spend more time with you. I did mean everything before... you're a blast to hang out with. You're smart and energetic, and... well yeah... I think you're pretty."
Tangle cracked a smiled under her blush. Again with the compliments. She looked at him, really looked at him, taking in his features. The way his yellow fur caught the light, the earnest expression in his eyes, the slight nervousness in his posture. Whisper was right. He was very cute. But not just cute, he was handsome. An idea sparked in Tangle's mind. A crazy idea.
"Everything from earlier today had me confused... but if we're getting stuff off our chests..." Tangle began, her heart racing, "I had a thought, and I wanted to try something."
Tails' eyes somehow got even wider. She could see his chest rising and falling a bit faster, could see the way his tails twitched behind him.
"W-what's that?" he asked, his voice shaking with nerves.
Tangle reached out and grabbed his hand, feeling the warmth of his skin against hers. Her own heart was pounding so hard she was sure he could hear it.
"Tails..." She took a breath, steadying herself. "Have you ever kissed a girl?"
His face went bright red, the blush spreading from his cheeks all the way to the tips of his ears. He turned his head to the side, pulling his hand away to rub the back of his neck once again, and words started tumbling out of his mouth without any apparent thought behind them.
"Well I uh, well not exactly I mean it's not something I really put much thought into and well-"
Tangle cut him off, reaching out with both hands to grab his hand back, holding it gently but firmly. He looked back at her, and she made sure to catch his gaze, batting her eyelashes slightly. She had to know, she had to ask.
"Well... I've never kissed a boy before... would you like to try kissing a girl?"
Tails' eyes darted away at first, looking anywhere but at her face. She could see the internal struggle playing out across his features: the nervousness, the uncertainty, but also... curiosity, interest.
Finally, slowly, he looked back into her eyes, but he was terrified to answer verbally.
So he nodded.
It was a small nod, barely perceptible, but it was there.
Tangle felt her breath catch in her throat. This was really happening. She was really about to do this.
Slowly, carefully, she reached up with one hand and caressed Tails' cheek. His fur was soft under her fingers, and she could feel the warmth of his blush. He leaned into her touch slightly, his eyes never leaving hers.
Gently, she used her hand to guide his face toward hers, closing the distance between them inch by inch. She used little to no resistance, giving him every chance to pull away. She could feel his breath on her face, could see the way his eyes started to close as he got closer.
And then their lips met.
It was soft, tentative, almost chaste. Tangle could immediately tell that Tails had no idea what he was doing. His lips were stiff, uncertain, and he seemed to be holding his breath. But there was something endearing about his inexperience, something that made her heart flutter a bit.
She pulled back slightly, just enough to whisper, "Relax. Just... follow my lead, okay?"
Tails nodded, his eyes still closed, and Tangle leaned back in.
This time, she took more control, moving her lips gently against his, showing him the rhythm. She felt him start to relax, his lips softening, beginning to move with hers. His hand came up hesitantly to rest on her shoulder, his touch feather-light, like he was afraid he might break her.
Tangle's other hand came up to rest on his chest, and she could feel his heart hammering beneath her palm. Her own heart was racing just as fast, and she felt a warmth spreading through her body that had nothing to do with the temperature of the room.
She deepened the kiss slightly, applying a bit more pressure, and was rewarded with a small, soft sound from Tails; something between a gasp and a sigh. The sound sent a shiver down her spine, and she found herself pressing closer to him.
Tails was getting the hang of it now, his lips moving more confidently against hers, though there was still a sweetness to his inexperience. His hand on her shoulder tightened slightly, and she felt his other hand come up to rest tentatively on her waist.
The kiss grew slightly more passionate, more heated, and Tangle felt herself getting lost in it. This was different from kissing Whisper, not better or worse, just... different. There was a newness to it, an excitement that came from exploring uncharted territory.
Finally, she pulled back, both of them breathing a bit harder than before. They stayed close, their noses almost touching, their eyes locked on each other.
Tangle could see the wonder in Tails' eyes, the slight dazed expression on his face. His lips were slightly parted, and she could feel his breath mixing with hers in the small space between them.
For a moment, they just stared at each other, neither one moving, neither one speaking, just processing what happened.
