Chapter 1: A quiet boy

Chapter Text

Namjoon stepped out of his bedroom with a tired sigh, rubbing a hand over his face as he walked into the dorm hallway. The apartment was unusually calm this morning, though he doubted it would stay that way for long. The last member was supposed to arrive today. Their manager had only told him a few things beforehand. It was a young, quiet boy, who recently transferred. They said he was a bit shy, but very good.

Namjoon had expected awkward introductions and maybe some nervous small talk. What he did not expect was to nearly stop walking when he saw the boy already standing in the middle of the living room. He looked tiny. Not because of his height, but because of the way he held himself. His shoulders curved inward beneath an oversized black hoodie, like he was trying to disappear into the fabric. Messy black hair partially covered wide dark eyes that instantly reminded Namjoon of a frightened deer.

The boy looked up the moment he noticed him. For a second, neither of them spoke. Then Namjoon offered a small smile. “Hey. You must be Jungkook.”

The boy stared at him quietly. “I’m Namjoon,” he continued gently. “Nice to meet you.” Jungkook’s fingers tightened around the strap of his bag before he gave a short nod. That was it. No greeting or introduction. Just a silence nob from the boy. Namjoon blinked once in surprise, but quickly pushed it aside. Maybe the kid was just overwhelmed. Moving into a dorm with six strangers was not exactly easy. So instead of mentioning it, he simply nodded toward the hallway. “Come on. I’ll show you your room.”

Jungkook followed without a word. His footsteps were quiet behind him, almost too quiet, and Namjoon noticed the way the boy kept glancing around carefully, as if he was studying every detail of the dorm. Like he was trying to figure out whether this place was safe. The thought made something uncomfortable twist inside Namjoon’s chest.

When they entered the bedroom, the others immediately looked up. “Oh, he’s here already?” Hoseok asked.

Namjoon stepped aside slightly. “Yeah. Jungkook just arrived.” The room instantly filled with greetings.

“Hi!” Jin said still have asleep.

“Welcome!” Jimin waved at the boy.  “You’re really young.”

Taehyung also waved excitedly from his bed while Jimin smiled softly at the new boy. Jungkook froze. Namjoon noticed it immediately. The boy’s shoulders stiffened beneath the hoodie. His eyes dropped straight to the floor and his grip on his bag tightened so hard his knuckles turned pale. Still no answer to anyone. No hello. Just nothing. The atmosphere became awkward for a moment, confusion flickering over the others’ faces, but thankfully nobody pushed him to speak. Namjoon quickly pointed toward the empty bed near the corner of the room. “This one’s yours.” Jungkook looked up briefly before nodding. “And that closet space too,” Namjoon added. “You can unpack your things there.” Another nod.

The boy immediately crouched beside his bags and quietly started unpacking. Every movement seemed careful and controlled, like he was trying not to take up too much space. Namjoon watched him for a few seconds. The kid was strange. Not rude or unfriendly, really strange. Just… so closed off. Like he was waiting for someone to tell him he did not belong there. Namjoon frowned faintly at the thought before deciding to leave it alone for now. Whatever was going on with Jungkook, forcing him to open up on his first day would probably only scare him more.

Hoseok walked into the kitchen still half asleep, yawning as he stretched his arms above his head. He expected an empty room. Instead, he nearly jumped when he noticed Jungkook already sitting at the kitchen table. The boy sat perfectly still in his chair, hands folded tightly in his lap. He was already dressed for the day, black hoodie sleeves pulled over part of his hands. His eyes were fixed somewhere on the table, distant and careful, like he was trying to make himself invisible. Hoseok immediately smiled. “Oh, good morning.”

Jungkook looked up quickly. Then he nodded. That was all. Hoseok grabbed a few things from the fridge anyway, refusing to let the awkward silence settle completely. “Did you sleep okay, nervous to move in?” he asked casually. Another nod, he found it a bit awkward. “You hungry?” He tried.

