Work Text:

"Amanda, what are you talking about?" Lee eyed her with a hint of a frown. "How about an explanation." Amanda smiled cunningly, and replied, "Come on Lee, give me at least one guess."

"I have no idea what you are talking about. I don't have a clue."

"I'll give you a hint Lee. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes Lee pushing a ..... carriage."

Lee was stunned and didn't immediately respond, but when Amanda's words finally sunk in, he thought, could the word be BABY? Then his eyes lit up. "Amanda! Are you pregnant?"

"It took you long enough to figure it out Lee."

"When did you find out? Have you been to the doctor? Are you feeling all right?"

"Whoa Lee, I guess I'm not the only one who talks in paragraph sentences."

"Oh Amanda, that's wonderful, but what a surprise. How long have you known?"

"Well, I've been having those familiar symptoms for awhile, and I'm reasonably sure......"

Lee put his arms around Amanda and held her close. "I don't know what to say. I have all sorts of thoughts running through my mind. I like the idea, but I don't know if I.........."

Amanda covered his lips with her hand and responded, "You're already a fine father to Philip and Jamie. You're a natural."

"But a baby! They're so tiny."

Amanda took hold of his arm and looked into his eyes, "Lee, having your child is the most wonderful thing I can think of happening to me, and I want you to feel the same way."

"Oh I do!" After a pause, Lee stated, "Amanda, I want you to make a doctor's appointment tomorrow, okay?"

"I will Lee. You know we have several months to get used to the idea of being new parents."

"You're right. But, I don't think I will get used to the idea until it really happens. It's late already, don't you think we should get to bed?

Yesterday was a big day for you."

"Yes, I am tired, but it was fun finally having our marriage announcement party."

"Maybe I can get the boys to help clean up in the morning. You did most of the preparation for the party, so let us be responsible for the cleanup."

"Sounds good to me."

Lee woke up, made coffee and walked to the mailbox for the daily newspaper. He had been careful not to disturb Amanda, though he thought it odd she hadn't awakened when he got up, as she was a light sleeper.

Lee surmised he would need to call the boys in an hour or so to help with the cleanup. They hadn't gone to bed until late, but he wanted to finish and go to the Agency yet this morning.

To Lee's surprise, he heard the boys in the barn talking. "What are you guys doing? I didn't expect you to be out of bed yet."

"We're just exploring," answered Philip.

"It will be good when we get some animals Lee. Do you think I could havea pet, like a puppy?"

"I don't see why not. Just give us time to decide what we really want.

We don't want to rush into something we might regret later. Some dogs are more easily trained than others you know, and that will be your job when we get one."

Lee continued, "As long as you are up, will you help me pick up the stuff left on the lawn from the party? "

"Sure Lee, we already ate breakfast," replied Philip. "Come on Jamie!"

"I'm coming."

Lee and the boys came in from outdoors and Lee went to check on Amanda.

"Hi Amanda, how do you feel this morning?"

"Oh Lee, not so good. I think I'll stay in bed for awhile longer. My legs are aching and I'm sort of light headed this morning."

"I was afraid of this. You overworked getting ready for that party. You've got to take care of yourself. The boys got their own breakfast and helped me outside, so stay in bed. If I call to make an appointment with the doctor, will you feel like going today?"

"I suppose, but I won't get in today. They are too busy at that clinic."

"I'll call and make an appointment for you right now."

"All right Lee.."

Amanda was right, there was no way she could get an appointment until Wednesday of next week.

"Before I go to the Agency Amanda why don't I bring you something to eat?"

"Please don't mention food Lee. Maybe if you don't mind, make me a cup of tea."

"All right Amanda. I'll make some toast too."

Lee brought Amanda her breakfast in a short while. "Breakfast for the queen of the Stetson household," announced Lee. "Is it normal for expectant mothers to be ill Amanda?"

Lee felt really stupid. It was his doing that Amanda was pregnant, but he'd never been closely associated with a pregnant lady, and he didn't quite know how he should handle the good news. He was happy and proud, but Amanda didn't feel well. How could he express his happiness in a big way when she didn't feel good.

Amanda sensed Lee's feelings with the troubled look on his face when she asked, "Lee, is something bothering you about this pregnancy?"

"Amanda, I'm so happy and proud to think of becoming a father..., but you are ill."

Amanda laughed at him and took his hands and pulled him down on his knees beside her bed, "I'm not ill Lee. Haven't you heard about morning sickness that pregnant ladies have in the first few weeks of pregnancy?

I'm almost through that stage already I think. Really, it hasn't been that bad. I'm just overly tired today, so thought I'd sleep in this morning."

"Are you sure?"

"I'm positive, now please don't worry about it."

"That makes me feel much better." Lee leaned over Amanda and kissed her tenderly and whispered, "I love you Amanda, and I'm very concerned about you.....and the baby."

"We're fine. Everything feels as it did when I carried both Philip and Jamie, now don't worry."

"Well, okay." After a slight pause, Lee said, "Well I suppose..."

"Yes, you had better leave for work, and DON'T worry about me."

"Good morning Mrs. Marsten," said Lee cheerfully.

"Good morning to you too Lee. I want to thank you for inviting me to your party last night. I had a good time."

"Well, thank you. I'm glad you came."

Everyone who came into contact with Lee had a big smile for him and a Hi or Good Morning greeting.

"That was a nice party Lee," offered Francine. "I hope to soon have a real home like yours."

"It's great, and beats the hell out of the way I used to live."

Mr. Melrose came out of his office to greet Lee, and asked, "How is Amanda this morning? I thought she looked tired before everyone left last night."

"Well, to tell the truth, Amanda stayed in bed this morning. She's not feeling well."

"That's too bad. I think everyone had a good time. It was great playing the old sax with my buddies. They enjoyed themselves too."

"We appreciated having music. It always adds something to a party."

"So, I have about everything cleaned up on my desk. Do you having something special for me to work on today?"

"There's nothing important right now. I guess this is a chance for you to work on those dull jobs you like so well. Or, say, you probably still have some cleanup to do from your party. Why don't you go on home, tend to that, and see how Amanda is feeling."

"I was just ready to ask. I'm off. See you later."

Lee arrived home around noon to find Amanda in the kitchen. "Hi Amanda, how do you feel?"

"Not so good, but I wanted to tell the boys about the leftovers they could have for lunch. They must be outdoors."