Tails wanted more.
He leaned forward suddenly, closing the distance between them again, capturing her lips in another kiss.
This time, there was more confidence in his movements, more intention. He'd been holding back before, uncertain and nervous, but now there was a hunger there, a desire for more. The sudden initiative caught Tangle slightly off guard, but she quickly melted into it, a quiet happy squeal coming from her. Her hands moved from his cheek and chest to wrap around his back.
The kiss deepened, becoming more passionate, more intense. Tangle's tail wrapped around them both, pulling them closer together. She felt Tails' hands start to explore her back as well, his touch still gentle but growing bolder with each passing second.
Her own hands moved upward, through the fur on the back of his neck, her fingers feathering in the soft strands. She felt him shiver at the touch, heard another one of those soft sounds escape his throat, and it sent more warmth through her chest.
They were fully making out now, lips moving together in a rhythm that felt natural despite Tails' inexperience. Tangle tilted her head, changing the angle, and Tails followed her lead. His hands were more confident now, one splayed across her lower back, the other moving further down to tangle in the fur at the base of her tail.
Tangle let out a soft gasp at the sensation. That part of her tail was sensitive, and the feeling of his fingers there sent a torrent of sensations through her body. She pressed closer to him, her chest flush against his, and felt him respond by holding her tighter.
The little sounds Tails was making, soft whimpers and sighs, were absolutely adorable, and they were driving Tangle crazy in the best way possible. She'd never heard sounds like that before, had never been the one to draw them out of someone (it's usually Whisper doing it to her), and it was intoxicating.
Her mind was racing even as her body moved on instinct. She was enjoying this. Really, truly enjoying it. Her heart was fluttering, her skin felt like it was on fire, and every touch, every sound, every movement was sending waves of pleasure and warmth through her.
Maybe it just needed to be the right guy? Tails is great, after all. Smart, kind, talented, and apparently a quick learner when it came to kissing. The thought made her smile against his lips.
But even as she was lost in the moment, a part of her brain was analyzing, questioning. She'd always been so sure she was only into girls. She'd never looked at a guy and felt... anything, really. But with Tails, it was different. Was it because of their connection? Because of how well they'd worked together? Was it just... because it's Tails?
She didn't have time to analyze it further because Tails' hand on her tail started to move more toward her rear, and the touch sent another jolt of electricity through her.
Tangle made a decision.
Now she wanted more.
Gently but firmly, she pushed Tails backward, guiding him down onto the bed. He went willingly, his eyes flying open in surprise but not pulling away. Tangle followed him down, positioning herself on top of him, her legs on either side of his hips, her hands braced on the bed on each side of his head.
For a moment, she just looked down at him, taking in the sight. His yellow fur was slightly frazzled from her hands running through it, his eyes were wide and dark with something she recognized as desire, and his chest was rising and falling rapidly beneath her.
"Is this okay?" she whispered, suddenly needing to make sure, needing to hear him say it.
Tails nodded, his voice coming out breathy with exhaustion. "Y-yeah. This is... this is more than okay."
Tangle smiled and leaned back down, capturing his lips in another kiss. This position gave her more control, more leverage, and she used it to deepen the kiss even further. Her tongue traced along his lower lip, and she felt him gasp, his mouth opening slightly. She took the opportunity to deepen the kiss further, and felt Tails tense for just a moment before relaxing into it, his own tongue tentatively meeting hers.
His hands came up to her back again, but this time they were more exploratory, more confident. They moved down to her lower back, then lower still, hesitating at the curve of her hip.
Tangle arched into his touch, encouraging him, and felt his hands move to cup her rear, squeezing gently. The touch was tentative, questioning, but still sent pleasurable sensations down her core. Suddenly, almost instinctively, one of Tangle's hands landed at Tails' inner thigh, and started running slowly upward in a teasing caress.
Fireworks were going off in Tails' head, knowing where Tangle's hand was headed, and he felt the heat rush down to his lower belly now. His body was responding in ways he'd never experienced before, and he felt himself getting hard beneath her touch.
