It wasn’t a sudden thing, falling out of love with Julie. There was no dramatic last moment, no cruel ultimatum. Nothing happened but the passage of time, and the realisation that they had become people who wanted and needed something fundamentally different out of life. People with incompatible desires, that no amount of affection could bend. In stages, in each step taken towards the things they each held most dear, they began to fall out of love. It was an ending of their relationship, something once precious. It was also the beginning of a new journey for each of them.