"Don't worry about the boys. They won't go hungry. If you don't feel well, you should be in bed don't you think?"

"Lee, this is not an illness, and I can't treat it like one.

Did you come home for lunch?"

"No, well yes, I'm home for the remainder of the day. Billy thought I probably still had some clean up work after the party, and there was nothing pressing there."

"I'm starting to feel better now. Do you want some leftovers for lunch?"

"That barbecued pork was delicious. Yes, I'll have a sandwich. You know it was really nice of Jerry to offer to bring that machine over here and spend the whole day cooking. And it saved a caterer's expense too. Jerry's a good friend."

Jamie and Philip joined them for lunch. They insisted Amanda sit down while they put the dishes in the dishwasher.

"You fella's are making me feel like an invalid. I'm feeling good now.

I was just tired from the extra work yesterday."

"Do you want to take a ride this afternoon? Boys, how about you?"

The boys' eyes lit up.

Amanda replied, "I think that is a 'yes' Lee. Let's all go. Do you have a special place in mind?"

"I heard about a fellow who raises horses, quarter horses I think. Thought we might see what he has."

"That's great," replied Philip.

"Lee, how is a quarter horse different from others?" asked Jamie.

"Well, for one thing, a quarter horse is muscular and capable of high speed for short distances, making them different from a race horse, which is leaner and kept only for racing, and the Clydesdales, those big gentle horses that pull the Budweiser beer wagon. You've seen them on TV, and I've seen them in St. Louis, MO, where they live."

They arrived at the horse farm and looked over the stock advertised. Others were in a nearby pasture, several with foals.

"I think we'll come back in a few weeks and see what those young ones look like. It's hard to tell when they are so small."

"They are so beautiful Lee, aren't they?" cited Amanda.

"Yes they are. I can't wait until we have some livestock around our home."

The Stetson family returned to their home and spent the remainder of the afternoon putting finishing touches on cleanup from the party, and Lee batted some baseball grounders to the boys, while Amanda watched.

Amanda had seen the doctor, who confirmed she was pregnant. He gave her a prescription for multi-vitamins and asked her to return for her monthly checkups. She was still feeling nauseous until about noon each day, but tried to ignore the feeling. She always tried to eat something, 'cause she would feel better afterwards... if she could get it down.

"It's just you and me for dinner tonight Lee. The boys have gone to an early baseball game with friends."

Lee smiled and replied, "Good." After a slight pause Lee whispered softly, "So we're alone tonight huh?" Lee revealed a big smile and sounded an animal growl.

Amanda smiled back, and was thrilled once again with her husband. From the day they'd met she had always felt an inner excitement when Lee was around. She knew it would always be like this.

Lee poured himself a goblet of wine before their late dinner while Amanda enjoyed her goblet of skim milk. Lee was grilling one of their favorites, beef tenderloin steak and baked potatoes. The salad from last night would have to do for one more meal, then Amanda decided they'd better toss what was left. Lee insisted Amanda stay sitting while he loaded the dishwasher and put things away after their meal. Soon after, Lee took Amanda's hand and led her upstairs.

Amanda wanted to put Lee's mind at ease about the pregnancy, so she decided maybe he'd be a little cheerier if she wore her teddy to bed. She had had that garment for years it seemed, and hadn't worn it very often, but this seemed a good time. When she came out of the bathroom,

Lee looked up with a questioning look on his face, but it soon turned into a big smile. "Come here Mrs. Stetson."

He took Amanda in his arms and kissed and embraced her for a time before he carried her to their bed. "You know that's a nice outfit, but it has to come off. And you know what else? You don't need a sexy garment to make me want you lady."

Their love making was fulfilling as usual, and Amanda cuddled up beside Lee as he watched the late news before falling asleep.

Both Lee and Amanda were up bright and early the next morning after greeting each other with hugs and kisses. Amanda had begun to feel better as morning sickness had just about left her.

"I feel pretty good this morning Lee. I think I'll go to work with you."

"I'd rather you didn't, but I suppose it won't hurt for you to work in the office."

"The boys are still sleeping. I'll call them from the office later."

Lee and Amanda entered the office and exchanged greetings with the office staff.

Amanda noticed that Francine was not in yet, but since they were early for work, she paid no attention until around 10:00 am, when she met Billy outside his office and asked, "Have you heard anything from Francine Mr. Melrose?"

"No I haven't. It's unlike her not to call if she has an appointment or some personal business to tend to."

"I'll call her home and see if she is all right."

"Yes, why don't you do that Amanda."

The call to Francine's apartment was not answered. Amanda had returned to the Q-bureau and made the call to Francine from there. "Lee, what do you think? Francine hasn't called Billy that she would not be in this morning, and she did not answer the call I just made to her place. Do you think we should be concerned?"

"I don't know, why don't you try again in an hour or so."

Amanda got the same results phoning Francine's apartment an hour later.

"There's no answer Lee. I left a message."

"Well, I suppose I'd better go check her apartment."

"I'll go with you."

"Amanda, weren't you going to stay in the office today?"

"That's what you said, but I didn't agree. Let me go along. Maybe I'll notice something that you miss."

"Why do you always manage to get your way?"

"I didn't think I did."

"Lady, you have me twisted around your little finger, do you know that?"

Lee shook his head and eyed Amanda out of the corner of his eye, frowning and trying to look mean.

"Come on Lee, I'm anxious to know about Francine, aren't you?"

A knock on Francine's door was not answered, so Lee opened the door with his special talented use of the Agency tool.

Francine's apartment had been torn apart, evidently someone had been searching for something.

"I wonder if they found what they were looking for?" asked Lee.

"Lee, there is a safe over there. I don't think its been opened."

"No, it hasn't. I wonder if I should have a look inside? Of course I will."

Amanda came out of the bedroom noting that Francine was sharing her apartment with a man, probably Jonathan.

"Lee, is Jonathan living here with Francine? There are too many men's clothes in her closet for just an over-night or weekend stay."

"Yeah, I think he moved in with her. They are trying to buy a condo I think, and he moved in with her to save paying rent on another apartment."

Lee opened the safe after several tries. "What does Jonathan do? Doesn't he own a furnace and air conditioning company?"

Lee studied the material he found in the safe and noted, "This looks like plans for installation of a heating system. It seems to me I remember Francine saying he was trying to get a patent on it. Evidently this is his own invention."

