Work Text:
"This is stupid."
"It's the consequences of your own actions."
"It was an accident!"
"That may very well be true, but that doesn't change the outcome."
A loud exasperated groan escaped the grade captain's throat and he leaned back in his seat. One hand aggressively ruffled his hair while the other rested on his desk. The pink cast around his forearm stood out like a neon sign against the rest of his monochrome exterior.
"I don't understand why you're banning me from fighting though! It's only my left wrist, I still got two feet and one arm that work perfectly fine!" he exclaimed, still trying to get his vice captains to change their minds. But Suo and Nirei just shook their heads at him. They had taken it as their duty to keep their bi-colored friend from overexerting himself.
His fractured wrist needed rest to heal properly, after all.
Nirei snapped his notebook shut. "This is for your own well-being, Sakura-san. The doctor clearly said that you need to keep your wrist immobilized for at least four weeks. The cast is helping with that, but you also need to avoid anything that can cause further injury. Thus, no fighting for you this month." he stated calmly.
The two-toned boy just glared at him. He knew his friends were right, but that doesn't mean he liked it. For fucks sake, this was a terrible time to have an injury like this. The amount of gang related incidents in Makoshi was at an all-time high and Bofurin had their hands full dealing with it right now. And here he was, the feared captain of class 1-1, felled by a broken wrist..
And the way he got this injury was so stupid as well! They had been fighting some thugs when he tripped over one of the many unconscious bodies littering the street. He had been so focused on beating one of these guys that he didn't look where he was going and went down at an awkward angle. He tried to catch himself with his left arm, but the speed at which he came down was apparently a bit too much to handle for the bones in his wrist.
He had claimed he was fine at first when his friends fretted over him, but after keeping a bag of ice on it for a while they still whisked him off to the local clinic. One X-ray later and boom, fractured wrist.
Because Sakura apparently really does not like doctors and hospitals and had been squirming so much the first two X-rays came out unreadable, he reluctantly agreed to let the doctor give him a mild sedative so they could do the imaging and casting without issues. Apparently it worked a bit too well because it didn't even register to him that they had put a bright pink cast on his arm until they were standing outside the clinic.
If looks could kill Kiryu would be a very dead man right now.
"Don't worry, Sakura-chan! You can still go on patrols with us and do small tasks! You just gotta keep away from the actual fighting." the pink-haired devil spoke from where he was perched on his desk. He didn't even flinch when his friend glared at him. He did not regret pushing for the pink cast while Sakura was out of it. It looked very cute on his captain.
Suo sympathetically patted his grumpy friend on the shoulder. "If you behave and adhere to the doctor's orders, you will be back to fighting before you know it." he said with a smile. The bi-colored teen rolled his eyes with a grumble, but finally left the topic alone. He already knew it was a losing battle for him to argue with his friends on this.
"Fine! But as soon as this cast is off I'm beating the hell out of someone." he then stated as he crossed his arms. A certain phone-addicted boy felt a shiver go down his spine as he saw those piercing mismatched eyes stare right at him.
He should probably start planning his own funeral in advance..
When the rest of their class found out about their captain's broken wrist the group basically split in two halves. One side panicked about his health while the other demanded to know which asshole had done this so they could go beat them up. Sakura quickly shut it all down before they made even more of a scene inside the school than they were already doing.
After everyone calmed down, the first thing they wanted to do was write on the boy's cast. He had looked at them weirdly when they asked, but he trusted them enough not to write weird shit on it like his classmates in middle school used to do with his desk.
Sure enough, there were only kind messages and drawings. A 'Get well soon!' here and a 'Swift recovery!' there, as well as some doodles of various animals and objects. A few sakura blossoms littered one side of the cast as well, courtesy of Kiryu. At one point one of his classmates, without the grade captain noticing, attempted to draw a dick on the cast. The teen was quickly disciplined by Suo while Nirei swiftly transformed the drawing into a strange-looking cat before Sakura could get a good look at it.
Honestly, the grade captain had to admit that the doodled-on cast looked a lot better than the plain pink one from before.
After that, time past by quite fast and in those first two weeks Sakura quickly found out about the up-and-downsides of having his arm in a cast.
The upside? Everyone does everything for you! Need to leave the classroom? Nirei will carry his bag. Someone asks for help painting over some graffiti? Tsugeura will take his brush and do the work for him. Need to go out to buy groceries? Someone from his class will show up at his doorstep before he can even think about leaving his apartment.
The downside?
Everyone does everything for you..
Even though they said he could still do things other than fighting, his friends just wouldn't let him do anything. Sitting down at his desk? Suo's there to pull out the chair for him. Homework? Kiryu just passes him a sheet with the work already done. Eating lunch? At least three different pairs of chopsticks will appear in his field of vision trying to push food past his lips.
