Work Text:
When Yuji got home, Megumi was already there, reading a book on the couch.
“Hey! I’m home!” Yuji called, locking the door behind him.
Megumi looked up. “Hi.”
Yuji scoffed as he toed his shoes off at the rack. “You could pretend to sound happy to see me.”
“I am happy to see you.” Megumi said in the same monotone voice.
Yuji smiled. “Good to hear.”
He padded over and leaned on the back of the couch.
“You keep squinting at that book.” Yuji laughed. “You look like Kamo.” Yuji said, now flopping onto the couch beside Megumi.
Megumi didn’t look up from his book. “What, Kamo like the clan?”
“No. Kamo from Kyoto.” Yuji whacked him lightly. “Didn’t you fight him during the student exchange event?”
“Oh, Noritoshi. Yeah, I fought him.” Megumi nodded, but his voice was faraway and he was clearly more focused on whatever he was reading.
Yuji watched with some kind of curiosity as Megumi squinted even further at the words on the page. A couple moments later, he held the book up to his face, practically burying his nose in it.
Yuji chuckled. “What are you doing?”
Megumi huffed impatiently. “Reading.”
“Doesn’t look like it. You haven’t turned the page once since I got here.” Yuji pointed out.
Megumi scowled. “This book just has a small font, it’s taking me a while to get through.”
Yuji shuffled closer and looked at the book over Megumi’s shoulder. He could read it just fine. Maybe it was a small font though, Yuji hasn’t read many books that weren’t manga so he didn’t have much to base it off.
“Yeah I guess it is… kinda small.” He said to be agreeable. “But…”
Megumi glared at him.
“But… I can read it just fine. Are your eyes tired or something?”
“No. My eyes feel fine.” Megumi assured, finally turning the page of his book.
He lifted the book right up to his face again.
Yuji asked his next question tentatively. “Do you need glasses, Megumi?”
Megumi finally dropped his book. “No. I just don’t feel like reading anymore. Come on, I’ll start on dinner.”
Megumi stood up and Yuji fell into the empty space where Megumi had been sitting. “Need any help?”
“No. Thank you, though.”
Yuji was content to just lay on the couch and scroll on his phone study while Megumi cooked dinner, but those plans were quickly ruined.
“Yuji!” Megumi called.
Yuji sat up. “Yeah?”
“Can you come here for a second?”
Yuji entered the kitchen with the sight of Megumi squinting at a box that must’ve come from the freezer.
“How long does it say to cook for?” Megumi asked, handing the box to Yuji.
Yuji tried not to make a joke as he read the box’s instructions. “Twenty minutes.”
He went to hand the box back but—
“What temperature?”
Yuji read further. “Two hundred degrees celsius.”
“And—”
“Flip them halfway through.” Yuji answered for him.
“Thank you.” Megumi said, looking away. He seemed embarrassed, so Yuji didn’t comment.
The next call came a couple minutes later, and this time Yuji had to set the oven for him because he couldn’t read what the dials said.
Nothing else happened during dinner, but Yuji noticed that Megumi was avoiding his phone and hadn’t picked his book back up.
Yuji cornered him after Megumi ignored yet another text ding! “Okay, what’s going on with you today?”
“Nothing’s going on with me.” Megumi lied.
Yuji narrowed his eyes. “I don’t believe you. You’ve never had a problem with your eyesight before, but you’ve been blind as a bat today!”
“Bats aren’t actually—” Megumi began.
Yuji cut him off with a finger held up. “Nuh uh. Tell me the truth.”
Megumi sighed, and Yuji could see him physically give in.
“I… my contact lenses tore, and I haven’t been able to replace them yet.” He confessed.
Yuji gasped a bit exaggeratedly. “You wear contacts? How did I not know this!”
Megumi shrugged. “It never felt pertinent.”
“Not even when you played two truths and a lie?” Yuji asked, almost forgetting the matter at hand.
“Er— I guess not.”
Yuji snapped back. “Wait but— wouldn’t you have reading glasses or something? For when you can’t wear your contacts?”
Megumi nodded slowly. “Yeah… I do have glasses.”
Yuji had never seen them. And he shares a room with the guy. “Why don’t you wear them?”
“I don’t like them.” Megumi shrugged.
Yuji frowned. “Why not?”
“They’re too…” Megumi searched for the right word, “clunky.”
“Clunky.” Yuji said back to him. Seriously, this guy…
“Mhm. Clunky.” He affirmed.
“And what would you have done if I wasn’t here to read instructions for you? Burn dinner? Starve?”
Megumi blinked. “I’d cook something else.”
Yuji threw his hands up in frustration. “My point is— you’re willing to sacrifice your livelihood so you can avoid wearing glasses that are too clunky?!”
Megumi made a face. “Well I’ll be able to get new contacts by the end of the week…”
“I don’t care. Go get your glasses and put them on, right now!” Yuji demanded.
Megumi sighed but didn’t fight it. He dropped his shoulders and entered their bedroom. He emerged moments later with thick black glasses perched on his face. They were kind of… clunky, but Yuji wasn’t concerned with that.
He had almost forgotten before, he was very in love with Megumi.
Yuji rushed to meet Megumi, hands landing on his face.
“Never take these glasses off. Ever.”
Megumi froze. “What?”
“I mean they look amazing on you. Don’t take ‘em off.”
“They’re not too clunky?”
Yuji shook his head. “Not too clunky. Seriously.”
Megumi seemed to relax a little. “Oh. Okay.”
Megumi’s reluctance melted away at Yuji’s insistence, and he ended up wearing them for the rest of the night. He was a bit disappointed when Megumi got new contact lenses, but he started wearing them more at night and in the morning, so for that he was grateful.
It gave Gojo a shock the first time he saw them, but he quickly got used to it and insisted that Megumi was copying his glasses. From then on, Yuji was a little picky on when Megumi could wear them outside the house.