"Do you suppose someone was trying to steal the plans Lee?"

"I don't know. Why don't you see if you can find Jonathan's phone number and give his office a call. He's probably not in though at this time of day."

"Okay, I'll look around."

"Here's a match book. Neither Francine nor Jonathan smoke do they?"

"I wouldn't know, but I don't think Francine does. Maybe an address on that will provide a clue."

Amanda also found two phone numbers near the phone. She called the first one and received a response from one of the office staff.

"Could I speak to Jonathan please?"

"I'm sorry, he is not in today," was the reply.

"Oh, is he working on a job?"

"No, he didn't check into the office, and he always does that first thing in the morning."

"Then you haven't heard from him today?"

"No."

"What about yesterday?"

"He left early yesterday, but he was in."

"All right. Thank you."

Amanda's try to the second phone number was not answered.

The address on the match book was that of Mitch's Bar.

"I think I'll check out that bar. Do you want to go back to the office Amanda?"

"No, I don't mind going to those places when I'm with you, but I don't like it when you go off to speak to someone else and leave me alone feeling like someone waiting to be picked up."

"Aw, it hasn't been that bad has it?"

"Yes it has, at least a couple times that I can think of."

"Well, we'll stay together. Just keep your eyes and ears open. If the person who left this in Francine's apartment is a regular visitor, maybe we can spot him....or her."

Unbeknown to Lee and Amanda, both Francine and Jonathan were in the basement of Mitch's bar being threatened by a couple guys. They were both tied with their hands behind their backs to chairs.

"Since you refused to open or tell us the combination of the safe in your apartment, we decided to bring your girl friend here. Maybe if Francine and I get intimate you'll change your mind Jonathan," stated the big fellow.

"I'm not afraid of you goons. Don't tell them anything Jonathan!" shouted Francine.

The big fellow slapped her on either side of her face, leaving his filthy fingerprints on her skin. She cringed, but kept that determined look on her face.

"Leave her alone," yelled Jonathan.

"Shut your mouth stupid!"

Jonathan was so angry and tried desperately to free his arms.

"You're not going to get loose until you tell us what we want to know. We have lots of time you know."

The short, bald, obese fellow tried to fondle Francine's breasts and she bit him.

"You'll be sorry you did that honey. Let's see, there is a zipper on your blouse. Let's see if it works shall we?"

"Keep your hands off me you bastard!"

The short guy grabbed her by the hair with one hand and pulled down the zipper on her blouse with the other hand to reveal her bra. As he attempted to touch her breast, she kicked him in the shin.

He became very angry and hit her on her left shoulder, knocking her to the floor. When Francine got her wits together after falling on the floor, she realized that one of her hands was loose in the binding. However, she kept it in the original position so the goons would not know she could free a hand.

"Come on, let's go upstairs and get a drink Jeff. We'll leave them here to sweat awhile."

"Good idea. Let's go," replied Bob, the other goon.

Amanda and Lee noticed that a couple new people had joined the small group of people assembled at the bar.

"Lee, those two fellows just came upstairs. They didn't come from outside."

"Let's go outside and see if there are windows to the basement. Maybe we can make a visit here tonight and find out what's in the basement. I don't want to draw attention to us now."

Amanda and Lee found two windows on two sides of the bar basement. Lee noticed a back door and said, "I'll see if this door is locked as long as there is no one around right now."

"Lee, look at this, it looks like Francine's compact. Do you suppose she dropped this here on purpose?"

"I don't know, but if that's hers, you can bet she is down in that basement. What do you think, should we call for back up and go in, or?"

"Yes, let's do that."

"Ah, er, Amanda...why don't you go back near the car. I almost forgot about your condition. I do not want you in danger."

"Come on Lee. Listen, I don't want you to be hurt either. I want this baby to have a father."

"Oh Amanda! Please! Why can't you do as you're told?! Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean that."

Lee was truly sorry for that comment. He admired her talents and she often had better instincts about situations than he did. He disliked the way he became enraged, and/or excited occasionally, then sounded off, especially to Amanda.

Amanda was accustomed to Lee's short temper, and this time, as in the past, his words did not affect her. She knew he wasn't serious. And, he always felt bad aferwards and often said really nice things to her.

"Come on, but please keep your eyes open."

Francine had gotten her hands loosened and released Jonathan's when the two goons returned. They ran toward the back door when Francine was shot in one of her legs. She went down, and Jonathan fell on his knees to examine her wound and comfort her.

"Lee, didn't that sound like a shot?"

"Yes, it did. You stay here, I'm going to go in there," stated Lee.

"You dummy, why did you shoot her Jeff?"

"Well, they were going to get away. How else could I stop them? It's a good thing I came back to check the ropes on their hands or they would have escaped."

"Remember, we were going to just steal some plans and go in business for ourselves, not kill somebody."

"I didn't kill her, just slowed her up. They won't get away now, and I know John Boy will give us the combination now, or we'll go blow up the safe."

"Let's get out of here now in case someone heard that shot. I'm thirsty anyway. I'm gonna' tighten the rope on this guy's hands again and go have a drink before we leave. Blondie isn't going anywhere."

"Well, I'm not thirsty, I'm going to the car," replied Bob.

"Someone is on the stairs Lee. I think they are coming outside."

Lee nodded his head, took Amanda's hand and pulled her behind a bush near the doorway.

When Bob came outside, Lee attacked him with a left uppercut and he fell to the ground. He pulled him to one side of the building so Jeff would not see him if he was following.

Amanda and Lee waited quietly for Jeff to come up the stairs. He didn't show.

"Now what do we do Lee?"

"I think I'll call for back up to take away this guy. He's not going any place for awhile. I think I'll sneak inside. Maybe the other guy is up stairs in the bar. Amanda, why don't you go to the car and call for back up while I have a look inside. Tell them to keep the sirens turned off and enter quietly. Francine and Jonathan are probably in there, and that shot--we don't know--one of them might be hurt."

"All right Lee. Be careful."

"Always."

Lee entered the basement to find Francine with a bleeding wound in her left leg. Jonathan had wrapped the wound with his white handkerchief to help stop the flow of blood, but it was still bleeding.

"Francine, how bad is it?" asked Lee.

"Well, I've lost lots of blood I know that."

"I can see that. We need to get you to a hospital. Can you drive her Jonathan or should we call an ambulance?"

