The Branch of Another Choice (ST3 AU)

Summary:

Do you ever get that feeling that something or everything in your life could have been entirely different if you had just made one different decision? Well then, that’s what the main premise of this fanfic is all about.

The premise of one minuscule detail changing causing a whirlwind of events to happen is nothing new. It’s the amount of possibilities that makes it all the more intriguing, so dear reader, here’s a question to think for yourself.

What if Dipsy was never brutally murdered in the Superdome in the middle of the night? What if a single decision altered the events that happened in the main game?

||Authors Note: If you recognize some of the content in this fanfic from a similar one on Wattpad that has about 100 reads, I’d like to say that no, it’s not copying if you wrote the original thing. Although I’d also like to say that this isn’t gonna be the same as what you see on the Wattpad version, this is more of a rewrite than a transfer. Thank you, enjoy.||

Chapter 1: How It All Began

Chapter Text

Springtime in an unknown year somewhere in the distant future, humanity as we know it is extinct, a new species emerged call the Teletubbies. They behave just like how we do, yet look completely different.

They feel, they hurt, they laugh, they cry. They live, survive, and die.

They have the same knowledge as us, passed down through many generations that had the same traits as them… until they could no longer go on. They know language, technology, science, physiology, math. Speaking of math, how it’s taught changes all the time, everything changes over times, but how it changes is based on your choices.

That’s basically the premise of chaos theory and the butterfly effect, a well known concept in mathematics, say a butterfly flaps its wings on one side of the world, well that could cause a major hurricane to form on the other side of the world.

A very… interesting concept to say the least.

But back to it! Yes, springtime, debatably the best season of the year, where the weather wasn’t too aggressive, yet not too soft. Wildlife roamed the wooded areas, the lakes freshwater felt nice to swim and relax in, grass was growing, the sun was shining, truly a perfect day.

The Mainland itself was undoubtedly the perfect place to live in, although no humans had stepped foot there for years, instead, the entire area is inhabited by four Teletubbies.

Firstly, there was Tinky Winky, the purple furred oldest of the bunch and the leader of the four. Second, there was Dipsy, the green furred, playful, and somewhat chronically tired one of his buds. Then, there was Laa-Laa, the yellow furred, second youngest, energetic bundle of joy. And then last but not least there was Po, the red furred, youngest of the bunch who despite her age was the hardest working of the four.

Although they were just friends, they acted as a tightly knit family, they lived together in harmony in their home, the Tubbytronic Superdome, or just the Superdome for short. There was also the beloved housekeeper/vacuum cleaner, Noo-Noo. Oh, and the Voice Trumpets or “Announcers”, the lanky speakers that appear out of the ground to announce… well… whatever it announced when it did.

But unbeknownst to the four, there was a fifth Teletubby, silently watching over them through hidden cameras and through the screens on their stomachs. This one was known as the Guardian, a white furred Teletubby who was assigned to watch over the four when they were first put there, to make sure they didn’t escape the mainland and see the rest of the world. He loved the four as if they were his kids, despite the fact none of them had met, and it seemed that it’d be that way for much, much longer.

Until today.

It seemed to be a normal day in the Mainland, the four were hanging out outside, Po was out by the lake, Noo-Noo also out there to accompany her, Tinky Winky was outside with Laa-Laa comforting her after she had a nightmare the previous night, and Dipsy was inside the Superdome sitting on the slide. He was pretty exhausted from playing with Tinky Winky and searching for his hat which he had lost a few weeks ago, and with the spare time he couldn’t help but ponder.

“Wonder what Po and Noo-Noo are doing at the lake? What did Laa-Laa dream about this time that’s got her so worked up?” And best of all. “I wonder where my hat is…”

But all these thoughts could wait until later, he was utterly exhausted and although he was hungry, he figured Po would probably set out a bowl of Tubby custard out for him later in the night. What difference would it make if he got some well-needed sleep? So as he got up from the slide and went over to his bed, he laid down and drifted into sleep without a worry in mind.

Meanwhile, outside of the Superdome, Po was happily strolling back to her friends from the lake. Noo-Noo wasn’t following behind her for some reason, but that was a thought that could be pushed aside.

Her pace picked up as the place she called home and her friends came into view, seeing her family by the entrance “playing”, which really was just consisting off Tinky Winky bouncing Laa-Laa’s bright yellow ball to her, who in return, pathetically hit it with just enough force to roll it back towards the silently concerned Teletubby.

“Laa-Laa, what even happened in that dream of yours? You’ve been acting so… unlike yourself since you woke up.” Tinky Winky asked, bouncing the ball one final time to Laa-Laa who grabbed it and set it aside.

“I said I don’t wanna talk about it, okay? It’s best that I just forget about it.”

“Oh… okay, well, let’s just go inside and wait for P-!”