Seriously, he should be glad they weren't following him to the bathroom to wipe his ass for him as well!
It was honestly ridiculous, the way they were mothering him. He just had a broken wrist and here they were acting like he shattered his whole skeleton! Even Sugishita would glare at him if he stood up for more than a minute. I mean, Sugishita always glares at him, but this one clearly meant that he would duct tape him to his chair if he did not sit down within the next five seconds.
It was stupid.
It was annoying!
It somehow made him feel warm inside..
He knew they meant well, no matter how infuriating his classmates' behavior was sometimes. He still had to get used to it, but he supposed he could entertain his friends' behavior for a little while longer. He definitely wished they would give him a little bit of breathing room though. The amount of care and comfort his friends were trying to provide was a bit suffocating at times.
Beside that, he was also starting to get quite antsy because he basically wasn't allowed to do anything. Sakura, true to his word, had not engaged in any fights. He simply watched from the sidelines while his other classmates dealt with whatever threat came in their path. Everyone could tell it was very hard for him to stay put as he kept unconsciously tapping his feet or clenching his fists. Still, he withheld himself from jumping into battle with them.
It was hard, but he knew he had to stay out of it if he wanted to be free of this damn cast as soon as possible. Proper rest was best for healing bones, so that's what he'll stick to.
Even if his friends sometimes went a little overkill on the babying.
Week three went by with just a little hitch. There was another fight, which was nothing new, and it went pretty well until one of the guys tried to get a hit in on Nirei. The boy did his usual pill bug manoeuvre, but the man saw it on time and stopped himself before he could trip over the blond. He then tried to strike the still curled up teen but before he could Sakura struck him first. With one swift kick the man was out cold before Nirei could as much as blink.
As much as the vice captain appreciated the help, he still fiercely reprimanded his friend for jumping in. Not only that, but he also banned the bi-colored teen from patrols for the rest of that week!
Sakura sulked all the way back to his apartment that day.
It was the end of week four since breaking his wrist. He had an appointment scheduled at the clinic in two days and Sakura couldn't wait for the doctor to tell him the stupid cast could come off.
He and a few of his classmates were on patrol again. This time it was just him, Anzai, and three others. His vice captains were off with another group today, much to his chagrin. He didn't mind spending time with his other classmates, but he'd grown used to his friends' presence at his side. Especially these past few weeks.
"Sakura, do you want some dango?" one of his classmates piped up from beside him, holding the treat in his hand. The bi-colored boy's eyes zeroed in on the food with interest. He reached out to grab it, but the other pulled it away from his grasp.
"Ah, ah! Your wrist is still healing! Open your mouth and I'll feed it to you." the teen said with a grin, dangling the dango in front of him. Sakura flushed red while the others around them laughed. Seriously, these guys! He snatched the food from the other's hand and stuffed the whole thing in his mouth, almost forgetting to take the stick out before chewing.
His patrol mates just laughed even harder. "Damn, Sakura-kun! You sure move fast for someone in a cast!" Anzai chortled from behind him. The two-toned boy rolled his eyes as he munched on the dango. "My fist will move even faster if you don't shut up." he retorted with his mouth still full. The other just snickered at his reaction. It was just too funny not to tease their captain. If things had healed correctly he would be getting that cast off soon, so they had to make the best of it while he was still banned from fighting and couldn't retaliate.
One of the boys threw his arm around the two-toned teen's shoulders. "Don't be upset, Sakura! We just want to make sure you rest that wrist of yours. We'd like to have our captain back at full strength sooner rather than later!" he said with a grin. Sakura rolled his eyes but a small smile still appeared on his face. Of course he knew his classmates would never say or do anything malicious to hurt him. He was definitely tired of that fucking cast though. He just wanted it off already!
"Uhm, guys? We got trouble." another one of his classmates suddenly said as he stopped in front of them. The rest of their little group looked up to see a small group of delinquents thrashing a shop display. They didn't seem very strong, but there were at least twice as many of them as of their patrol group. Not that that was a problem for the members of Bofurin.
Within the minute, both groups has clashed. Sakura obediently stayed out of the way with Anzai fighting close by in case one of the guys decides to try and attack the boy with a very obvious cast on his arm. It would be a dick move if they did but not surprising from people like this. Weak guys didn't mind playing dirty.
Which is, of course, exactly what happened.
The group suddenly unanimously seemed to decide that Sakura was the obvious weak point of their patrol group. They all charged at the bi-colored teen as he stood at the side of the road. Anzai let out a cry of surprise and did his best to take them all on and prevent them from getting to his captain.
"Anzai!" Sakura yelled as his classmate was struck across the face. The brown-haired teen wasn't weak, but he also wasn't one that was good at taking on a whole crowd on his own. The other boys were trying to get to them, taking the group on from behind, but they were mostly ignored.
