Chapter 1: How can someone so young sing words so sad.

Chapter Text

Dazai wanted to die. It was the one of the first things that people would find out about when they met him. Strangers, however, were not aware of the norm for him. Some who had a sense of justice or compassion bigger than themselves, just couldn’t understand the concept of it. He couldn't count the number of times strangers tried to save him from himself.

They always gave up sooner or later. When they figured out he had no intention of listening to them, or when he suggested double suicide.

But this guy was just not getting the hint.

Dazai sat on the edge of the roof. Looking over the edge he saw hundreds of people going about their day, the sun slowly setting over the horizon and plunging the world into darkness. It was a beautiful day to die.

The fall would cause him to pass out before he even hit the ground, of course he was too high for his body to not bounce off the ground a couple times. But he wanted this view and a shorter building would most certainly have things in the way of the sky.

He sensed the man before they could see him. Dazai wondered what he was doing on the rooftop.

Most likely he came up for fresh air. He spared a glance behind him, the middle aged man didn’t have any distinctive features. He looked like a blend of the people he comes across on the street. He was wearing a suit, evidently having just gotten off work. He was an over worker or had an important job, who else would be out this late in a suit?

Dazai believed it was the second theory. From where he was seated he couldn’t see any signs of continuous sleep deprivation, but the man had an obvious air of exhaustion clinging to his body. His job had run long today, but what for?

The man crept closer, his hands in a placating manner, “Can you step away from the ledge?” His voice was soft, like approaching a puppy or a child who didn’t know any better.

Dazai grinned, “Of course! But could you tell me why I should?” It was a stupid game he liked to play with the strangers who tried to stop him. He would ask them their reason for living, their reason for not being in the same position as himself.

“Because you’ll die if you fall.”

Well that was rather blunt.

“If you haven’t noticed, that was the point.” He shuffled closer to the edge letting himself feel the gravity of the earth drag him closer and closer to the core.

A hand was suddenly at the collar of his shirt, not gripping it tightly, just resting its grip there for a moment. “Please step back, I do not know what is wrong, but I can assure you that it is not worth losing your life.”

“Well, I guess I tried!” Dazai quickly whipped his legs around back to the building brushing off the man. Standing up with exaggerated flair, only to trip over himself and stumble back. His legs hit the edge where he was just seated causing his knees to buckle beneath him and sent him over the edge.

Bliss overcame his mind, for all of two seconds until a hand grabbed at his shirt. Dazai opened his eyes half expecting the face he saw to be of the blunt seriousness he saw before. He knew he would be wrong, but it didn’t keep him from almost being shocked as the man’s face contorted into fear.

Now that he was closer the man’s face was more defined, he was beautiful. If he were a woman Dazai would ask about a double suiside right away, alas he was not and Dazai was still hanging off the side of a building.

“Please be more careful.” The man lifted him up onto the roof. Dazai knew he was skinny but he was very much not as light as the man made him look. Combined with the momentum at which he was falling, that guy was strong. Much stronger than the average person at the very least.

Stronger than an average office worker.

He could cross off an ability right away, he had touched Dazai when he had to pull him up. Dazai could pretend the man just worked out a lot more than the average person, but he saw his hands were dainty and connected to a small wrist.

If he were lifting weights, like he would have to in order to have been strong enough to lift Dazai, his hands would be a bit calloused. They were soft, and Dazai got the feeling that the rest of his body was just as thin and unmuscular.

So, a non-ability user, but much like Kenji and his super-strength with an office job. An important office job, maybe the government? Strange… Dazai had much to look into.

“Are you alright?” He asked, looking Dazai up and down checking systematically for injuries.

“I guess it’s just not my day!” Dazai smiled brightly, practically skipping to the rooftop exit, with one last look at the sunset that had long lost its beauty he let the man stand by himself.
