Summary:

Rue isn't a very attentive sin.
That is, until he properly witnesses Litany's behavior around a shared friend for the first time.

Notes:

This is an idea I've had for a WHILEEEEEE !!
And I can't remember if I've ever mentioned it, I don't think I have, but six is the maximum amount of eyes Litany can consciously spawn. Any more than that is a stress response, but to most people (excluding Dozer, Shame, and maybe others) this looks like another normal ability of hers, as she most often cranks them up to appear threatening.

Also, Litany's telepathy is not one way, and others can communicate the same way to her, but most choose to speak out loud anyways. Force of habit?

Work Text:

It’s just another day, really. As the sinner the sights are set on hides away another day, all Rue is able to do is simply shrug as he silently floats away and groups up with the other sins. As he takes a seat on a cool bench, they hardly move, like a ghastly statue as he finds themselves situated right next to Litany, who doesn’t notice their presence in the slightest.

To his curiosity, she sit there with ten uncomfortable eyes, all turned down to the floor. To both of their surprises, the two of them could hear a familiar voice shout “Litany! Look forward!” from the sky. She does almost immediately, and Rue notices that Litany’s eyes appear to go back to their usual three in an instant once her gaze falls onto a certain something. He lifts their own head forward as well, and curiously, Shame is sitting right across the both of them.

The ram seems to have been eyeing the commander the whole time, but judging by her body language, Rue believed her to have been attempting to get Litany’s attention this whole time to no avail. Shame waves to the grey sin gently and with a hint of understanding in the movement, and Litany lightly waves back, her body racked with exhaustion but very eager nonetheless.

Rue continued to watch as Shame pointed to her own head, causing Litany to perk up and begin to move around where she sat as though she were speaking, but no voice was audible. In Rue’s eyes, at least. Looking forward again, Shame appeared to be just as invested in this development, her mouth not opening in the slightest but certainly smiling.

What did Litany’s voice even sound like? To Rue’s knowledge, the commander was never once in a situation in which she had to communicate with them. Despite this, they always imagined her to be on the no-nonsense, aloof side. How many of her relationships were aloof in nature? He’s only ever seen her stuck with Dozer and Kookoo, mostly the former, but he would be lying if they said they never once saw her talking to Shame.

Granted, they didn’t know Shame that well, either, being invited to her domain by… who was it, again? Doppel? The Duk? Even so, he enjoyed her company, regardless. Her muscular physique wasn’t for show, certainly able to body sinners if she could close the gap in a desirable way. A master at putting the pressure on others, and strangely enough, more-so than Litany herself, sometimes. Despite her intimidating stature, she was a rather kind sin, and in the few times he’d properly talked to her, Rue felt more seen than ever.

And when Dozer always seemed to have some order or two for her? No wonder Litany found so much solace in the company of the ram. Heck, Rue wouldn’t be surprised if the commander was the first person Shame ever invited to her beacon-ridden domain.

“Rue, up here!”

Having their thoughts be torn away for a moment, Rue flinched briefly from the sudden interjection, but lifted their head up to see the intimidating yet pretty presence of Sundial. Her eyes were always frightening, dark yet bright, that bore into Rue in a way that very few others could. Something that often worked in its favor, none able to look away for too long.

“You always spend so much time out in Fess around those two…” Its limps fidgeted a bit. “Did you really never see that look in Littie’s eyes before?”

Rue shook their head. “Oh, um… not once, really.”

“I only ever see Shame, like, once or twice a week, and I’ve been more attentive than you!”

It laughed and laughed as all Rue could muster was a sigh, but shortly after, their conversation was put to a quick halt by somebody shouting Sundial’s name. Her eyes fell off of the ghastly sin beneath her and right onto Shame, whose head was turned for a quick moment towards the sky.

“What was that you just called her?” She asked.

“Littie! I came up with it just now!” The skybound sin twirled. “Aren’t I smart? Isn’t it cute? Isn’t she cute?”

Hearing these words, Litany’s face shifted into a darker grey hue as she buried her face in her hands. Shame let out her iconic deep and hearty laugh, and while neither onlooker could see it, they were certain they could feel the commander’s heart begin to race faster than it ever had at that full-of-life sound. As far as Rue was aware, he has never been attracted to anyone before, but if they both felt so comfortable at each other’s sides, it surely could be great.

As they sat and pondered, they were mildly startled by Litany suddenly standing up and running over to Shame, holding her tightly in a hug. She was certainly just as surprised as the other two, especially being effectively charged at by a knight in heavy armor, but quickly came to reciprocate the contact, giving Litany a nice squeeze, even if the armor blocked a lot of that force out

They remained in that position for a little while, and Rue could only assume they must be communicating this or that in their heads again. If only he could see Litany’s face, and whatever look she had in her eyes, but it couldn’t have been bad, with Shame smiling and laughing the entire time. Sundial seemed to no longer be paying attention, twirling around on her own accord without a care in the world.

As they pulled out of their hug, Shame took Litany’s cold hand and the two ran off from the benches, heading who-even-knows where with no plans on coming back here any time soon. If they had a mouth, Rue would have a slight smile, as light tears began to drip from their eyes.

Having anyone that close, even if it’s just one friend, would surely be a lovely blessing.
