Chapter 1: The Birth of a Significant Promise

Chapter Text

Spoke, as it was the end of the school day, and the two-day weekend had finally rolled in—he immediately texted Mapicc, asking to hang out. He waited outside the front gates as his other sibling, Flame, went in the car with Parrot and Wemmbu. Parrot was picking the two up, but then he quickly realized that Spoke wasn't in the car yet.

"You coming, Spoke?"

Parrot asked, the car window sliding down as he started to anticipate an answer from Spoke. Until then, he only received a head shake from him. Parrot smiled and nodded, already knowing what's up. He's going to be hanging out with Mapicc, he assumed confidently.

"Alright, see you buddy. Text me if I'm going to be picking you up."

Spoke nodded and gave an excited thumbs-up directed to Parrot. The car window slid back down and started to drive away. Once the car was finally out of sight, his phone buzzed two times. He hurriedly pulled it out of his pocket and turned it on—seeing Mapicc's notification and got really giggly.

SpokeIsHere—Mapicc

SpeakIShere: yoooo wanna hang out??????? im at the school gates

Maypickk: sure bruh

Maypickk: I'll be there by a few

SpeakIShere: AIGHT BETTTT

Spoke turned off his phone, eyes darting around and hoping Mapicc will just show up NOW!! He was feeling very impatient, especially because they barely got to hang out all week. He started fiddling around with his fingers until Mapicc finally decided to show up.

He arrived, waving excitedly towards Spoke with a smile on his face. He waved back with the same enthusiasm. As they approached closer to each other; a warm hug was initiated between the two. Mapicc gave the best hugs ever, he made sure of that!! But, not as good as Parrot's though, those were TOP TOP!! Especially with the extra warmth that his avian brother’s wings can provide him.

Anyways, they started to plan what they were going to do for the next few hours whilst sitting on a park bench. They came up with multiple ideas, but can only ever do one today—the others they can do tomorrow. As they sat in silence for a couple more minutes—Mapicc spoke up:

"Hey, we can go to the river downtown, the one where Mr. Minutetech always brings us!!"

Mapicc suggested. Spoke thought about it. It seemed like a good idea! The two liked going there either way, so he agreed without any more further thought.

"Yes!!! I wanna go there too!”

Spoke exclaimed with joy as he stood up alongside Mapicc, now planning to go to the river. It was gonna take an hour or so to get there when walking, so they accompanied each other with small updates about what’s going on at home, and how their homework and end-of-year projects were turning out. But, they also gossiped a whole bunch about Leowook and something that’s going on with Parrot and Wifies. Now, it wasn't any of their business, but Mapicc is his BEST FRIEND!! Of course he'll tell him everything!!

The two sometimes stopped by at a gas station to rest, or somehow mess around because they were both chungies.

After a while, the two decided to settle down for a small bit again at another gas station that they usually go to whenever they decided to go to the river with Mr. Minutetech by car. As they stepped foot inside, the bell atop the door rang and was greeted with a familiar figure.

“Hi Spoke, hi Mapicc.”

Planet greeted with their welcoming smile that everyone loved. Spoke immediately rushed to them and tightly embraced them.

“PLANET!!!” Spoke yelled. Planet was his friend since elementary school, along with Mapicc.

“Sup dude.” Mapicc approached slowly.

“Sup!”

Mapicc and Planet greeted each other casually, dabbing up in the process whilst Spoke was still hugging them. After a small while of hugging and talking for a bit, Spoke and Mapicc went to the aisles and looked for snacks. They were searching for anything good they could digest. Eventually, they finally decided on what they wanted and went to the check out.

Planet took the stuff and started to sum up the price with excellent skill. It was obvious they have been working here for a long time to move this fast.

“Where are you guys going? The river?”

Planet asked as they scanned the items with ease. Spoke responded with a nod, and so did Mapicc. Planet smiled as they finished checking out the last of the snacks and handed it to the both of them.

"15 bucks, please. Tax is included." Planet reached out their hand. Spoke got the intrusive thought on just wanting to bolt straight out without paying, but he'll never do that! Especially to Planet!!