A tiny pause. Then another nod. Hoseok chuckled awkwardly to himself. “You don’t really talk much, huh?” The second the words left his mouth, Jungkook’s shoulders stiffened. It was subtle, but Hoseok noticed it instantly. The boy lowered his gaze even further, fingers twisting together underneath the sleeves of his hoodie. Something about that reaction made Hoseok feel unexpectedly guilty. So he quickly tried again. “That’s okay,” he said more softly while grabbing bread from the cabinet. “You probably just need some time.”

Jungkook stayed silent. Hoseok glanced at him carefully while preparing breakfast. The kid looked terrified. Not just shy. Terrified. Every little sound in the dorm seemed to make him tense slightly. Even when footsteps echoed down the hallway, Jungkook’s posture straightened immediately like he was bracing himself for something.

Hoseok found himself quietly wondering how this boy was supposed to stand on a stage someday. He seemed far too nervous. Far too anxious. How could someone who could barely even say hello perform in front of thousands of people? The thought made Hoseok confused more than anything else. Still, he tried not to judge too quickly.

Eventually the others slowly wandered into the kitchen one by one, still sleepy and messy from waking up. Jimin immediately smiled when he noticed Jungkook sitting there. “Morning.” Jungkook gave another quiet nod.

Taehyung plopped down beside him without hesitation, already talking about something random that barely made sense. Jungkook stayed silent through all of it, simply sitting there while the conversation flowed around him.

It slowly became obvious that he was not going to join in. Not because he looked uninterested. More because he looked… scared to. Every time someone looked at him too suddenly, his fingers tightened around the edge of his sleeve. Every time the conversation paused for even half a second, tension visibly filled his shoulders like he expected attention to land on him next.

The others noticed it too. The atmosphere became strangely careful around him. After breakfast, Namjoon checked the time and sighed. “We should head to the studio soon.”

Everyone slowly stood up to get their things. Jungkook immediately rose as well, quiet and obedient, lingering near the doorway while the others gathered near the entrance. Hoseok lowered his voice slightly once Jungkook seemed distracted. “I still don’t really get it,” he admitted quietly. “Why was he added to the group?”

Jimin frowned a little. “Hyung…”

“No, I don’t mean it badly,” Hoseok quickly clarified. “He just seems so nervous. Like… painfully nervous.”

“He hasn’t said a single word yet,” Taehyung added, confusion written openly across his face.

Namjoon sighed softly. “Maybe the company saw something in him.”

“Maybe,” Hoseok murmured. “But this whole situation is kind of strange.” None of them sounded cruel. Just confused. Concerned, even. But none of them noticed Jungkook standing completely still near the hallway entrance. Listening to them.   The boy’s eyes lowered slowly toward the floor. His chest tightened painfully. Of course they did not understand why he was there. He barely understood it himself. His fingers curled tightly inside his sleeves as insecurity flooded through him so hard it almost made him feel sick. They already thought he was weird. And it was only his first morning there.

The car ride to the studio felt strangely delicate. Nobody said it out loud, but all of them were being unusually careful around Jungkook. Namjoon made sure to tell him where he could sit before they even got into the car. Hoseok held the van door open for him and pointed toward the empty seat near the window. “You can sit there,” he said warmly. “It’s usually quieter in the back.”

Jungkook nodded immediately and climbed inside without a word, shoulders slightly hunched as if he was trying not to bother anyone. The others exchanged small glances. He looked nervous about everything. Even fastening his seatbelt seemed hesitant, his fingers fumbling slightly before he finally managed it with Jimin’ help.

Taehyung tried first. “So, Jungkook,” he started brightly, leaning over the seat a little. “Do you like games?” Jungkook blinked at him before giving a tiny shrug.

Hoseok jumped in next, trying to lighten the mood. “You know, if you stay this quiet forever, we’re gonna start thinking you secretly hate us.” The joke was gentle, followed by a laugh to make it less intimidating. But Jungkook only lowered his eyes. He did not smile. It looked like he was going to cry. “It was a joke” Hoseok quickly added. The atmosphere became awkward again almost immediately.

