Work Text:
The air inside the bullpen was stale and dry, it left your lips cracked and your throat begging for water. Emily spun around in her chair, clicking a silver pen in her fingers. The clock read 10am sharp making Emily exhale. She watched along as the seconds ticked by in a slowness that made her skin crawl. Today's morning had already been…let's say a lot and the memory was trying it's best to break through to the forefront of her brain but Emily refused.
"JJ we need to talk about this"
"I get that Em, believe me when I say that I do but can you just give me five seconds to process"?
Emily bit the inside of her cheek, heartbeat a couple beats too fast but she controlled her features like always, taking a deep breath.
"Just promise me that you won't run from this okay"?
JJ hadn't answered in words, instead pulling the older woman close for a kiss that was answer enough on it's own.
A cold cup of coffee was sitting on the desk, long forgotten about as Emily tried to stay afloat and not drown in thoughts. Maybe she could have approached this thing differently but how? JJ needed to know, deserved to know too and Emily had found it increasingly difficult to keep this to herself or better said to herself and Garcia. Emily chuckled, a rare sight but the mental image of Pen's face crept up and it had been hilarious.
Emily hated feeling like this, being so unfocused and out of it. How did she end up allowing JJ so much power over her? That stupid blonde hair paired with the even more stupid ocean blue eyes and that cursed jawline Emily for sure didn't think could be used to cut glass with.
Her neck was tense and staring at the open case file wouldn't help so she got up, cold coffee cup in hand and made her way over to the small kitchen.
While waiting for a fresh cup to be ready, chewing on a finger nail in the meantime Emily's overthinking was broken by a clear, all too familiar voice.
"Hey Em, mind making that two cups"?
