Work Text:

“Okay, you can do this, Okuto…today’s the day!” Nakamura

paced the rooftop of the school while fidgeting with his notebook, occasionally flipping through the many pages while wiping the sweat off his palms.

The teen skimmed through the text he had written as if his life depended on it.

“Okay, okay,” he sighed, “If he says this, then I can reply-

“You’ve always been amazing, Aki-” Nakamura paused and frantically shook his head. “I CAN’T CALL HIM BY HIS FIRST NAME LIKE THAT. WE AREN’T EVEN DATING!” He took a deep breath and flipped through another scenario.

“Okay, how about this?” He began to imagine a scenario where Hirose backed into the rooftop's fence, nervously blushing at the sight of the taller teen.

‘You…you like me? Nakamura?   That’s strange cause-’ Hirose felt a hand touch the tip of his chin, lifting his gaze toward dark-colored eyes.

‘What’s strange, Hirose?’ Nakamura spoke in a hushed tone, his eyes narrowed, his lips smirked as if he knew what the brown-haired teen before him wanted.

‘That I…’ Hirose shut his eyes and gently pushed Nakamura away.

The dark-haired teen laughed and leaned in, ‘Go on, Aki- say it.’

‘I lov-’

“AHHHHHHH.” The fantasy shattered as Nakamura comically slammed his head against the wall. “I CALLED HIM AKI AGAIN!!! WHY DID I THINK THAT HE WOULD BE EMBARASSSED BY ME?? I’M SO CRINGE!” He threw his book down to the dirt and fluffed his hair.

“What am I going to do…I can’t even confess right in my dreams to him…” Nakamura slumped into the bench and watched as the clouds rolled across the sky. He clutched his chest and felt his heart beat so loudly that he could feel it vibrating against his chest.

“I do like him a lot. He invited me to a lot of his hangouts, and I’ve run the scenario so many times in my head, but why-” He took out his phone and jumped as it lit up from a message from Hirose.

‘Sorry! I’ll be there soon! Got held up.’

Nakamura cracked a small smile and replied with a simple “no worries.” Part of him wanted to go the extra mile and just tell him to take his time, but the other wanted Hirose to get here as fast as possible so he could tell him how he felt. He put his phone into his pocket, leaned against the wall, and went back to his cloud watching.

Nakamura thought back to the many times that he tried talking to Hirose, especially the summer trip when he asked if he could be friends with him. It was the happiest he had ever felt toward someone. He sat up and checked his watch. It was getting rather late, but he didn’t mind. Could use the extra time to figure out what to say to Hirose whenever he shows up.

Nakamura tossed and turned and slapped his cheeks. “Maybe Kawamura’s manga can give me inspiration!” He opened the manga that his classmate drew for him and giggled to himself as his gaze glazed over to the confession scene.

‘Nakamura turned around, sakura petals floating around him. Before him, Hirose nervously fidgeted with his hands and uttered,’

‘I always loved you, Nakamura Okuto! I accept your confession!’ Before running into manga Nakamura’s arms in a loving embrace.

“If only it were that easy…” Nakamura sighed, not noticing that a presence was close to him.

“If what was easy?”

Nakamura jumped as he heard the familiar voice that was Hirose.

“HIROSE??” Nakamura flung the manga so hard he didn’t care where it landed; he didn’t want Hirose to see what was within the contents of that book. “WH- wha…how long have you been standing there??”

“Not long,” The brown-haired blinked, “Sorry I’m late, Oomori needed my help with something!”

“No, no, it’s fine…” Nakamura took a few deep breaths and turned away.

‘GAHHH HE’S HERE EARLY!! WHAT AM I GONNA DO I’M NOT READY I’M NOT READY’

“So-” Hirose interrupted, “What did you want to talk about? Your text sounded like it was urgent?”

‘AHHH CRAP CRAP’ Nakamura screamed as his head turned a bright red. He clutched his chest as his heart would not stop thumping. His breathing was staggered in random intervals to the point he couldn’t think.

“Nakamura!” Hirose’s voice broke through to the taller teen as he clasped his hands around Nakamura. “Hey, you okay? You don’t look so good.”

“Y..yeah…I’m fine…” Nakamura felt his breathing slow to a calming rhythm. The air around them cooled his head and thoughts as he turned to face Hirose. “Thanks, I just have a lot to think about.”

“Well, you can always tell me! It’s no fun keeping things bottled up, you know, honesty is the best policy after all!” Hirose giggled as he released his hands.

Nakamura looked down at the empty feeling and chewed his lip. He stood up and walked closer to Hirose.

“Hirose Aki!” He shouted, causing Hirose to jump in surprise.

“Y..yes?”

Nakamura took a deep breath and looked at Hirose’s beautiful brown eyes. His soft brown hair and gentle face.

“I…I always liked you…”

“I like you too, Nakamura!” Hirose innocently replied.