Namjoon quietly stepped in before things could get worse, steering the conversation toward something else while Jungkook sat silently beside the window, watching the city pass by outside.

The boy looked exhausted already. Not physically but emotionally. Like every interaction cost him energy. By the time they arrived at the studio, the members had mostly stopped trying to force conversation. Instead, they simply guided him carefully through everything. “This way Jungkook, you can stay close to us” Jimin said, he even took hold off Jungkook his hoodie to guide him.

“You can leave your bag there.” Yoongi explained when they reached the studio. “Just like us”.

“Careful, the floor’s slippery.” Jin said when Jungkook went to change his shoes. It almost felt like handling a frightened stray cat. Jungkook followed every instruction quietly, nodding whenever someone spoke to him.

Then training started. At first the members kept things simple, mostly watching him carefully to see how he reacted. Hoseok demonstrated a few basic dance moves while the others loosely practiced around the room. Jungkook stood near the mirror, tense and silent. Namjoon honestly did not expect much. The boy looked far too anxious to perform properly. But after a moment, Jungkook slowly copied the movements. And suddenly the room went quiet. Because he was good. Really good. Not sloppy beginner-good. Not like a “promising trainee” good. Actually really good. His movements were sharp, controlled and smooth in a way that immediately caught attention. Even while looking nervous, his body seemed to understand the choreography naturally.

Hoseok stared openly. “…Wait.”

Taehyung blinked rapidly. “He learned that already?”

Jimin looked equally shocked. Jungkook froze slightly under all the attention again, immediately shrinking into himself like he regretted drawing eyes toward him. But now the members were staring for a completely different reason. The shy, silent boy they had spent all morning worrying about expecting him to break suddenly moved like he belonged there. Like dancing was the only language his body knew how to speak fluently.

Before anyone could say much more, one of the managers entered the practice room holding a notebook. “Oh good, you’re already here,” he said before looking toward Jungkook. “Jungkook-ah, can you try the part we practiced yesterday?”

Every member turned toward him in confusion. Yesterday? Jungkook looked nervous instantly, fingers twitching at his sides, but after a few seconds he gave a small nod. The instrumental started playing softly through the speakers. Then Jungkook sang. And once again, the room fell completely silent. His voice was beautiful. Soft but steady. Emotional in a way that felt effortless. The nervousness never fully disappeared from his expression, but the second he sang, something changed. His voice filled the room so naturally that it almost did not make sense compared to the terrified boy who could barely look people in the eyes. Namjoon felt genuine shock crawl up his spine. Hoseok slowly lowered the water bottle in his hand. Taehyung’s mouth literally fell open. The manager simply nodded like he had expected this reaction all along. When the song ended, Jungkook immediately went quiet again, lowering his head as if he wanted to disappear after accidentally revealing too much.

Nobody spoke for a moment. Because suddenly they understood. At least partly. This was why he was there. Not because the company pitied him. Not because they randomly chose him. The boy was talented enough to leave them speechless. Still, the situation remained confusing. Jungkook could dance beautifully. Sing beautifully. But outside of that, he barely seemed able to exist comfortably around other people. And the contrast between those two versions of him only made the members more curious about what could possibly have happened to make someone so talented look so afraid all the time.

The practice room stayed quiet for a while after Jungkook finished singing. The members kept glancing toward him with varying levels of disbelief while the boy himself stood awkwardly near the mirror again, eyes lowered as though none of it had happened.

The manager eventually clapped his hands together lightly. “Well,” he said with a satisfied smile, “now you understand why he’s here.”

Hoseok let out a small laugh of disbelief. “You really didn’t warn us enough.”

The manager chuckled. “I thought it would be more effective if you saw it yourselves.”

Namjoon crossed his arms thoughtfully, eyes still lingering on Jungkook. “He’s honestly incredible.”