"OKAY!! Me and Mapicc will split up the pay!!"

Spoke took out his wallet and Mapicc took his out as well. They gave the money to them, and Planet started counting. The devious two felt confident they didn't miscount the pay this time, but, all hope was crushed when Planet announced that..

"You guys are three dollars short.."

...

Silence fell upon the three, and then laughter erupted, Spoke being the loudest one. How could they possibly have miscounted again? This was most likely the 6th time, or they've probably lost count!! Oh, it would've been so embarrassing if it wasn't Planet that was currently serving them right now.

"My bad! I forgot to add a bit more!!"

Mapicc admits, quickly fiddling with the insides of his wallet and placing down three coins. Planet checked again, hoping he didn't mess up. By the time Planet had finished counting, Spoke was out of breath from laughing like a hyena.

"You got it right, wow!"

Planet clapped, and Mapicc let out a proud smirk like he just saved the day. Spoke calmed down from all the laughing and let out a huff. They ended up talking a few minutes more before deciding to head out the store, bidding farewell to their dear, beloved friend, PlanetLord.

The walk to the river continued, conversing with each other and laughing together.

By the time they had finally arrived, the sun had already set.

As they walked through the forest, they were greeted with a magnificent, glowing river. The fireflies gave it light.

They were here.

The stars combined with a river that were surrounded by glowing fireflies sent the two in a feat of solitude. Spoke and Mapicc sat down together near the stream, their earlier conversations now died down and the atmosphere was more calmer than ever.

Spoke placed his hand into the stream, feeling the lukewarm water hitting his palm. He glanced at his best friend, his tail thumping lightly on the grass as he suddenly thought of something. Mapicc returned his gaze, and then chuckled.

"Dude, what?" He calmly interrupted, his voice piercing through the earlier silence. "Something in your mind you wanna talk about?" He spoke again. Spoke turned his head back to the river, his ears lowering back down a bit.

"It's..." Spoke let out a small sigh, the snacks beside them were now long forgotten. "Can you make me a promise, Mapicc?"

He asked. Now, Mapicc would usually chuckle at how Spoke is now trying to be more serious, but something about his tone made him feel like this was something more important than just a dumb promise.

"Yea, sure! What is it?"

Mapicc adjusted his position real quick, his arms behind—providing him some support. He waited for Spoke's response patiently, the sound of the river filling in their state of peace. Spoke finally got the courage to ask what he wanted to ask;

"Can you promise that.. anytime we can't find each other, or.. we somehow can't access any form of contact, we would go to this river?"

....

That promise caught Mapicc off-guard. He was expecting another dumb promise that was covered with fake seriousness. Right now, that didn't seem to be the case at all. Mapicc just wanted to laugh it off, say; 'what a dumb promise!'—even if.. it wasn't. He knew something was gonna happen soon enough the moment Spoke said that, and he can't help but worry.

Still, he had to say he promised. Mapicc takes his promises very seriously, especially with his best friend.

"Yes, dude. I promise."

He smiled as Spoke's tail wagged with joy, happy that Mapicc was willing to go there whenever they couldn't somehow contact each other. Mapicc saw Spoke gaze at the fireflies, and so he did as well.

Mapicc was still registering what Spoke had said earlier—but he can't seem to tell where Spoke was going with it. Sure, the promise itself wasn't dumb at all like all the other ones they joke about, but.. somehow lose contact of eachother? That sounded like Spoke was implying something awful will happen soon.

This caused him to go in a small spiral of thoughts. He instinctively started to ruffle Spoke's hair for his own self-comfort due to the sudden stress. The voidling seemed to notice this and turned his head towards Mapicc.

"You okay, buddy?" Spoke asked. Mapicc looked at him as well.

"Yea, I am.. Just, thinking about the promise you just made, bro." Mapicc admitted. There was no reason to hide what he was thinking about. Spoke chuckled and his hand patted Mapicc's back.

"Dudeee, it's just a what-if in my mind, bruh," Spoke reassured Mapicc, "Nothing will go wrong I promise!!"

He still can't help but feel something will happen, but if Spoke told him nothing will go wrong—then nothing will go wrong. He takes his word for it.