“No…not like that…” Nakamura took another deep breath. “I always admired you, Hirose, I like like you…ever since I first met you, I’ve fallen for you…You made me happy to be in love with you…so please! Go out with me!” Nakamura bowed and stared at the ground, not wanting to look at Hirose in the face.

‘I did it…I went for it…’

There was an awkward silence that lasted like forever between them…Nakamura’s heart started to speed up yet again as his arms began to ache.

‘Why isn’t he saying anything? Did I say something wrong…or does he not like me the same way?’

Nakamura dreaded that second outcome…he had nightmares of Hirose rejecting him…even when he and Hana were dating, he knew that it was over, but something in him told him to never lose heart and maybe go for it one day…regardless, Nakamura was glad he was brave enough to say it to the person he loved the most.

“Nakamura…” Hirose said, breaking the tension.

“Y…yeah?” Nakamura stood up straight, his eyes darting away from Hirose’s face, too scared to see what he would do.

“No fair!”

‘No what?’ Nakamura looked up and saw Hirose pouting at him, his face blushing far more red than Nakamura’s was. ‘He’s blushing?’

“How dare you confess to me first!!” Hirose whined while crossing his arms. “I was gonna do that later this month! I even had a bet with Takeuchi that I would confess to you first now because of you, and I lost money because of you!”

‘Wait, confess…First???’  Nakamura couldn’t believe his ears…was this another dream? A prank? This can’t be happening to him is it?”

“What are you talking about, Hirose?”

Hirose sighed and cupped his hands against Nakamura’s cheeks. His gentle smile and soft hands caused Nakamura’s senses to go into overdrive. “I’m saying is I liked you too…ever since Hana dumped me, I felt lost and confused, but talking with you helped me realize where my true feelings lie…being around you makes me feel comfortable more than any friend I’ve ever had…I thought about you a lot.”

“You…you like me too?”

“What do you want me to write it across your face, Okuto?”

“OKUTO??” Nakamura’s heart skipped a beat as Hirose went full-on with first-name business.

“What? Can’t I call my future boyfriend by his first name?” Hirose smirked.

“BOYFRIEND???” Nakamura was on cloud nine at this point. The person he fell for was calling him his boyfriend; he’s so happy he could die, and it would be okay. “You…you want us to be b…boyfriends??”

“Of course! If that’s okay with you?” Hirose giggled as Nakamura furiously nodded his head.

“YES, I WOULD LOVE TO HIROSE!”

“You can call me Aki.”

“Su..sure A…A…” Nakamura felt tears streaming down his face. “I can’t, I’m too embarrassed!!”

“Don’t worry, you've got plenty of time, Okuto!”

‘HE SAID IT AGAIN!’

Nakamura couldn’t believe it…Hirose and him are dating now, there’s so much going through his mind that he failed to notice Hirose leaning toward him.

“Okuto…”

“Yes?”

“Can you come closer?”

“Huh, uh, sure is there something-” Just then, Nakamura felt the soft lips of Hirose onto his own…

‘Hirose…just kissed me….Hirose kissed me….HE KISSED ME! Nakamura didn’t know what to do, but then remembered his favorite BL manga, Lovable Lunches. He wrapped his arms around Hirose’s waist and pulled him close in a warm embrace, closing his eyes to really savor that close contact he had merely fantasized about. Hirose tasted sweet and comforting. Nakamura didn’t want this moment to end, but he slowly pulled away to catch his breath.

“Wow…” he gasped.

“Was that your first kiss? Nakamura?” Hirose laughed as Nakamura begrudgingly nodded. “I can tell you need a lot of practice.”

‘This guy can’t be this cute!’ Nakamura whined.

“I’ll…do my best, Hirose!”

“Good, cause i’ll hold you up on that! At least you kiss better than Takeuchi.”

“WHATTTT!” Nakamura angrily gritted his teeth. How dare someone like him kiss his precious Hirose like that…the next time they meet it will be his end. The teen declared.

“Just kidding!” Hirose teased, “You are so easy to mess with!”

“HEY! DON’T DO THAT!” Nakamura whined.

“Come on, let’s go get something to eat! My treat.” Hirose held out his hand as Nakamura slowly took it.

Hirose gave a gentle squeeze and a soft smile as he turned away.

“Oh, wait,” Nakamura pulled away, “Let me get something.” Nakamura walked back to where he had thrown his manga and picked it up, dusting it off…the last page faced him as he read the words.

“Go for it, Nakamura!”

He smiled and ran back to Hirose, who held the door open.

“So what’s in that manga?”

“Don’t worry about it, it’s a secret!” Nakamura teased

“No fair! Don’t keep secrets from your boyfriend, Okuto!!” Hirose whined

“Serves you right, Aki…” Nakamura laughed as he held Hirose’s hand.

‘Boyfriend, huh? I like the sound of that.’