"No, don't call an ambulance," shouted Francine. "I don't want those two guys spooked with an ambulance showing up."

"I think I can drive. I can't believe those fellows. They've been working for me for some time and I thought they were decent men."

"One of those thugs is lying outside on the ground Francine. I met him as he came out the door, and he got a surprise blow to the jaw. Amanda is calling for back up to haul him away."

"Well, the other one is some place, probably up in the bar. He's the one with the gun, so watch yourself."

"I'll help you get to the car Francine, just lean on me," stated Jonathan. "I'm so sorry about this. I had no idea..."

"Of course you didn't," replied Francine. "It's not your fault. Besides, I'll be okay, especially if Lee finds the other thug in the building. I'd like to scratch his eyes out and give him a forceful knee lift!......Well, maybe not right now."

Jonathan caught Francine as she fainted. Lee hurried to her side to help Jonathan get her to the car.

"Do you think she'll be all right Lee?" asked Jonathan.

"Yes, I think so, just get her to an emergency room, and here, give the person in charge in ER this card. She will get immediate medical attention. Now go, hurry up."

Lee was aware that Jonathan had never been in this type of situation before. He was a little disgusted with him, but managed to hold his tongue. He wasn't sure they shouldn't have called an ambulance, but, as Francine noted, it would have spooked the thugs.

Amanda saw Jonathan struggling to get Francine in the car and got out of Lee's car to help. "Let me help Jonathan. I'll get the first aid kit out of Lee's car. Are you taking her to a hospital? Why don't you let me drive, then you can hold her."

"I'd sure appreciate the help Amanda," replied Jonathan.

Amanda treated the wound the best she could while in a hurry.

About this time, the cops showed up and Amanda left word with them to tell Lee she was going with Francine and Jonathan to the hospital.

"Come on Jonathan, put her in the back and get in beside her. Hurry."

"I'm sorry Amanda, I'm not very good in situations like this."

"I think Francine is coming around. I'm not going to lose any time getting to the hospital, so hold her so she doesn't fall over."

"All right. Francine, can you hear me?" asked Jonathan.

"Yes, I hear you but I really feel funny. Who is driving the car?"

"Amanda happened along and volunteered to drive us to the hospital."

"Lee sent me to his car Francine, and when I saw you were hurt, I thought I would help."

"Oh, thanks. I hope Lee gets that goon back at the bar."

"I hope so too."

After Lee saw the cops handcuff and put Bob in the police car, he left a cop at the back door and he went in the front door of the bar. He spotted the fellow who had come up the stairs with Bob. He was enjoying his drink at the bar.

After a couple drinks, Jeff went toward the door to the basement. Lee followed at a distance, and when Jeff got to the basement and found no one, he said, "What in the hell is going on here?" He took out his weapon and started shooting. He did not see anyone, he was just half ntoxicated and very angry and was just shooting at random, knocking things off tables and breaking windows. He turned around and saw Lee and fired. Lee returned the fire and dropped Jeff in his tracks.

However, Jeff had shot Lee in the shoulder. The policeman, Gary, came in the back door, assured that Jeff was dead, then went to Lee's side.

He ran to his car and called for an ambulance, picked up a first aid kit and returned to Lee, where he put a pack on Lee's shoulder to help stop the flow of blood.

"The ambulance will soon be here Lee, just take it easy," said Gary, the policeman, who just happened to be a friend of Lee's.

"Gary, will you get Amanda from that Corvette out in the parking lot?"

"Yeah, sure."

"Lee, there is no one in your car," stated Gary.

"What?! Well, look around, she has to be out there. She is the one who called for back up."

"Oh, you know that woman that was wounded, well, Amanda told us to tell you she was driving her to the hospital."

"Well, I suppose I'll see her at the hospital. Could one of you guys drive my car back to the Agency?"

"Yeah, sure. Here is the ambulance."

"You know, I didn't really need an ambulance."

"Well, you couldn't drive. You'd mess up that nice car."

"Yeah, that's right. Well, I guess I'll find Amanda at the hospital then right?"

"Well, that's where she went with those other two. We'll take care of this body too."

"Okay, good."

Amanda was still in the ER with Francine when the ambulance brought Lee in. As the two ambulance staff brought Lee in on the stretcher, he had lost lots of blood and was receiving a blood transfusion. He was very near the edge of passing out, but he said Amanda's name several times before Amanda, in the next room heard him. She rushed to his side.

"Oh, Lee, what happened?"

The sound of Amanda's voice revived Lee. She was crying, touching his face with her soft, small hands that he loved.

"Amanda, it's not bad, really. It's just a shoulder wound. I lost quite a bit of blood, but I'm all right. Are you all right? Now, I don't want you to be upset. You can't get upset Amanda. The baby!"

Amanda felt a little better, but that shock was quite a jolt.

She ordered herself to stay calm. Lee was all right, and he was concerned about our baby. What a guy! Lying on a stretcher receiving a blood transfusion and worrying about me and the baby. How did she ever survive without this wonderful man. She thought she would be okay now knowing that Lee wasn't hurt seriously.

Lee was moved to a room, where he spent three days before the doctor would release him. He insisted that Amanda not run to the hospital every day, but stay at home and take care of herself. He persuaded her to just call whenever she wanted to talk to him.

Amanda went home, trying to get hold of her nerves. The boys got their own dinner and she went to lie down. She awoke with cramps about 4:00 am. Oh no, she thought, this can't be happening. She told herself that Lee was all right. There was nothing to worry about.

At 6:00 am she could stand it no longer and called Lee at the hospital.

"Hello, Stetson."

"Hi Lee. I hope I didn't awaken you. How are your feeling? I've been worried about you."

"I'm fine. That blood transfusion gave me lots of zip. I'm ready to get out of here. How about you?"

"Well, I'm okay too I guess."

"You guess?"

"I'm a little shaky and think I'll stay down today if you are sure everything's okay with you."

"That's a good idea. No need for you to come here. Just take it easy. I'll try and find out how Francine is doing and give you a call."

"Oh good. I'll be waiting for your call."

"Bye Lee."

"Goodbye Mrs. Stetson. I love you."

Lee didn't really feel as good as he indicated to Amanda, but he did not want her to worry so he stretched the truth a bit.

Billy came in to see Lee later that morning after visiting with Francine.