“He is,” the manager agreed immediately. “His singing and dancing skills are exceptional, especially for his age.”

Jungkook visibly shrank a little at suddenly becoming the center of attention again. The manager noticed but continued speaking casually. “He’s just… a little quiet, aren’t you Jungkook?.” A little quiet felt like the understatement of the century, but nobody interrupted him. “We don’t exactly know why,” the manager admitted after a moment. “But we’re hoping you boys can help him settle in a bit. He’s still young, after all.”

Jungkook kept staring at the floor. “You might have to be patient with him,” the manager continued gently. “Look out for him a little. Help him adjust.” Then he smiled confidently. “But honestly? We believe he’s going to be an amazing addition to the group.”

The members slowly nodded. Because after seeing him perform, none of them could deny that part anymore. The talent was obvious. Still, confusion lingered heavily in the room. The manager glanced around. “Any questions?”

Nobody answered at first. Mostly because they did have questions. Too many questions perhaps. But none of them really knew how to ask them without sounding rude. Eventually Jin raised a hand slightly from where he leaned against the wall. “So…” he started carefully, trying to sound casual. “What do we actually know about him,., you…?”

The manager looked toward Jungkook briefly before answering. “Not much, honestly. We know he’s from the countryside. He auditioned, and the second we saw him perform, we knew immediately. He has been in training with us for some time before we made this decision” He shrugged lightly. “That’s all we really need. What matters is the talent standing in front of us. He is eighteen so we didn’t need parental consent or anything.” Jungkook’s shoulders curled inward even more at those words. The manager either did not notice or pretended not to. Jungkook looked anything but eighteen. A few minutes later he left the room, leaving the seven boys alone together again.

The silence returned almost instantly. Taehyung looked toward Jungkook first, curiosity written all over his face. “You really surprised us.” Jungkook looked up briefly. Then back down. No answer of course.

Jimin sat down cross-legged on the floor nearby, making sure his voice stayed soft. “You know… you don’t have to be nervous around us.” Jungkook’s fingers twitched slightly at that. Still nothing.

The members exchanged uncertain glances again. Finally Hoseok tilted his head carefully. “Can you… talk?”

The second the question was asked, Jungkook froze completely. His breathing visibly changed. Too fast. His eyes widened slightly before dropping straight to the floor again. And he did not answer. Not even with a nod this time. The tension in the room immediately shifted.

Namjoon noticed the panic building in the boy’s posture and quickly stepped in before things became overwhelming. “It’s okay,” he said gently. “You don’t have to answer out loud.”

Jin quickly grabbed a nearby notebook and pen from the table before crouching down a careful distance away from Jungkook. “You can write instead if you want.”

For the first time, Jungkook actually looked visibly distressed. Like he was going to have a panic attack. His hands tightened so hard around his sleeves that his knuckles turned white again. He stared at the notebook like it terrified him.

The members slowly realized something was wrong. Jin’s expression softened immediately. “…You don’t have to,” he reassured quietly.

After several painfully long seconds, Namjoon asked carefully, “Can you write?” Jungkook hesitated. Then slowly shook his head. The room fell silent again. It was small. Such a small motion. The members looked at each other quietly as realization slowly settled over them. Oh. Jungkook immediately lowered his head further afterward, obvious shame flooding his expression the second he realized they understood. And suddenly Namjoon felt awful. Because the boy looked genuinely embarrassed. Like he expected them to laugh. Or judge him. But nobody did. If anything, the confusion only deepened.

Jimin’s chest tightened painfully as he looked at the silent boy standing in front of them. Jungkook was clearly talented beyond belief. His dancing was incredible. His voice was beautiful.Yet somehow he looked terrified of the simplest conversations. He could not speak to them. Could not write. Barely even made eye contact. The contrast made no sense.

Taehyung frowned slightly as he watched Jungkook curl further into himself. The boy was strange. Very strange. But not in a bad way. More like someone who had been dropped into the world without ever being taught how to safely exist inside it.
