A black cat was hiding under a tree while rain was pouring down, washing off leaves down the street. The cat wasn’t scared, not uncomfortable, and not even anxious. There was no need to be, the cat understood. Everything felt so familiar, like home.
The cat didn’t have a home, or at least the thing that people call their homes. Comfort can be found in other things rather than buildings, for example, people. Or a specific person. The person, who would come to see the cat almost every day to give it some scratches and food, while sitting next to it, not rushing to leave.
Every time, the person still left. He simply just had to. Maki called the cat Nico every time he saw them, and the name grew on the cat. Maki didn’t want to leave the cat there, but he promised to take it home once it was possible.
Maki prepared everything; got cat toys, feeders, litter box and a cat tree, of course. It took him quite a while, as saving up money in this day and age is very hard. Once he got everything done, he finally visited Nico the cat again.
As he was sitting down next to the tree, Maki heard a chirp and quiet steps coming towards him. He sat there with Nico, petting him on the head while he was purring. After an hour or so, he picked up the cat and went home.
Nico got used to his new place very quickly. The place became his new “home”, but the real home was Maki. Nico could do just fine outside, but he didn't know what a life was without his favorite human. Nico was happy, as long as Maki was by his side. For Maki, Nico became way more important than any human in his life.