"Hello Lee. How are you doing?"

"I'm still pretty weak, but the blood transfusion helped a lot. Did you get that goon put away? I must be slipping to let myself get shot like this. That guy I shot had a weapon in his hand, and I saw it. Don't know why I let him shoot first. I think I'm pretty lucky."

"Yes, I guess you are lucky this time. Everything has been taken care of and there will be no investigation. There's no question but that you shot in self defense, so don't worry about that. The surviving man said they were trying to steal an invention from Jonathan and get a patent on it before he got around to doing it. That's small stuff to be carrying weapons and kidnapping people over, don't you think?"

"Yeah, there can't be enough money involved to warrant their actions."

"I sort of think the fellow you killed was the brains of the outfit, and he wasn't very smart. Well, anyway, it's all over now. I hope Jonathan sees about getting that patent soon so he doesn't have any more trouble over it."

"Well, we were just talking about you Jonathan," said Billy, as Jonathan entered Lee's room.

"Hello fellows, I just wanted to stop by Lee to thank you very much for your part in saving the day for Francine and me. I really feel badly that you were hurt."

"I'll be all right soon. I think the first thing you ought to do when you have time is apply for that patent."

"Yes, the first thing tomorrow morning. I think the reason those two former employees wanted to steal the plans for my invention was that I've been contacted by a land developer who is planning to build over 150 homes, and he wants to place heating systems in the homes using my plans. There will be quite a lot of money involved in this transaction."

"That's good Jonathan. By the way, can you explain to me in a few words how the operation works? I might be interested in replacing my furnace."

"Well, it would be rather costly to start from scratch in a standing home. Pipe is laid around the house below the frost line with water running through it. Water can either be heated or cooled at a much lower cost than the normal way. The bottom line is that it's cheaper to heat or cool your house with my invention."

"That sounds very interesting to me. I think I'll look into that when I need to make some changes," replied Billy.

"I'll be glad to talk to you about it when you are ready. I think right now I'd better get back to Francine's room. She was released and is anxious to get home. Thanks again Lee."

"That's okay. Tell Francine hi for me."

"I surely will."

Lee was released from the hospital after his three day stay. He was told that there might be some permanent damage to his shoulder. This did not set very good with him, and Amanda sensed his feelings when he called her that he was released.

Amanda had stayed down for most of the three days Lee wasn't there, and everything seemed back to normal. Thank God, thought Amanda, I think my prayers have been answered. Now, I wonder what Lee is worried about, guess I'll soon find out.

Philip drove, and with Amanda and Jamie, went to pick up Lee.

Lee was dressed and waiting for his family. He greeted the boys with a hug and kissed Amanda. "Gee I'm glad to see my family. Let's get out of here now."

"We sure missed you Lee," said Philip.

"Yeah, but we took good care of mom when she didn't feel good," added Jamie.

"What do you mean, didn't feel good? You didn't mention anything when he talked on the phone several times a day. Are you keeping something from me Amanda?"

"No, ah ... well, the shock of you being hurt really upset me."

Amanda gave him a 'tell you later' look, so he decided to drop the subject. She had told the boys about the pregnancy but didn't want to go into the problem she'd recently experienced in front of them.

"Well, I'm nearly all right now."

"You know, as long as I'll have some time off from work now, I think this would be a good time to go back to that horse ranch and have anotherlook at those foals."

"Great!" replied the boys, nearly at the same time.

The routine of dinner and dishes was over. The boys were outdoors, so Lee approached Amanda.

"Now, Amanda, do you have something to share with me?"

"Yes, well, as a result of the shock of learning you had been injured,

I was very upset and began having cramps in the middle of the night.

That was when I called you early in the morning. I guess it was about two hours before I called you. I needed to know that you were all right so I could relax."

"So, is everything okay now?"

"Yes, I think so. As you know, I stayed here at home for the three days you were in the hospital, and most of the time I spent in bed. I was afraid the cramps would turn into something else, but they've gone away now, so I don't think there is anything to worry about."

"How about you? They don't know yet whether you have a permanent injury, is that right?

"Yeah, I guess so. What will I do if I do? Take a desk job I suppose. You know I don't think I'd mind that though if I could raise horses here. I'd have something else to think about. It would be like two jobs. There would be no more reason for you to have those shocks either Amanda if I took a desk job. I'd do most anything to keep you and the baby healthy."

"I don't know. I want a happy husband. I do like the sound of you not being in danger though."

"Well, I guess we won't know for a week or so when I go back for more xrays."

The week passed with Lee and Amanda nearly side by side at all times.

Amanda went with Lee for xrays. Their suspicions were true. Lee would no longer be efficient as an armed agent. Both he and Amanda accepted the information without much discussion. Both were quiet on the road home.

At dinner that evening Lee told the boys that he had a permanent injury and would probably be working at a desk at the Agency now.

"Gee, we're sorry about that Lee. You won't like the desk I'll bet, but it will be safer won't it?" asked Jamie.

"Well, I was thinking that we ought to look at those foals again this weekend. You know fellows, with the insurance settlement for this injury, maybe we can get one for each of us, we might even start raising our own stock."

"Lee, that would be great!" responded Philip.

"Do you really think so Lee?" asked Amanda.

"Well, I don't know. I guess I'm just sharing my thoughts with you. Life is going to be much different for me I know that. It will be difficult to adjust, but with my supportive family, I'm not worried about it."

Amanda and Lee exchanged glances and she moved closer to him and put her hand on his shoulder. He still favored his left shoulder and steered the car with his right hand. No words were needed to communicate their feelings toward each other. Amanda was feeling good these days and had gained 20 lbs. with two months yet before the baby was due. She had had no health problems since the shock of Lee being shot. Both Lee and the boys were very supportive of her condition and helped her faithfully with housework.

Lee and the boys found the colts they liked at the horse ranch.

The owner agreed to inform Lee when he had the colts trained for riding.

The insurance settlement, Lee thought, would be sufficient enough to enable the Stetson family to build a stable, purchase saddles and othernecessary equipment, a pickup truck and horse trailer. Lee hadn't purchased this equipment, but had speculated on what would be needed with the help of the boys. He wasn't taking any big steps until after the baby was born. He knew there would be expenses, but he had no idea of what they might be.

Lee's work at the Agency had been mostly routine stuff until today when Dr. Smyth approached him with a request for him to visit an old girl friend who was popular with the society set in D.C.

