Chapter Text
Sara Lee first encountered Wolhye Auclair at a junction where nothing important was supposed to happen.
That was how most deviations began.
The corridor was neutral territory—administrative passage between briefing sectors, designed to discourage lingering. People moved through it quickly, efficiently, without reason to become memorable.
Sara did not adjust her pace for it.
She never needed to.
The world adjusted for her instead.
She registered Wolhye before Wolhye fully registered her.
Not visually first—Sara did not rely on ordinary sequencing—but structurally. There were individuals who existed as background probability noise, and there were those who persisted across multiple projected outcomes.
Wolhye was the second type.
She stood near the side of the corridor, not blocking it, not occupying it incorrectly, but positioned in a way that suggested she had considered all correct positions and chosen the one least likely to be challenged.
That alone was enough for Sara to classify her as relevant.
Wolhye looked up.
There was a delay before recognition fully settled. Not uncertainty—processing. As if her attention moved through internal filters before arriving at conclusion.
Sara Lee.
The red earrings shifted slightly as Sara turned her head.
Wolhye’s gaze caught on them first.
Most people did.
Not because they mattered.
Because they confirmed stability in a system that otherwise did not offer it.
“Lee,” Wolhye said.
Sara stopped.
Not because she needed to.
Because the interaction had already been selected.
“Yes,” Sara replied.
A pause formed.
Not empty.
Weighted.
Wolhye’s expression suggested she had expected something more efficient from the exchange and was adjusting to the absence of it.
“I’ve seen your reports,” Wolhye said.
Sara considered this.
Reports were summaries of outcomes after decisions had already been finalized. They were not relevant to the act of decision itself.
“Then you are already informed,” Sara said.
Wolhye’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Not hostile.
Focused.
As if Sara had failed to behave like a variable she could easily categorize.
That failure, if it was one, did not correct itself.
Instead, Wolhye remained.
Sara noted that.
And did not dismiss it.
