Hypothetical

Summary:

the sixth poem of my darkroom collection. the others will be posted soon!

Notes:

Work Text:

If the moon disappeared one day,
how long would it take you to notice?

really, truly notice?
how many dark nights
would it take
for you to no longer think:
"Maybe I'm not looking right,
I'll try again tomorrow."

After you scoured the stars
and came back empty-handed,

how would you feel?

When the wolves no longer howl,
When the moths can't find their way,
When the eyes of the cats no longer shimmer,

When birdsong begins at midnight,
When children clamor for ice cream in April
When cicadas hum midday,

You would feel like the summer sun
scorching the streets below in grief
crying out for her other half
that provides what she cannot.