Tangle's hand continued its upward path, and then... she felt it. Her fingers brushed against the unmistakable hardness pressing against his shorts, and her eyes snapped wide open, completely missing the gasp coming from Tails.
Everything stopped. The realization immediately shocked her core.
That's right, she thought, her mind suddenly crystal clear through the fog of desire. He's a guy. He has a-
She cut her own thoughts off before that final word, but the damage was done. All the warmth, all the excitement, all the build-up; gone in an instant, replaced by a cold wash of discomfort that spread through her chest. Her hand reacted like it had touched something gross. Did she actually forget guys had... different equipment? Maybe she had convinced her mind and her body that she would react differently this time, that it would be different because of Tails? But this wasn't right. This wasn't what she wanted. She didn't want that. She didn't like the thought of that at all.
And immediately, crushing guilt followed. What had she done? What was she doing? This wasn't fair to Tails. She was leading him on. It was betraying their trust for each other. She was being a terrible friend. She had to stop everything, now.
She stopped kissing and pulled back abruptly, her hand leaving his lap, Tails' hands suddenly gripping onto nothing.
Tails blinked up at her, confused and breathing hard, a small whine from the sudden loss of sensations. "...Tangle, wha-"
But when he looked up at her face, he could see tears starting to build in her eyes, threatening to spill over. The warmth in his lower belly left immediately, replaced by concern and worry. Tangle was far more important than anything else.
He sat up quickly, catching his breath. "Tangle? Are you okay? What happened?"
She sniffled, trying to hold back the tears. "I'm sorry, Tails. I think things got... a little too heated? Everything was amazing until... until..." Tangle choked up a bit. She couldn't finish the sentence, it felt too harsh to say out loud. "I guess I got my answer." She let out a shaky chuckle through her light crying. "Heh, I don't like boys after all..."
Tails didn't say anything in response right away. He knew what happened without her saying it out loud. He felt where her hand last touched, where everything suddenly ended. His heart sank a bit, he couldn't deny that, but he knew his friend needed support more than anything right now. In an instant, he gave her a tight hug, wrapping his arms around her.
"It's okay," he said quietly, his voice gentle and reassuring. "I get it... really."
The tight hug sent Tangle over the edge, as she started to fully cry, the guilt overwhelming her. She tried to speak through the sobbing, hugging Tails back desperately. "It's just I feel like I led you on and it's not fair of me to do that to you and now all I can think about is how I took advantage of you and I was being so selfish and now I'm a terrible friend who doesn't care about your feelings and-"
Tails broke the hug suddenly, holding her at arm's length so he could look her in the eyes.
"You take that back," he said sternly, his voice firm but caring. "No one talks about my friend Tangle that way."
He smiled, his eyes closing for a moment. When he opened them again, they were warm and understanding.
Tangle looked at his face, her tears slowing down, a light laugh through the crying. She wiped her face with her sleeve, sniffling again. "You really are the best, you know that?"
She squeezed him tightly, burying her face into his chest, some of her tears soaking into his shirt.
"You're gonna make some girl the luckiest lady on the planet." She mumbled into him.
Tails chuckled lightly, trying to downplay her compliments. "Aww, nahh, I just wanna make sure my friends are okay, that's all."
Tangle groaned, her face still in his chest. "Ughhhh, you're so great. Why does my brain hafta be so dumb?"
Tangle sighed, and pulled out of the tight hug before bringing her face close to his again, her eyes red but sincere. "I really mean it, Tails. I'm so so so sorry-"
Tails cut her off again. "Tangle, really, it's okay. I was curious about everything too and... I'm really glad we got to do that." His muzzle went a little red. "It was... exciting." He paused for a moment, choosing his words. "My first kiss... first everything really. I never dreamed of doing that before... I'm glad it was with you."
Tangle looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of resentment or hurt, but found only genuine warmth and understanding. Hearing Tails speak so highly of her helped soften her guilt.
"Well, if it was okay..." She leaned forward and pecked his lips for a final quick kiss, soft and brief. "I'm glad we did this then."
Tails didn't respond, blushing once again from the quick kiss, trying to savor the feeling as long as he could.
Tangle stood up from the bed, wiping her eyes one more time for good measure. She took a deep breath, composing herself.