Mapicc chuckled and scooched closer to Spoke, "Aight bro, it's whatever," He chuckled. His best friend chuckled back.

Mapicc ran his hands through Spoke's black hair, also trailing the small amount of silver white streaks the voidling he had gotten done a while ago. Spoke's tail wagged lazily against Mapicc's stomach, tickling him a bit, but he didn't mind at all.

They started to count the fireflies, often losing track of what number they were on, and laughing together for how dumb they sounded trying to even compute how many there were. Everytime Spoke said something incorrect—Mapicc would correct him, and Spoke would then imitate him by doing a dumb nerd voice. This caused Mapicc to either playfully shove him away, or jokingly hit him on the shoulder.

They were completely engrossed in their own world that they forgot about time and how late it was starting to get. Conversations and laughter together lasted for hours. Spoke was completely oblivious of the amount of notifications that were getting sent to him, but, what mattered right now was Mapicc. His best friend.

We'll go to this river any time we can, Mapicc told himself. It was nice out here. He could definitely develop more memories with Spoke than in any other place. It was calm, and they could definitely have fun by throwing rocks, or counting stupid fireflies until they got tired of how constantly they would mess up.

It was about 11:37 PM by the time Spoke decided to check his phone. Piled with notifications from Parrot and his other siblings.

"Hehe, I didn't realize!"

Spoke giggled, thinking about calling Parrot and reassuring him that he was safe and sound, just losing his sense of time being with Mapicc.

"Well, it's not our fault either way, bro. We were distracted!" Mapicc responded as Spoke's phone rang. Seeing as it was Parrot, he assumed that his best friend's avian brother saw that Spoke had seen his texts and was now calling him.

Spoke answered the call and was greeted with Parrot's whining. Mapicc couldn't help but cover his mouth with his hand from the chuckle he so badly wanted to let out—it seemed like Spoke was doing the same thing as well. Eventually, Spoke told Parrot his location, Parrot was gonna be there in twenty, and hung up right after.

Spoke noticed the neglected snacks beside them and chuckled again. Man, this night was full of giggle fits, am I right?

"Dude, Mapicc... We might've like.. forgotten about the snacks we bought..."

"I'm dead. Bro— we— we.. Oh my gosh dude—"

Mapicc exaggerated and wheezed loudly. What could possibly be so funny about forgotten snacks? It was so stupid to laugh about it, but if Spoke was laughing with him; so he didn't see the problem with it.

"Bruhhh," Spoke groaned as he stood up, stretching and cracking his knuckles. "We should get ready!!" The voidling loudly says. Mapicc sighed and stood up as well, taking the snacks and splitting them up with Spoke.

Soon enough, they were out at the side of the road, waiting for Parrot to come. They shoved each other in the shoulders playfully, and kept making super unfunny jokes that made them laugh.

"Can I lowkey have a ride back home," Mapicc asked, pressing his index fingers together. He cringed hard at the sight of his own movement, and it made Spoke laugh.

"Yea dude, I'm pretty sure Parrot wouldn't mind!!" Spoke nodded, trying not to cringe as hard as Mapicc.

Eventually, Spoke's older brother arrived. Spoke called shotgun and went in the front. Mapicc rolled his eyes and almost had a dumb argument with Spoke, but he still went in.

Spoke put on his stupid gacha-life playlist which he and Mapicc started to sing. They almost felt bad for Parrot for having to bear this for—who knows how long! Either way, Parrot was too tired anyways. Fortunately, It was a 10-minute drive to Mapicc's house and there won't be loud voices screaming in his ears any longer.

When they reached Mapicc's house, he got off and waved goodbye to both Parrot and Spoke. They drove off eventually and he went inside. He didn't even realize how tired he was, and he was so glad he'd be able to fall asleep right after. His eyes felt so heavy when he went to the bathroom and brushed his teeth. Mr. Minutetech was probably so heavily asleep right now, and he should be as well.

As soon as he entered his bedroom, he immediately changed and reached out to his bed and flopped right on top of it. Pulling his own blanket on top of himself and blacked out into nothingness.