Dr. Smyth asked, "Lee, I seem to remember when this Ellen Dorsey and you were an item. Seems to me you were pictured on the society pages with this lady more than once. You do remember don't you? It wasn't that long ago."

"Yes, I remember her, but I'm not in her league any more and I have a different life style."

"Now Lee, this is work. I'm not trying to get you personally involved with her."

"What kind of information are you after?"

"She is a good friend of a Senator Byrd. I've heard some rumors about him."

"He and Ellen's cousin are said to have control of some raw material used to make a drug used by many people for high blood pressure. People are complaining about the rise in cost, and we're thinking they are charging outrageous prices to the drug manufacturers, who in turn, are raising the cost to consumers. I'm not so sure she is not involved too. I thought maybe since you two were great friends at one time, you could visit her, turn on the charm and come up with some answers."

"Are you serious? That could take a while even if she will still talk to me. I haven't been around where she hangs out for a long, long time."

"Well, polish your shoes, put on some of that good smellin' stuff and look her up."

"Thanks a lot!" said Lee sarcastically.

"Oh, I had this ID card made to allow you entrance to the 'Elite' club. Yours is probably outdated. It seems Ellen spends lots of time there. You might make that your first visit. Now, don't disappoint me Lee."

Dr. Smyth blew a puff of cigar smoke and left the room with a sarcastic smile.

Lee left the office at the end of the day wondering how he was going to explain his next assignment to Amanda.

Amanda met Lee at the door with a big smile and kiss on the cheek. "Hi Lee."

"Hi Amanda," responded Lee. "What a nice greeting." He took her in his arms and kissed her tenderly.

"Gosh, the baby was really lively today. I wonder if I'll go two more months. He or she is really an active one. Will you be able to go to the doctor with me tomorrow evening? I made the appointment in the evening so you wouldn't miss work."

"Sure Amanda, I'll go with you. I may have to work on a job later tomorrow night for Dr. Smyth if I don't complete it tonight. I do not want this kind of duty, but he informed me it was my job, so...I don't know if you remember Ellen Dorsey, who was always in the society pages."

"Oh, yes, I remember her very well. That's when you and I were working together, and before we were dating. What do you need to get from her?"

"It's a long story, but basically, Dr. Smyth wants some sort of assurance that a rumor he's heard about a senator and one of Ellen's cousins is true."

Amanda was digested what Lee told her but did not add words. Lee knew she did not like the idea, but would never complain to him. She remained quiet thinking negative thoughts.

"Remember, once I began dating you, there was no one else Amanda."

"I know Lee. I trust you." Then in a lower tone, she continued, "I'm not sure I trust her."

"Now I don't want you worrying about this."

"I don't suppose there is anyway I can help--no not on this kind of assignment."

"I'm going to visit some of the places she used to hang out and..."

"Maybe I'll wait up for you Lee. I'll be interested in hearing all the sordid details of your visit." Amanda gave him a smiling side glance and lifted an eyebrow.

"Amanda, I don't want to do this. I was ordered."

"I didn't say anything Lee. I understand. You have to do your job."

Lee took her in his arms and explained, "Amanda, I love you more than anything or anyone I've ever known, and I would never do anything to ruin our marriage."

"I know Lee, and I'm sorry if I act jealous. I'm sorry, I can't help it. Don't pay any attention to me when I act that way."

"I'm going to leave later tonight and visit the Elite club first. Dr. Smyth says Ellen spends lots of time there rubbing elbows with senators and other DC officials."

"I'll finish this assignment as soon as possible Amanda. I don't know what time I'll be home."

"Well, do a good job Lee, and be careful."

"No fireworks involved with this job, remember?"

"Hmmm...oh, are you sure? Just teasing Lee. I couldn't pass that up," laughed Amanda.

"Oh you...come here." In Amanda's condition, it was difficult to hold her close, but Amanda was very pleased with her husband's attempt to hold her for several minutes while kissing her on the lips, neck and behind her ears. That old feeling of excitement nearly set her on fire as she moved closer to him. Even at seven months into her pregnancy, she was thrilled by her husband's touch.

Lee left the house after the boys and Amanda went to bed. Amanda had mixed emotions about his leaving. She vowed not to be a whiny wife. She trusted Lee, but knew she wouldn't sleep tonight.

Lee dressed and left for the Elite club around 10:00 pm. This social bunch didn't get aroused until around midnight. He remembered those days. He entered, showed his ID, then sat on a bar stool and ordered a mug of imported beer. The bartenders all seemed to be new to him, and he did not recognize anyone else in the place. There were small groups sitting here and there, all deep in conversation.

Lee looked up to see Ellen coming towards him.

"Lee, I thought that was you. It's so good to have you back, or is this only a one time visit? No, don't tell me. I want to believe I have you back."

"How have you been Ellen?"

"Damn lonesome since you decided to live like a hermit. Where have you been?"

"Working most of the time. In fact I was working in this vicinity and thought I'd stop in for a drink before going home."

"Well, I don't care what or where you've been. You are back. That's all I care about. Come on over to our table Lee."

With Ellen's hold on his arm, Lee could not refuse. She had his left arm too, and it was still tender. She led him to her table of friends and introduced him. Senator Byrd was introduced, as well as a man Jon, who she introduced as her cousin.

Lee thought, well maybe this won't take as long as I thought. The players Dr. Smyth has questions about are right here under my nose.

"It's good to see you again Lee," said the Senator.

"Nice to meet everyone. So, Senator, what's new at the White House? Anything exciting going on?"

Ellen interrupted and responded, "Oh, lots of things. Why don't you give me a ride home and I'll clue you in."

"The night is young for you isn't it?"

"Yes, but I want to talk to you, do you mind?"

"Well, I guess not, how did you get here?"

"I had a limo deliver me. I never drive here because you never can tell who I might meet ... like tonight, for instance. I wouldn't want to miss a chance to spend some time with you again Lee. Remember some of the good times we had? You are still the best lover I ever had."

"Ah, Ellen, I only stopped at the club tonight because I was working in the area. Don't expect me to go back to my old habits. My life style has changed."

"Yes, I hear you ran out on me and got married. But you are back. Growing weary of the apron strings already?"

Lee finished his drink and decided it was time for him to leave. "See you all later. I have to work tomorrow, so I'd better get going."

