Chapter Text

Johnny and Ponyboy have been best friends for a while. They shared many things in common, they trusted each other a little more than anyone else in the gang. Johnny was the pet of the gang, he wasn’t anything else to anyone but a buddy or someone to just talk to; but to Ponyboy, he wasn’t anything like that, he was his best friend and a great person. To Johnny, Ponyboy wasn’t just some ‘kid’ who’d follow along, but he was a great listener, and an amazing best friend. They comforted each other in their hardest times and laughed together, making moments last forever. What would they ever do without each other?

Ponyboy would always go to the lot with Johnny, Johnny had a horrible family, his parents never cared for him. His old man would always beat him whenever he’d get the opportunity. His mom would yell or scold him too. Ponyboy knew he never deserved a family like that, the gang was a better family to Johnny. Ponyboy always treated him like a real person, just as the gang did.

Ponyboy headed to the lot to meet up with Johnny, he quietly sat next to him, watching Johnny’s dark brown eyes watch the sunset. Ponyboy smiled at the sight, silently admiring him. Johnny jumped as soon as he saw Ponyboy, not realizing he was right next to him.

“P-Ponyboy! Didn’t see you there.” Johnny looked at him. “Oh, sorry Johnny.. I didn’t mean to scare ya.” Ponyboy nervously looked back at Johnny. They awkwardly watched the sunset together, the stars slowly appearing and shining. “Y’know Ponyboy..”, Johnny started, “Sometimes I wish the war between the Socs and Greasers would end. Since we’re all just.. people.” Johnny narrowed his eyes.
Ponyboy understood the look and nodded in agreement. “You’ve got the right mind, all the jumping and beating up, it’s kind of useless.”
Johnny looked at Ponyboy’s eyes, his eyes widening, “You.. agree with me?” Ponyboy smiled warmly, “Why wouldn’t I?” Johnny felt a weird pit in his stomach, his face suddenly a weird light pink. Johnny grabbed at his stomach, not recognizing the feeling.

Johnny cleared his throat, “Y-Yeah, because you’re my best friend.” He murmured to himself. Ponyboy sighed, “I can’t believe how pretty the sky can be sometimes.” Johnny also watched the sky. It was a light orange, a dark orange, and slight pink in between. The Moon would soon move in to replace the Sun, and the stars would soon shine bright white. Johnny lay his head on Ponyboy’s shoulder, resting his eyes. Ponyboy looked at Johnny, he definitely needed rest from the look on his face. He was tired. Ponyboy let out a small sigh of relief. Johnny lifted his head and looked at Ponyboy’s eyes, and Ponyboy looked at him, their gaze’s meeting. Johnny put his head on Ponyboy’s lap. Ponyboy stroked Johnny’s hair, it was greasy, yet soft and fluffy like a puppy. Ponyboy smiled softly, “I don’t know what I would ever do without you”, Ponyboy whispered quietly to himself. Johnny heard him, and his heart raced a little fast, and he felt a wave of warmth and excitement on his face, but ignored it to enjoy the moment with Ponyboy. ‘He’s.. kind of cute when he sleeps like this’, Ponyboy thought to himself. Was it wrong to think like this? Ponyboy silently cursed himself for thinking like a fool.

It was getting dark, and the Moon shined bright. Ponyboy couldn’t help but notice how innocent Johnny looked when he slept, was he actually asleep? “Johnny.. do you mind if I rest my head on yours? I’m a little tired too.” Johnny nodded, shifting around as Ponyboy lay his head on his. Ponyboy noticed a slight change in Johnny’s heartbeat, it raced a little faster than it should. “Hey Johnny, you okay? I feel your heartbeat racing quite fast.” Johnny shifted uncomfortably, “O-of course! I’m just uh..” Johnny thought for a few seconds, trying to come up with an excuse or reason. “I’m just a little.. cold.” Johnny wasn’t exactly lying when he said that, he was cold. Ponyboy hugged him, his warmth making Johnny feel a little flustered. Soon enough, they fell asleep. Ponyboy first woke up. He yawned, “What time is it?” Johnny didn’t reply, he was still sleeping. Ponyboy shook him gently to wake him up. Johnny woke up, his head lifting to meet Ponyboy’s eyes. Their faces were close, way too close. Johnny immediately realized and stood up embarrassed. “Sorry, we were a little too close.” Ponyboy looked at him confused, not really knowing what he meant. “Oh it’s fine. Anyways.. wait. Oh shoot, I need to get back, Darry’s gonna get mad.” Ponyboy sighed, “Thanks for staying with me.” Johnny nodded, “It was nice spending time with you too.” Ponyboy was heading back now. Surely Darry wouldn’t mind if he came back late. He looked through the window, Sodapop was on the couch, probably sleeping? And Darry was reading the newspaper. How was he gonna get in the house unnoticed?
