Chapter 1: You Mustn't Make Assumptions, Sirius

Summary:

Some mornings change everything.

Chapter Text

Sirius Black wakes up on a particularly cold October morning with a bright beam of light burning into his eyes. He scrambles out of his disheveled bed and just barely avoids tripping over his abandoned Doc Martins on his floor.

Upon glancing at the clock, he notices he has already woken up an hour later than he was supposed to.

Sirius quickly puts on his cafe uniform and wipes off his eyeliner from last night. He attempts to fix his hair into something that comes close to somewhat presentable.

He checks the time once more, 7:50. “Fuck!” He yells and runs toward the door.

Sirius slips his arms through the sleeves of his very well-loved leather jacket, and stuffs a Monster into his tote bag before heading out of the door.

Sirius finally arrives at The Moon’s Brew (The best coffee shop in all of Brooklyn, according to his humble opinion and that of many locals) at 8:02 and bursts through the door.

“You’re late.” is the first thing Sirius hears after the soft ring of the bell attached to the door. The voice is coming from his boss, Mary. She may look like a warm and welcoming individual, but don’t let her appearance fool you, she runs a strict program.

“I know Mary, I’m so sorry. I overslept,” he says as he shrugs off his jacket and hangs it up along with his tote bag on the hook behind the counter. He cracks open his Monster can and takes a sip, before tying his apron around his waist.

“I don’t know how you drink that crap. It is entirely chemicals.” Mary says while wearing a disgusted expression on her face.

“Chemicals that keep me awake enough to do this job.”

Mary is about to argue, when she is stopped by the sound of the bell by the door ringing softly.

They both look up and Sirius feels his mouth go dry. The man who walked in was the most gorgeous being he had ever seen. He was tall, probably about 6’4, wearing brown oxfords, beige corduroy pants, and a sweater that fit him perfectly. He had light brown hair that glowed a honey shade in the sunlight, and one long scar that spanned from the edge of his jaw and disappeared below his collar.

Sirius suddenly felt very aware of how little effort he put into getting ready today. The tall man walked towards him and Sirius stood up straight and mentally groaned at the fact he was meeting this man while in an apron.

“Hey, could I please get an iced latte?” He looked down at Sirius’s name-tag then made eye contact with him again, “Sirius?” His crooked smile was so goddamn charming, just hearing this handsome stranger say his name made Sirius’s stomach flip.

Sirius realized he waited a beat too long to respond, so he blinked back to reality and plastered on what he hoped was a smile as charming as his. “Yeah, coming right up! Could I get a name for the order?”

Mary looks at him with a strange face, “No one el-“

Sirius gives her a sharp look that cuts her off.

The tall man gives an amused smile before responding, “Yeah, Remus.”

Remus; Sirius could hear him say that name all day. It had such a lovely ring to it. He turns around and begins making his latte while he hums along to a David Bowie song that’s playing over the cafe speakers.

When he turns around to hand him his drink, Remus looks delighted. “I love that song, too! The radios don't usually play Bowie!”

“Really?” Sirius didn’t normally judge a book by it’s cover, but Remus just didn’t strike him as the type.

“Yeah! I have all of his albums on vinyl.”

Sirius grinned at this, “That’s really awesome, I didn’t suspect you as the type.’

“Ah, well you mustn’t make assumptions, Sirius.” With that, Remus handed Sirius some cash, took his latte, and headed out the door with a soft wave and a wink directed right as Sirius.

And yep, that did it. Sirius Black was in trouble.
