He had just gotten curious about the game, that was all. It had been a long time since he'd immersed himself in online games— or online in general, and he thought now was a good time to try since it was the semester break, and he had no papers to grade. Satine was playing it, forced by her students, and had bothered Obi-Wan with it, too, telling him she had no one to play with since it was a multiplayer, open-world type.
He checked the clock; 10:28 p.m. Oh.
He had spent eight hours in the game. Satine was right— it was addicting. He had spent three hours getting through the main quest, and had spent another three hours along a side mission to get the swordsman art, since the default was a spear and it felt clunky to use. He didn't know what Satine’s player number was, though, so he didn't get to add her.
Obi-Wan went through his game; he just had to finish this boss for the day to log out. The problem was that the boss was too high level, and he couldn't acquire the materials needed for his character to upgrade. He had been trying to change his gears, tune it up, but to no avail. He just kept getting defeated, all his replenishing materials used up.
The game notification beeped. He checked his messages.

Obi-Wan frowned. Princess? Was it because he was using a female character? The default character was a female one, and he didn't see the need to change it since it was the default, and he never really cared about his appearance in the game. He did give her the free cute costume from the mail, and gave her a hat to protect her head since there was a mission with raining fireballs.
He was about to type that he was a man when Darth Vader invited him to the dungeon— the highest difficulty, too— and the matter was put out of his mind in order to defend himself. His character was only level 34, while Darth Vader’s was 101. The dungeon was in level 90, and just one strike from the boss dragon killed his character, forcing him to be on spectator mode.
In the end, he managed to get the materials. High-ranking ones, too, but he couldn't quite use them yet since his character hadn't reached the minimum yet.

Obi-Wan accepted it, and saw Darth Vader’s profile while doing so. His eyes widened. EMPEROR I was his title; earlier, in the events tab, there was this PVP gameplay that would reward players with prestigious titles such as EMPEROR I, II, III, achievable only by the strongest players in the game mode with the EMPEROR I being the highest. Oh, dear. It seemed that Darth Vader wasn't merely an average player in the game, and looked like he was one of those who spent the most time and money. His character was decked with cosmetics achievable only by whales.

Obi-Wan logged out of the game and took off his headphones. He stretched his neck, moved his arms and legs, and checked the clock again. 11:19 PM. It was way past his bed time. Satine really was right— it was addicting, and it appeared he’d even made a friend, although he had forgotten to tell him he wasn't a girl.
Well. He could always just tell Darth Vader that tomorrow.
