May was just about to end. Roses were at their blooming peak, the sun was shining constantly and Jihoon was smiling brightly. May was always a magical month both for him and his boyfriend, aside from the obvious reason, both of them liked May because of its beauty, because of the many flowers blooming in that month but mostly because every weekend could be spent in nature doing nothing.
“Hyung, hyung!” Kyungmin ran up breathlessly to Jihoon. “Kyungmin, oh my God! What are you doing here?” Jihoon said, lips parting in surprise.
Kyungmin wasn't supposed to come for another two weeks since he lived on the other side of the country. They were supposed to meet up on the 12th June.
“I'm here to surprise you silly!” Kyungmin said with a big smile plastered on his face. “I'm so happy to see you.” Jihoon said in that cutesy tone he usually uses with Kyungmin.
“Come inside, we need to talk!” Jihoon said, hugging Kyungmin like he might disappear if he let go.

“Done texting your boyfriend?” Kyungmin asked, the mischief obvious in his voice. “Yeah, and why are you talking like that?” “We'll get back to it later, hyung.” Kyungmin said while crossing his arms.
“So how did I get here you ask? The answer to that question is very simple hyung. I used up all my free absences from the first and second semester and it turned out i got enough days to finish school early.” Kyungmin said proudly. “You're such a genius for doing that. I should do that too, steal Youngjae and go on a trip to France.” Jihoon said, already dreaming about it.
“Speaking of Youngjae, what will you give him?” Kyungmin said, and laughed immediately after seeing the pure panic on Jihoon's face. “FUCK, i completely forgot. What day it is Kyungmin, and stop laughing”
“It's the 30th, hyung, you're cooked.” Kyungmin said, covering his face with his hands so a laugh doesn't escape. “Oh god, oh god, I'm doomed.” Jihoon said, suddenly pacing around the room like a headless fly.
“I should call Junghwan hyung.” He said, pulling out his phone quicker than the speed of light.

“Hey, Jihoon, what's up?” Junghwan asked casually. “I'm doomed hyung, i totally forgot Youngjae's birthday was tomorrow.” Jihoon said, almost on the verge of tears. “First and foremost, calm down Jihoon, second he loves you so much that even if it's something small he'll cherish it for the rest of his life.” Junghwan said between small chuckles. “What about a picnic?” Jihoon said. “That's a good idea, he really loves them.” “Thank you hyung.” Jihoon said and bowed even though he couldn't be seen.
“So, loverboy, what are you going to do?” Kyungmin asked, teasing already heard in his voice. “You're going to laugh.” Jihoon whined. “I swear to everything that i won't.” Kyungmin said, but his expression was betraying him. “I'm going to take him out on a picnic since he likes them and I'm going to write him a letter.” “Why would I laugh?” Kyungmin said, half surprised by this side of Jihoon he's seeing and half jealous that he doesn't have a boyfriend.
“So how will you plan it out? Can I help?” Kyungmin asked, genuinely interested. “First I'll need to call Junghwan hyung, Dohoon hyung and Jongseob, then I'll need to find a watermelon and then I'll need to perfect my writing so that he will be able to read what i wrote.” “That sounds like a great plan, how can i help?” Kyungmin asked, looking like a little hamster.
“You can go and find a watermelon and I'll do the rest, thank you Kyungminie!” Jihoon said as they parted ways.

There was just one thing left to do for his birthday plan to actually work - see if Youngjae will be free tomorrow.
“heyaaa love” jihoon said as Youngjae picked up the phone.
“jihoon!” Youngjae exclaimed then continued “how are you doing? Do you need anything?” Youngjae said in the gentle tone he always uses.
“I need to know if you'll be free tomorrow.” Jihoon asked nervously. “Jihoon, when wasn't i free on a Sunday?” Youngjae said fondly. “Oh, yeah… anyways be at the park near our school around 5pm please.” “Of course!! Do you need anything?” Youngjae asked and Jihoon thanked the universe for setting him up with such a gentle and caring person. “I love you Youngjae, i mean it with all my heart.” Jihoon said cutely, waiting for a response. “Love you too my Jihoonie, I'll always love you.” Youngjae said as gently as he always does.

Jihoon woke up to a rainbow in his eyes. The rain was seeping quietly and the sun was shining brightly creating the perfect rainbow. He frowned upon seeing the rain but the rainbow seemed to remove the frown off his face. “We’re going to have a rather interesting day today” he muttered to himself while getting up.
List of things that needed to be done today
1. Don’t fuck up the surprise
2. Don’t forget to write the letter
3. Don’t forget to go to Kyungmin’s house to get the watermelon
4. Have fun
5. Don’t kiss Youngjae in front of Junghwan
He called Youngjae the moment he stepped out of his bed. “Hi Jihoon” Youngjae said drowsily. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOVE!!!!” Jihoon screamed into the phone. “Hahaha, thank you” Youngjae said, sounding more awake now, probably awakened by Jihoon’s scream. “I love you so much” Jihoon said into the phone, just wanting to kiss Youngjae. “I love you too my Jihoonie!” Youngjae said happily. “Can you come over for a sec?” Jihoon said, failing to resist the urge.
Soon light footsteps were heard across Jihoon’s living room. “Jihoonie, i’m here!” Youngjae said and Jihoon immediately went for it. They kissed in Jihoon’s living room, both in their pyjamas but it was still romantic. “You asked me to come over just so you could kiss me?” Youngjae asked teasingly. “Yeah….” Jihoon suddenly got red at the sight of his beautiful boyfriend. “I missed you so much” he said quietly. “I missed you too” youngjae said, pressing a quick peck to Jihoon’s mouth.

