It Was Fate

Summary:

Going home late from work changes Ruskin's entire life.

Work Text:

Ruskin never forgot the day when he first met with the love of his life - his employer, Mr. Milverton. That afternoon changed him forever and gave him a meaning. Ruskin sometimes wondered how he was able to feel happiness before knowing about Mr. Milverton's existence. Now, he was his joy and his greatest wish came true. Mr. Milverton, while he was aware of his feelings, didn't love him back - but being on his side and making sure that the smile never disappears from his face was enough to feel content. The love he had for Mr. Milverton was what made his heart beat ever since that day.

Ruskin didn't doubt that their meeting was led by the hand of fate. And every morning he woke up, he recalled those precious memories, the event that showed him the path to paradise.

The sun was about to set, but it was still shining from the sky when Ruskin was about to head home that day. He was working as a simple editor at the Heim News Agency, the biggest publisher house of Great Britain. It was not easy to get the position, but Ruskin had natural talent for editing and administrating things. He was talked about as someone who will eventually get a promotion and become an editor-in-chief of one of the newspapers the so-called King of Media, Charles Augustus Milverton owned. Ruskin worked hard to achieve his goal and always stayed in the office an hour later than his colleagues. Now, he was sure that this decision was one of the reasons why he got blessed with his current happiness. But on that afternoon, Ruskin had no idea of what turn his life would soon take. He was walking home with the feeling of satisfaction over getting the work done for the day.

But he was quickly dragged out of his thoughts. He suddenly felt the scent of an expensive perfume and this made him raise his head. In that moment, his breath got cut away from the sight of what he witnessed. The most beautiful man - was he even a mere human and not an angel instead? - was walking towards him on the corridor, his steps were soft and air-like, like he truly just fell from heaven.

Ruskin didn't doubt this. Someone who had the appearance that this man needed to be the most powerful creature a mere editor like him can ever encounter! The light of the setting sun sparkled up in the man's curly, white hair and turned the locks shine in silver. His face and skin was pale and pure like the most perfect porcelain ever crafted by man - and behind the man's glasses, a pair of golden eyes glanced to Ruskin. He didn't know if it was even the reality or he was dreaming. Ruskin could swear that it was the latter. Suddenly, everything turned faint around him, the only one he could see clearly was this beautiful, perfect man. And Ruskin was sure that he wanted to continue to watch him, bathe in his mighty presence for the rest of his life.

When he got back to his senses, he was alone in the corridor, frozen in the sunset. He started to walk again, slowly, with a new wish forming in his heart.

Ruskin let out a sigh. Mr. Milverton very much turned out to be real and his dream came true. He was allowed to watch his employer for the whole day, much more than that stolen glance that he got from him that day. Yet, his memories of their first encounter remained one of his most treasured ones, which Ruskin knew that he will forever keep in his heart.