"I should really be getting back to Whisper," she said, her voice steadier now.
She put her tail out, a playful grin returning to her face despite the tear streaks on her face. "Gonna go in for the patented 'high fifteen' again?"
Tails smiled, standing up as well. He raised both his tails and slapped each of them against hers in their now signature move, the sound echoing softly in the small room.
"There we go," Tangle said with a genuine smile. The tension of the situation slowly evaporating. Tails immediately took advantage of that.
"So... you still need me to get that scratch on your back? And when's my massage?" He chuckled. Tangle immediately got embarrassed, but she knew it was playful.
"Oh c'mon! I know that joke was cringe, you don't gotta rub it in." She laughed through her response. The air in the room finally felt lighter, their playful banter returning.
Tangle gave him a salute, her usual energy returning bit by bit. "See you tomorrow, buddy."
"See you tomorrow," Tails replied, watching as she headed toward the door.
She opened it, paused for just a moment to look back at him with a grateful smile.
"And thanks again... for everything."
She stepped out into the hallway, closing the door gently behind her.
Tails stood there for a long moment, staring at the closed door. Slowly, he walked back to his bed and sat down on the edge before falling backwards, his back bouncing on the soft mattress. He could still feel the warmth of where the two of them were, where it all started and ended.
The room felt very quiet now.
He let out a long breathy sigh, his shoulders sagging. There was a heavy sadness inside of him, he couldn't deny it. The confirmation that Tangle wasn't attracted to boys, which meant she wasn't attracted to him, stung more than he wanted to admit. For those few minutes, he'd felt something incredible, something he'd never experienced before. And now he knew it wouldn't happen again.
But as he laid there, another feeling began to rise up alongside the sadness. Something warmer, something that made him hopeful despite everything.
They'd gotten closer today. So much closer. Tangle had trusted him enough to explore these confusing feelings with him, and he'd been able to be there for her when she needed support. That meant something. That meant everything.
He'd had his first kiss today. With someone he cared about, someone who cared about him. Even though things didn't end the way he might have wanted, there was something beautiful about that. Something he'd treasure forever.
Tails stayed there, lying on his bed, staring up at the ceiling, a smile now on his face.
"Yeah," he whispered to himself. "We're gonna be okay."
---
Meanwhile, Tangle opened the door to her room, stepping inside quietly. Whisper was sitting on the bed, reading a book, her Wisps floating lazily around her. She looked up as the door opened, her sharp eyes immediately studying Tangle's face, trying to get a read on her emotions.
She saw a small smile there, tired but genuine. The tear streaks on her cheeks didn't go unnoticed either.
"Got everything figured out?" Whisper asked softly, setting her book aside.
Tangle closed the door behind her and walked over to the bed, sitting down next to Whisper.
"Yeah, we got everything squared away," she said, leaning against Whisper's shoulder. "We had a good heart to heart and... explored a little bit. Tails is great and all but... ya know... boys..." She sighed, a sigh that clearly held a small amount of disappointment. "I know one thing for certain... I'm definitely a ladies only kinda gal."
Whisper's arm came up to wrap around Tangle's shoulders, pulling her closer. Her wisps huddling close as well, almost like a group therapy hug.
"I'm sorry it didn't go the way you wanted... but I'm glad you got answers." Whisper said quietly, her voice warm with understanding.
They sat there in comfortable silence for a moment, Tangle's head resting on Whisper's shoulder, feeling safe and loved.
Then Tangle spoke up again, a teasing note creeping into her voice.
"I have to say though... Tails is a pretty dang good kisser for a first timer, and those hands were not afraid to explore."
Whisper's tail went completely stiff, and a slight blush crept into her cheeks. She turned her head to look at Tangle, her eyes showing surprise.
Tangle grinned up at her, enjoying the rare sight of Whisper being caught off guard.
"Tangle..." Whisper said, her voice carrying a note of flustered embarrassment.
"What?" Tangle responded, pretending to act innocent. "I told you I was going to spill all the tea!"
She laughed, snuggling closer to her girlfriend, feeling grateful for everything. Grateful for Whisper's understanding, for Tails' friendship and support, and for finally knowing herself a little better.
