Sunglasses are always a must when you go to the beach. How else are you going to discreetly check out people? And boy, are there guys to check out. You mentally thank your friends for changing it up and choosing a different beach than usual. You’re used to places frequented by families, and if you’re lucky sometimes there’ll be a decently attractive older brother or a sort of cute lifeguard.
The patrons of this beach can only be compared to the weather: hot, hot, hot.
You adjust your shades while you lean back on your towel. The umbrella you lie under wards off some of the heat, but you can’t help but feel a little regret at not joining your friends in the water. However, you are reluctant to give up your view of two very cute boys passing around a football.
One seems significantly taller than the other, but they both sport muscular physiques that you can’t help but appreciate from your spot in the shade. You’re aware that on a beach full of young, good looking people, everyone is trying to show off, but you’re certainly not complaining with every flex of their arms. Thank god for sunglasses, there would be no other way to hide how your eyes widen to the size of saucers as the taller one stretches his arms above his head.
“Jungkookie! Catch!” The shorter one runs backward before launching the football forward. The other boy you had been ogling, “Jungkookie” apparently, sets off in a sprint before the ball effortlessly sails into his waiting hands. You purse your lips in attempt to prevent an appreciative smirk from creeping onto your face. Only your eyes are covered, not the rest of your face, and you don’t want to be caught smiling like a creep.
“Y/N!” The voice of your friend shocks you out of your daze as she comes bounding up to you. “Come in the water with us!”
“Oh no, I’m fine.” You hold up a hand to signal her to stop asking, but instead she takes it and starts leading you to the ocean.
“But don’t you want to cool off? It’s sweltering!” She has a point there. You reluctantly trudge behind her, slightly dragging your feet through the hot sand, when you notice that she is leading you in the same direction you had been staring the whole time. Not she knows that. At least you hope that she doesn’t. You’ll never hear the end of it if she finds out that you had forgone swimming in favor of ogling some boys. Maybe she’ll forgive you if she sees how attractive they are. After all, they are right there.
Oh my god, they’re right there.
Your eyes flicker to the side slightly as you pass “Jungkookie” and your nose is greeted with a subtle mixture of salt, sweat, and musk. Your face heats up from being able to smell him, and your pace quickens behind your friend, eager to cool off in the water.
“Hey, they’re kinda cute, don’t you think?” Your friend nudges you with her shoulder once you’re out of earshot of the boys and gives you a little smirk. Oh, if only she knew.
“Y-yeah, I guess.” You laugh nervously as you two join the rest of your friends where they are gathered in the water.
“Finally! She decides to join us!” One of them says, playfully splashing a little water at you. You giggle, your eyes scrunching up behind your sunglasses as you throw some water right back at her.
“Yes, I’m here now. You’re welcome, everybody,” you announce dramatically, causing your friend to roll her eyes and splash you again. Unfortunately, your other friend is caught in the crossfire (cross-water?), prompting a surprised squeal and an even bigger splash in retaliation.
Eventually, everything devolves into a full on water fight. You find yourself scurrying back to the shore to escape the relentless spray from you friends. Your stomach hurts from laughing so much as you continue to watch from a distance how your friends continue to pelt each other with water. You’re so busy watching them that you don’t hear the yell of, “Go long, Jungkookie!” And the large body barreling towards you.
Suddenly, you find yourself pinned to the damp sand, with another body hovering over you. Your view is suddenly brighter than before, almost blinding, and you’re not sure if it’s because of the sun overhead or the gorgeous boy in front of you. Then you realize—your sunglasses. They’re gone.
“Sorry, sorry!” The boy quickly hoists himself up and tries to set you upright as well. You absentmindedly take his outstretched hands, but he tugs too hard when he lifts you up, and you’re sent flying into his chest.
You give a small squeak as you place your hands on his chest in an attempt to catch yourself. If you weren’t so flustered at the present situation, you would have taken the moment to appreciate the fact that holy shit his chest is firm.
You stand there speechless for a few moments, your face red from both the heat and your proximity to the boy. His mouth is moving and it takes a few moments to register that he’s asking if you’re okay.