The captain clenched his fists as he watched his friend take hit after hit right before his eyes. He had promised everyone he wouldn't fight. He had promised to trust his friends to take care of things! But he couldn't just stand by and watch this happen. Not when he could do something about it!
The two-toned boy took a deep breath. He raised his fists and got into a fighting stance. He looked for an opening in the crowd and when he had a clear view of the nearest enemy he-
"Sakura Haruka, don't you dare jump into the fight with that left arm of yours!"
The teen froze, mouth agape at the tone Anzai had just used on him. Did he really just get scolded like a little kid?!
One of his other classmates finally managed to push himself through the group and stood beside Anzai. He looked back at the bi-colored boy and pointed a finger at him. "You! Stay put! I will tell on you if you don't and our vice captains will not be pleased!" he yelled before turning his attention back on the delinquents before them.
Sakura just stood there, hands lowered and mouth still open in shock. What the hell?! Tell on him? What, are Suo and Nirei his parents now?!
One of the thugs groaned as he was kicked down. "What the hell are you defending that cripple for?" he yelled out in frustration as he tried to get up again. "I thought you guys only had strong people at Furin!" Before he could spout anymore bullshit, he was quickly silenced by a kick from Anzai.
"Don't speak of our captain like that. Can't you idiots see he's on break right now?" he hissed, now actually angry. The rest of their patrol group looked just as upset as him, glaring at the enemy while cracking their knuckles. It was almost like they had renewed energy when they sprung back into action and it only took a couple minutes more before the other group hightailed it out of there, well and truly beaten and humiliated.
Sakura barely managed to recover from his earlier shock when Anzai stomped over to him and grabbed him by his collar. "What the hell were you trying to do, huh? You literally have two more days before that cast comes off and you decide now is a good time to involve yourself in a fight? Are you trying to reset your progress?!" he yelled at him.
"Hah?! But you-" the captain tried, but his friend interrupted him. "No buts! So what if I took a couple of hits? I'm a member of Bofurin too, you know! I won't go down that easily!" The teen's gaze then softened and the grip on his shirt vanished. "I know you wanted to help, but we can handle it. Trust us on that, okay?"
The two-toned teen looked at his friend before sighing. He moved his one good hand through his hair. "You're right. I'm sorry.." he muttered. His classmate smiled and patted him gently on the shoulder. The rest of their little group looked relieved as well that he understood the error of his ways. Sakura flushed red at the fond way they looked at him. Seriously, these guys care way too much..
"Well then, let's go finish patrol and report back to Hiragi about the fight." one of the boys said. The rest agreed and off they went once again.
As they walked, Sakura thought back to what just happened. He understood why his classmates acted the way they did, but he couldn't help but feel useless. Helpless. His friend was being hurt right in front of him and he wasn't allowed to help. Not even a little bit! All because he was an idiot who couldn't break his fall correctly and broke a bone.
He liked that his friends care so much about him, but he never wanted to feel this useless ever again. He wanted this cast off pronto so things could go back to the way they were before!
So he was gonna rest the hell out of his wrist these last two days.
"Looks like it's healing very nicely." the doctor said as he looked at the X-ray they had just made. Sakura, though still very nervous to be in the presence of a doctor, didn't need a sedative this time around which he was very happy about. The next words from the doctor's mouth made him even happier though.
"I'm happy to announce that the cast can come off now." the man said with a gentle smile. Several small cheers were heard as his friends expressed their relief and excitement at the news. As difficult as it was dealing with a cast on his arm, it was probably way more difficult for his friends to deal with him. Keeping the most troublesome kid in Bofurin out of trouble was not an easy task.
Both of his vice captains has to keep him still when the doctor took out a specialized saw to cut the cast off. Strangers with sharp objects near him? Yeah, not a fan. Still, he kept himself as still as possible while looking anywhere but at the blade as the doctor did his work. He was not taking a sedative again. Who knows what his friends would do to him this time!
Thankfully, the process of taking the cast off was quite quick. The doctor inspected his wrist, did a few tests, before giving him the all clear. Sakura did a few experimental flexes as the man droned on about how he still had to be mindful of his wrist as it was still in the process of healing.
He let out a hum of acknowledgement before hopping off the table. He looked at his friends before stopping his gaze on a particularly nervous looking boy. His eyes glinted dangerously as he stared at his friend.
"Kiryu?"
"Y-yeah, Sakura-chan?"
"Start running."
The pink-haired teen let out a little squeak before darting out of the room. Sakura huffed with a smile before looking at the doctor, thanking him, and running out of the room as well. Suo and Nirei just shook their heads at their friends' antics while the doctor looked on in amusement. The Bofurin boys never failed to entertain him.
The sound of a message being received sounded through the room. Nirei grabbed his phone and looked at whatever had been sent before letting out a laugh. Suo looked over his shoulder and chuckled at what he read.