But as Tinky Winky noticed Po speeding towards the house, he couldn’t help but cut himself of and grin ear to ear at the sight of her having finally returned, rushing over to her with a loud exclaim.

“Po! You’re back! Hooray!” He cheered happily, nearly knocking Po over as he suddenly threw his arms around her in an embrace, Po taking it with pride and wrapping her arms around as-well in return with a smile on her face.

“Hey Tinky, glad to see you too!” Po said, but her expression fell to one of concern as she noticed Laa-Laa staring down at the ground and kicking rocks. “Is Laa-Laa feeling any better since I left?”

“No, she’s just been so upset, I’ve tried bouncing her ball to her, that usually helps, but she just can’t seem to find her usual energy back. I’m starting to get worried.” Tinky Winky replied, staring back over at Laa-Laa with a sympathetic expression. But he tried shaking it off as he pulled away from the embrace and stared back at Po. “I’m starving, maybe talk to Laa-Laa first, see if you can comfort her. Then we can go inside and have some Tubby custard!”

Po nodded in agreement, she herself was also pretty hungry, but she figured she’d have her go at helping out her friend. As Po walked over to Laa-Laa, Tinky Winky followed behind, standing off to the side by the door waiting for the two.

“Hey Laa-Laa, you feeling any better?” Po asked, Laa-Laa barely raised her head to look at her before looking back down and kicking more rocks.

“No… not really, I just can’t get that bad dream out my head.” She replied, sniffling lightly.

“Oh, do you think you could tell me what happened in that dream?”

“I guess, I can’t remember much though, what I do remember was I was in a… dark void with a checkered floor… and then I suddenly was here… but something was wrong, and then I woke up.” Laa-Laa recalled, scratching the back of her neck as she spoke, like even recalling what she saw was getting to her.

Po couldn’t quite understand what Laa-Laa’s dream meant, but what she could see was that Laa-Laa was badly shaken by it. “Hey, what I can say is that we’re all here for you, and that you’ll get through it, okay?” Po said, before giving Laa-Laa a quick hug. “Y’wanna go inside and eat some Tubby custard now?”

Laa-Laa was grateful for the comfort, and custard did sound good right now. “Sure.” She picked her head up and followed Po along with Tinky Winky into the Superdome.

Immediately Po noticed Dipsy passed out cold in his bed, snoring, tossing and turning, it was normal for him though so she paid no mind. Walking over to the custard machine, she settled a bowl under the nozzle before hitting the power button.

But nothing happened.

Immediately she realized the power to the Superdome was off, groaning and walking over to the button on the left hand side of the door, pressing it. Immediately she heard a small crack come from the custard machine, looking over in time to see it vibrating before smoke bellowed out of the cracks and gaps of the machine.

“Ugh… it’s broken again.” Po sighed, walking to the back of the Superdome and grabbing a wrench from the tool bench, walking back over and opening the cover to the custard machine, immediately getting covered in a cloud of smoke.

“Ha! Oh man… that’s funny.” Tinky Winky bursted into a fit of laughter, wiping a tear away from his eye as Po side glared him, rolling her eyes as she tinkered with the internals of the custard machine until the smoke stopped. Pressing the power button before Tubby custard finally poured out the nozzle into the bowl.

“Phew, finally.” Po picked up the bowl of custard and walked over to Laa-Laa who was sitting on her bed and watching Dipsy snore and sleep in odd positions with a curious look on her face.

“Hey Laa-Laa.” Po said, catching the attention of Laa-Laa who immediately noticed the custard.

“Oh, hey Po, is that for me?” She said, pointing at the bowl with a risen eyebrow.

Po nodded, handing the bowl to Laa-Laa with a smile on her face. “Yep, here ya go! Hope this helps you feel better.” She said, walking back to the custard machine and pouring Tinky Winky, Dipsy, and herself a bowl. Setting Dipsy’s bowl down on the table for him to find later in the night before walking over to Tinky Winky.

“Here you go Tinky!”

“Thanks Po, you’re a lifesaver, any longer and I probably would’ve starved, heh…” Tinky Winky said, already sipping the custard through the straw and enjoying the food. And then focused on her own bowl, taking her time in finishing it.

Already after everyone’s bowls were finished, the three felt drowsy, like, really tired kind of drowsy. It was also starting to get dark outside so now was a good time to hit the hay for the night.

“I’m really tired… I’m gonna go to bed.” Po said, both Laa-Laa and Tinky Winky nodded in agreement, they felt the same way and went to lay down with Po.

“Good night.” Tinky Winky said before succumbing to the sweet, sweet feeling of sleep, Laa-Laa taking a hesitant moment before following. Leaving Po the last awake, she couldn’t help but think about Laa-Laa’s dream, the bad things happening, she knew it was just a nightmare but it still filled her with a sense of dread.

But that shouldn’t be worried about now, Po just brushed it off and finally fell asleep, today was a good day. And she was ready for whatever awaited.
