Work Text:
Dazai couldn't say that he was bored often. At least not in the usual "i have nothing to do" boredom. What he felt was too bone-deep. Didn't count. That's all besides the point, though.
He didn't get bored often.
Often did not mean never.
But usually his boredom came when he was doing paperwork. And that was resolved by doodling on the page or on his hand or… anywhere, really. He didn't keep track of how many times Mori's scolded him for carving cartoonish figures out of his desk. Who would, honestly? And Mori didn't appreciate him doodling anywhere during work, it seemed. So that's another point for "why should I care what he says".
Besides the point! Again!
What was up with him today… geez.
Anyway, as per usual, he was doodling. Just some nice incomprehensible symbols that might serve nicely to freak Mori out later. How amusing would that be? Very!
It wasn't as amusing to Dazai when he was the one freaking out.
One of the symbols wasn't… random. It was accidentally a demon or angel or — who knows! Dazai absolutely did not know what this man was. Sure, they looked like a normal human being but come on! Everyone knows that people don't glow like that, nor do they appear out of nowhere in a puff of snow white feathers.
… Which were still on the floor. And Dazai would certainly have to clean them up later. Fuck.
Well now he couldn't tell whether to be more annoyed that he'd have to clean his office or freaked out that a freaky supernatural thing is standing on the other end of his desk. Now that was amusing.
At least he wasn't bored anymore.
Oh. And the thing moved apparently.
Tilting their head to the side, Dazai could almost feel his head start to hurt. Why couldn't they have just been a damned statue? He would take that over an actual moving thing any day.
"Usually…" they spoke, voice gravelly and almost… mumbled? As if not oftentimes used. Dazai could guess why. "People have a tendency to speak to me the moment I appear."
Ah. Right. Any demon-angel-creature would probably be bombarded with wishes or demands or whatever people are wanting these days the moment they were summoned. At least when it was an intentional summoning. And what was Dazai meant to do now, really? Apologise? He'd probably get eaten or something, and that does not seem like a comfortable way to go out.
And whoever had to clean it up would probably find a way to torture him in the afterlife if he left such a mess behind.
Boo!
Though, instead of actually thinking through a proper wish or getting Mori or apologising or whatever Dazai should've done… the moment he saw the beings mouth open again, he blurted out probably the dumbest wish he could've; "Can you take my pain away forever?"
It… was childish. A man like him should've had something better to say. Not that.
And who knows what the consequences would be for such a monumental wish. An eternity without pain…? Probably would lose his sight — which was already going out, to be fair — or have his emotions taken away too — which he actually wouldn't mind — or he'd have to sacrifice somebody — like Chuuya. That'd work. He'd see if this dude would take Chuuya as a fair trade.
"That's all?" They almost sounded… amazed? Like they expected something more? I mean, Dazai could've asked him to murder somebody. That's a thing he could do. And Mori would probably have liked that more than what he actually wished for.
Perhaps he won't tell Mori about any of this. Nobody has to know that he asked for no more aches and migraines and strains and — fuck. He fucked up so bad.
They didn't seem to mind. In fact… Dazai actually couldn't feel the aches in his ribs that he swore were there just moments ago. Fuck, fuck, fuck, what's the price? "What do you w—"
The being cut him off, "nothing." So… simple? Or was this a trick. Because if it was, Dazai swore to everything holy that he'd kill this thing. "That is the simplest wish I have received in well over a millennia. Providing for a boy with a short lifespan ahead of him is nothing short of a gift for myself."
Huh…?
"Is there any more you'd like, boy?" Of course not? Why would — who just did that shit? Dazai couldn't think of a single soul who would do something so selfless without a second though. Without wanting more.
Dazai could only shake his head in response. He truly… did not know what to say. He couldn't say anything.
But they smiled simply. It was… dare he say, nice to be shown such softness for once. If he could count it as that. And then they were gone. So simple…
And he didn't hurt for once in a long, long time. Perhaps it was bedtime.