"Don't be a stranger Lee. We enjoyed having you join us," remarked the Senator.

Lee didn't like this situation but if he wanted information from Ellen, he had to play the game.

"So Lee, where are you living now, in the suburbs?"

"No, we have a few acres out in the country."

"You and the Mrs.?"

"There are four of us, Amanda and her two sons."

"I seem to remember her. I have yet to figure out what she had to offer that I didn't."

"Amanda is a very special person, unlike any woman I've ever met."

"Well, it's good to be with you Lee, if only for tonight. Let's go to my house and I'll fix us something to drink."

"You said you'd tell me what was new around the White House, remember?"

"Well, the press has their nose up everyone's ass most of the time. If you read the papers or watched TV, you would know what's going on."

"You know what I mean. There is always news that's not published, and you are usually aware of it."

"Well, what do I get if I tell you?"

"What do you mean?"

"Oh, Lee, it hasn't been that long. You know me. What did we usually do for fun at my house?"

"Ah, Ellen, you're coming on a little strong aren't you?"

"I'm desperate. I've missed you so."

Oh boy, thought Lee, how am I going to get out of this without baring my buns. I didn't want to do it, but I'm going to lace her drink, and maybe she'll open up with the information I'm after. I know it's dangerous to come back here too many times.

They drove onto Ellen's driveway, got out of Lee's car and walked to the house. Lee remembered where the door was, and opened it for Ellen.

Ellen made drinks for both of them and left the room. If Lee remembered correctly, this was when she would change into something more comfortable.

This was his chance. It would take only a drop. When Ellen returned in her teddy, Lee had laced the drink and had a look of happiness on his face.

Of course, Ellen took that expression on his face to think he was pleased to be with her again.

Ellen sat down beside Lee on the couch. He had taken his coat and tie off, and pretended to be very interested in her. She began by kissing him passionately, them started to unbutton his shirt. She kissed his chest, then moved up to his mouth again for another kiss.

"Hey, come up for air, and finish your drink Ellen."

"Okay, hand it to me." She finished the drink in a couple gulps, then said, "Let's get back to this unfinished business."

She ran her fingers through his hair, and pretended to bite his ear.

Lee was getting a little tired of pretending to enjoy all this and he hadn't learned a thing yet.

"Hey, Ellen, I thought you were going to tell me the unpublished news."

"Well, okay, John Byrd (Senator) and Jon, my cousin, have a great money making scheme going. It has something to do with the making of orescription drugs. I'm thinking of joining them as a partner.

I'm not sure it's ... gosh, Lee, I'm sleepy all of a sudden. Will you take me to bed? And stay with me awhile?"

Of course I will honey, thought Lee. Ellen had passed out completely.

Lee placed her in her bed, went to the bathroom, put all his clothes back on, washed the makeup off his face and combed his hair. I'll never get her perfume off me. Amanda will smell that right away. Oh well, I was very lucky to get what I went after without committing adultery, so I'm happy about that.

It was 2:30 am when Lee finally got home. He took off his clothes and put on a robe, then made a few notes so he would not forget anything.

Then he went to the bedroom, took off the robe and climbed in bed up close to Amanda. He wanted to tell her the whole story right now.

"How'd it go Lee?" asked Amanda.

"I don't know why, but I sort of knew you would be awake Amanda. I got the information I need and won't need to go back. That woman tried to seduce me Amanda. I'm really glad I took those drops with me. I laced a drink for her, she told me what I wanted to know, and I was out of there. She will be mad as hell when she wakes up tomorrow and remembers what happened."

"Well, I'm glad you don't need to go back. By the way, I like the smell of her perfume. It must be expensive."

"Yeah, I guess so. Amanda, you're not angry with me are you?"

"No, Lee, and I won't ask you any more questions. I'm just glad to have you here in our bed. I realize you need to do things that you aren't crazy about doing to get the job done."

"I did not break my marriage vows Amanda."

"I know you didn't Lee. Don't ask me how I know, I just do. Let's forget the whole thing as long as you don't need to return."

Lee kissed Amanda and said, "I'm the luckiest guy alive Amanda. You are so trusting and understanding, I can't believe it."

"That's because I know you love me, and I love you very much."

"I feel so much better, and I think I'd refuse to go back if Dr. Smith demanded it. It's not fair for a married man to have to do that kind of work."

Lee fell asleep, but Amanda was uncomfortable and got up to get a glass of warm milk. She was having false labor pains, but didn't want to tell Lee.

Lee awoke early as usual, reached for Amanda, but she wasn't there. He always got up mornings before Amanda so he wondered what was wrong. He put on his robe, checked the bathroom, then went downstairs to find Amanda sitting at the kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee.

"Hi Lee."

"Amanda, what's wrong? You never get up before I do. Are you ill?"

"No, I'm okay now, but I was having some false labor pains I think."

"False? What does that mean?"

"It means it's not the real thing."

"How do you know it's not the real thing?"

"Because they stopped. If it was really labor, the pains would have increased, and come at intervals."

"Let's see you are due in less than one month, and the doc said you might deliver early. Does that mean...?"

Amanda tried to calm Lee when she said, "Don't worry Lee. I'm sure we'll have plenty of warning after I'm sure the pains are for real."

"Amanda, I'm so dumb about these things. I'm getting nervous already. Are you sure you feel all right?"

"Yes Lee. Please simmer down. Everything is okay for now."

"Yeah, for now! Is it safe for me to go to work? I do need to report to Dr. Smyth."

"Yes, Lee. I'll call if I need you."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm sure."

Lee got the newspaper and read it while he had his coffee. Amanda made breakfast for the boys, and Lee joined them for his second cup of coffee.

He didn't always do it, but he liked to touch base with the boys before he left for work. So far he and the boys had discussed all the ups and downs they experienced in life since he and Amanda married, and he always wanted to be there for them. Nothing drastic had come up yet, for which Lee was very thankful. Without having any experience as a parent, Amanda had marveled at how his instincts would tell him when something was bothering either of the boys. They had grown to love and depend on Lee.

Lee arrived at work and called on Dr. Smyth with the information he had requested.

"You were successful in only one visit? My how times have changed. I can remember when an assignment like this would take you three or four months."

"I guess I've grown up sir. Does that wind it up then?"

