Work Text:

Mukuro hated the city.

There were too many threats to keep track of. Anybody could be an assassin or thief waiting to strike. It kept her head constantly buzzing and her whole body tense.

Spending years with Fenrir and out on the streets with Junko had taught her to be hyper aware of everything that could happen and was around her. Some would call it a curse but she’s learned to live with it. As long as she could keep the few people she cared about safe, she was grateful.

The buzzing didn’t matter however when she was spending time with Makoto.

He had invited her out to spend the day together during their break. They had been dating for a while now but that didn’t stop her heart from beating at the speed of a bullet whenever he talked to her. Of course her love for him would never top her love for her sister. That’s what she would keep telling herself at least.

“You alright Mukuro?”

That’s when she realized she’d fallen a few feet behind Makoto.
“Oh! Y-yeah I’m fine. Just a lot going on is all.”
Makoto frowned, “You sure you’re ok? We could head back to the dorms and spend the day there if you’d like.”
“No no, it’s alright. Nothing I can’t handle.”
She was lying a bit with that statement. She would much prefer to stay in the peace and quiet of her dorm. Whenever he would fall asleep on her after a day out would always bring her the most calm she’d felt in months.

“Well the restaurant I was talking about is only a few minutes away so you can relax then.”
He flashed a big smile and took her hand.

That smile. That amazing hopeful smile. She’d heard her sister rattle off about despair and how it was so great and hope was horrible. She’d never fully understand her reasoning but it didn’t matter. She loved her sister and would stick with her until the end. His smile made her entertain the opposite though. It gave her a sliver of what she could only describe as hope, and she fell in love with it.

Anything that would make him smile was worth it in her eyes, even if that meant lying to him a little bit. It just made her the happiest girl on Earth to see his smile.

As long as Makoto was here, maybe the city wasn’t so bad.