“Oh, y-yeah! I’m fine!” You quickly return your hands to your side as you regain your balance.
“You sure? I think I ran into you pretty hard.” You are about to reassure him that you are indeed okay, when the other boy he had been playing with runs up behind him and calls out.
“Hey, Kook! If you wanted to get a girl under you, there are more subtle ways to do it!” At his comment, you turn bright red, and it’s not from getting sunburnt. You stumble back to put a few feet of distance between yourself and the boy.
“Shut up, Jimin-hyung!” He yells behind him. He turns back to you. “Sorry, about that. Ignore him, he’s just annoying in general.”
"I heard that!” Jimin shouts.
“Hey, hyung, what’s that in the water?”
“Oh shit, the ball!” Jimin stumbles into the ocean as he tries to retrieve the football from the waves.
“He deserves it. I’m Jungkook by the way.” He laughs at Jimin’s attempt to chase the ball in the water before offering his hand to you.
“I-I’m Y/N,” you say as you shyly take his hand, taking note of the callouses on his skin. His hand returns to his side.
“You absolutely sure you’re fine? No bruises, anything?” He starts looking you over to check for any injuries, and your exposed skin heats up under his gaze. You fidget while he continues to look at you.
“Kookie-ah! You know there are more subtle ways to check out a girl.” Jimin emerges from the waves clutching the now soaked football in his arms.
“Hyung! I thought I told you to shut up! Like I said, ignore him.” He laughs nervously and ruffles his hair.
“I-it’s fine.”
“Really, though. I want to make it up to you. Not just for bumping into you but also for that idiot,” Jungkook says while gesturing to Jimin. You nod, half listening while you scanned the beach for any sign of your sunglasses.
“Hey, are you really okay? You seem a bit distracted.” Jungkook’s smooth voice snaps your focus back to him.
“Oh yeah, I’m fine. It’s just, I lost my sunglasses when, you know.” You chuckle sheepishly at the memory of you two colliding.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry. I can buy you a new pair, I think I saw a stand selling some on the boardwalk,” Jungkook says hurriedly, a little flustered.
“No, no, it’s fine! They were pretty cheap anyway, I just feel bad for losing something.”
“Still, I want to make it up to you. There’s a bonfire tonight, you should come out. I mean, I guess Jimin will be there also, but I swear the rest of my friends aren’t as annoying.” He gestures wildly as he tries to convince you. “Actually, don’t quote me on that.”
You giggle as he trips over his words. “A bonfire, huh? Sounds fun.”
“Yeah, and it’ll be dark, so there’s no need for sunglasses,” Jungkook says. “B-besides, if you wore sunglasses, I wouldn’t be able to see your eyes.” The line would have been smooth if it weren’t for the way for the way his face reddened and how he stuttered out the slightly cheesy line. You don’t mind though, you find his slightly imperfect delivery endearing.
“So, I’ll see you tonight?” Jungkook looks to you expectantly, his doe eyes wide.
“Hmmm, I don’t know.” You tap a finger on you chin and pretend to deliberate, even though you decided to go the minute he asked you. You try to hold back a smirk when you see his slightly panicked expression. He’s so cute. “Will there be s'mores?”
You visibly see all his muscles relax. “O-of course!” His face breaks out into a grin that sends something fluttering in your stomach. “That’s a yes, then?”
“I’ll see you tonight, Jungkook.” You give him a small smile and look up at him through your eyelashes.
“Jungkookie! We’re going soon!” Jimin calls over from under an umbrella where he is standing with a group of boys.
“I’ll be right there, hyung!” Jungkook replies to Jimin then turns back to you. “So, tonight?”
“Tonight.”
“Great. Great!” He shoots you one last heart wrenching smile before running off to join his friends. You would have taken this time to appreciate the view you have of his back, but suddenly your friends surround you, asking questions.
“So Y/N, what was all that about?” One friend asks you while raising her eyebrows suggestively. You roll your eyes but smile slightly to yourself.
“How do you guys feel about going to a bonfire tonight?”