"Yes Lee, and thank you. I still don't see Ellen coming around so soon. What kind of magic did you use? Never mind, I don't want to know. I have an instinctive mind that tells me you are a happier man than you were in those days of love 'em and leave 'em. I think you are on the right track."

"Thank you sir. I think so too."

Lee left Dr. Smyth's office and went to the Q-Bureau, where he read his mail and took care of some paper work for Billy. He went to Billy's office and informed him that he had done some work for Dr. Smyth, but it was a small job and only took a few hours last night.

After lunch Lee called Amanda. "How are you Amanda?" Lee asked when she answered the phone.

"Well, I'm having some pains again and I think this is going to be the real thing. You might want to come home in a couple hours or so. I'm not going to the hospital until I think it's time. Listen, I'll call you when..."

"Nothing doing. I'm coming home right now."

"Well, all right. I'll see you then."

Before Lee reached home, Amanda knew for sure this was it. The contractions were a little harder and lasted longer. She had her hospital bag packed with a few things for herself and the baby.

She made a list of food items for the boys to find in the refrigerator and the cupboard, she finished putting the laundry away, and took a hower.

Lee rushed in the house, heard the water in the shower running. He peeked in the bathroom to assure himself that Amanda was okay.

"Everything okay Amanda?"

"Yes Lee, the contractions are about 10 minutes apart, so I'll get dressed and we'll go to the hospital. I alerted the doctor."

Lee picked up Amanda's overnight bag, helped her in the Bronco, and they left for the hospital.

Amanda was placed in the maternity ward in a room, received the necessary prepping by the nurses, and was examined by her doctor.

Lee was outside Amanda's room, looking in. He didn't want to be there when the hospital staff was working with her, but he didn't want to leave.

I feel like the fifth wheel of a wagon, thought Lee. I sure hope this doesn't take long. What if something goes wrong, he thought. It's my fault.

Finally, they all left Amanda's room and Lee came and sat down beside her and took her hand in his. "What did the doc say Amanda?"

"He said it would be awhile."

"What does that mean?"

"Lee, you must be patient. You can't hurry these things. Why don't you go down to the hospital cafe and have some coffee or something."

"I think I need more than coffee."

Amanda began breathing heavily and Lee became upset. "Amanda, what's wrong?"

"Lee, we should have gone to those classes they offered here at the hospital. I didn't think I needed to go after giving birth twice, but they would have benefited you. They show expectant mothers how to breath during labor. I'm just breathing in the proper manner during a contraction."

"Lee, I think you'd better get the doctor. Something just happened. The water broke."

"What? Oh yeah, I'll get the doc ... What did you say?"

"Go Lee."

"I'm going!"

Lee rushed to the nurses' station and asked them to get Amanda's doctor.

He soon came, examined Amanda again, and said, "It's time."

Lee dressed in hospital attire, as required, and entered the delivery room.

I don't know if I can stand this, thought Lee as he wiped sweat from his brow. He stood at Amanda's head and took her hands in his as the doctor directed. "Now, when she has a contraction Lee, I want you to help her."

"All right," answered Lee, trying to be brave.

After each contraction, the doctor directed Amanda to push. It seemed like hours to Lee. Each time Amanda pushed, she pulled Lee's arms. The contractions became hard and fast and in a short while the doctor pronounced that he could see the head. "One more good one Amanda and we'll have a baby."

Amanda followed the doctor's orders, pushed and pulled Lee's hands so hard he thought she would pull him over on top of her.

"A baby girl," said the doctor as he held her and encouraged her to cry.

It didn't take long for baby girl Stetson to fill her lungs with air and cry.

Lee just stood looking at his daughter in the doctor's hands. It seemed like a miracle to him. It was his daughter. His and Amanda's.

The doctor laid the baby on Amanda's stomach and gave the scissors to Lee to cut the cord. He looked at Amanda with mixed emotions. He was so excited, and didn't want to do it, but changed his mind when he saw Amanda's smile and the nod of her head. He did as the doctor directed.

Baby girl Stetson was wrapped in a blanket and put in Lee's arms to hold.

Lee was shaking, he was so nervous. He went to Amanda's side so she could see the baby too. Tears were streaming down her face, and before long Lee's eyes were getting shiny.

"Let the nurses take the baby now to clean her up and dress her."

Lee gave his daughter to a nurse who left the room with her.

The doctor finished his work, and Amanda was moved to another room.

When they were finally alone, Lee went to Amanda's side, kissed her and said, "Thanks Amanda, she's beautiful. You must be dreadfully tired. It was lots of work to get her here."

"I am tired Lee, but it really wasn't that bad. She's worth every effort. Do you want to call mother and the boys?"

"Sure, I'll go and call now."

When Lee returned to Amanda's room, she was holding their daughter.

"She's even prettier now than before," stated Lee.

"Do you want to hold her?"

"Oh, I'll pass for now. She looks sleepy."

"What shall we name her Lee? We talked about naming the baby Jenny if it was a girl didn't we?"

"Yes we did. Jenny it is."

The doctor came in and assured them that both mother and daughter were okay --- no complications, and if Amanda felt up to it, she and the baby could go home in a couple days.

"I think I'll feel up to going home after I get a good night's sleep."

"I think you will too," responded the doctor. "I'll see you tomorrow."

They took Jenny home to meet her big brothers and grandma in two days, as the doctor predicted. She immediately fit in and became a member of the Stetson household. Lee picked her up and talked to her every day after work, and got up with Amanda when the baby woke up at night. He was such a proud father, and day after day, Amanda thanked God for Lee. And Lee, in his own way, thanked God for his family.

At three months, Jenny had gained six pounds. She was a good eater and had begun to sleep all night. The boys were crazy about her and she started to smile when they would talk to her.

When the horse farmer called that he was ready to sell the horses, the whole family went to the farm. They all walked out into the pasture, Lee carrying Jenny, and Jamie carrying his labrador puppy.

They were well pleased with the selections they had made at the earlier date and with everyone agreeing, they purchased three horses. They were delivered the next day to the Stetson ranch.

They had lots of work to do, as all they had was the stable, a corral, and some oats and hay they had bought a few weeks ago.

Lee and Amanda were still very much in love. Their relationship had a large influence on the boys' development. They had grown into positive thinking, caring young adults, who would soon be exploring life on their own. Their own little Jenny would bring them lots of happiness for a long time to come. They both agreed they had reached their UTOPIA (place of ideal perfection).