5pm was approaching faster than he thought but he still hadn’t done anything, except kiss Youngjae, of course. He started on the letter first. Youngjae confessed to him with a letter so letters were very important and dear to him. He still keeps the letter Youngjae gave him alongside the bouquet of yellow tulips.

Jihoon immediately rushed to the door to greet Kyungmin. “I don;t have time now, sorry hyung, here’s the thighs you asked me to get you i need to go, baii!”
“Bye i guess?”
Jihoon immediately continued doing what he started - writing a letter to youngjae.

He started writing and tears already threatened to spill over the paper.
Dear my Youngjae,
Happy birthday, i’ll start it with that.
If someone in September told me that by the time we reach May you'll be my boyfriend of three months i wouldn't believe a single word. Having you is better than being the richest person in the world. Being by your side is better than having 1000 loyal friends. From September you have made me feel seen, made me feel good about my pathetic self, you have made me excited to live again. You took out Yudai for me. I will never ever be able to repay the things that you have done for me but the thing that is certain is that you'll always be my favourite person on this earth. Even though the gift isn't much, sorry, happy birthday love, i love you more than anything could ever describe. Please never leave me because losing you means losing a part of myself too.
When Jihoon finished he was a crying mess to say the least. His face was full of hot tears going into his mouth or falling off his cheeks onto his hands. His hands trembled slightly as he tried to wipe them only to fail miserably anf sob even louder.
He looked around, quickly lowering the blinds and curtains so Youngjae couldn't see him in that situation.
He calmed himself down after 30 minutes of crying and prepared the rest of the gift. Now the only thing remaining was to execute the surprise.
….
Jihoon arrived at the picnic place first, gifts in hand and a bright smile plastered across his face. He slowly set everything up just the way Youngjae liked. The picnic blanket was white with many watermelons on it and the breeze was just like Youngjae liked.
Some minutes later the others arrived and only Youngjae was missing. Jihoon had told him to arrive at 5:30, knowing him he usually arrives a minute late.
At exactly 5:31 Youngjae was seen jogging lightly to the spot. His eyes lit up and the sight in front of him and he hugged Jihoon immediately.
“Omg! What is this? Thank you!” He almost screamed in excitement. “It's nothing much” jihoon rubbed the back of his neck then continued “Happy birthday love.” he said and pressed a light kiss to Youngjae's lips.
Just then the other three stood up and started singing. “Happy birthday to you!!” Youngjae hugged each of them individually then sat on the blanket.
The corners of his eyes were filled with tears but he was good at controlling them. “Open your presents.” Dohoon said cheerfully.
After opening the other presents it was time for Jihoon's. He carefully unwrapped everything and took the gently wrapped envelope in his hands. He opened the envelope and started reading it.
Everything around them stilled as Jihoon closely watched Youngjae. His hands were shaking slightly but his expression stayed focused on the letter.
Just then, out of nowhere, Youngjae pulled Jihoon into a tight kiss. “I love you” he muttered as he deepened the kiss. When they pulled away Youngjae immediately started talking. “Thank you so much for this birthday present Jihoonie, it's so perfect. Just a birthday wish is enough so don't ever think that it isn't much.” Youngjae said as the took Jihoon's hands in his and continued speaking “I'll never leave you because than the only reason I'm still standing will disappear, thank you for your kind words, i really love you the most in this whole world.” Youngjae said happily as the wiped the tears from his eyes.
Junghwan, Dohoon and Jongseob started clapping and throwing roses beside them and that's when Youngjae spotted something else.
“Awwww” he said and dropped his head as tears started pouring down his cheeks again.
“Youngjae, what's happening? Did something upset you?” Jihoon said worriedly but Youngjae just made an X with hands and slowly raised his head.
“T-the y-yellow tulips” he said barely forming any words through his sobs. Jihoon turned around and saw them again, the yellow tulips sitting beautifully on the sun like the first time Jihoon gave them to Youngjae 8 years ago.
“I love you so much.” Youngjae said and cried even harder. “No one, other than those two, wasn't this caring, barely anyone remembered what I liked and you remembered every thing i have ever said to you.” Youngjae said, hugging Jihoon tightly.
They stayed on that blanket cuddled up long after the others left just looking at the sun. Youngjae ate watermelon happily and they talked about the days they first met.
“Thank you for staying by my side Jihoonie, thank you for not letting me be alone forever, thank you for everything you ever done for me. This has been my favourite birthday and I'm glad that i get to celebrate it with you. I'll never leave you my beautiful stranger.”
