Chapter Text
Toby Fox had been in the basement for six days and eighteen hours.
Pages upon pages of GML script were displayed on the screen of his computer, a mocking spectacle of his months of nonstop work, and yet still somehow unfinished. His eyes stung. His hands trembled from starvation. In those six days, he had yet to drink something other than gas station coffee or Powerade Mountain Berry Blast, also known as the worst flavor of sports drink. Seriously, who even likes the blue flavors? Only sociopaths do. At least that's what Toby thought, as repeatedly drinking Powerade for 162 agonizing hours straight was torture regardless of the flavor.
He decided to switch tabs to FL studio. Maybe that would ease his exhausted mind, Toby thought. Maybe making melodies for just a few minutes could calm him down. Weakly moving his mouse to the top of his screen, he saved the script tabs and closed them, leaving his computer open on the home page. His desktop wallpaper was that of his family. He wasn't even sure if they were alive anymore, as he hadn't seen them since Chapter 3 started being developed. It's not like he can leave the house anyhow. If the Deltarune fans found out where he lived, another tirade of protesters, yelling, conspiracy theories, and noise outside his doorstep would commence. "When does the next chapter come out? Does Gaster appear on screen this time? Toby, can you give me your filthy sweaty stinky socks so I can take a big luscious scrumptious whiff at them?" The important questions every fan wants to know. At least that's what happened the last time, when the South Americans doxed him.
As he booted up FL Studio and loaded in his last save, he felt a sudden revitalizing energy flow through his arteries, as if he'd suddenly got three full nights of good quality sleep and went to the gym. Filled with determination, he loaded up the sample on a new FruitySlicer channel, and started chopping it up. Even as he edited the synths and drums, the energy only kept getting stronger. Stronger to a painful degree. He could feel pins and needles on his feet and the tips of his fingers, spreading out toward his hands and arms, and even though Toby wished to stop his body was moving automatically. He found himself physically unable to halt editing the boss fight track for Friend Inside Me.
Sample after sample. Beat after beat. Sound effect after excruciating sound effect. He couldn't take it anymore.
Until a blinding white flash knocked him back from his chair.
When Toby awoke, he found himself in a soft, fluffy white surface. He was no longer in pain. The energy flowing through him had stabilized, and he felt a newfound source of power. Observing his surroundings, he could find elegantly sculpted stone pillars with vibrant plant green ivy vines wrapped around them. Soft crepuscular sunlight filtered through the air, as the weatherless climate above the clouds finally brought peace to his exhausted mind. Standing up, he noticed his vestments. A laurel wreath on his head, a flowing purple or white chiton, and a chlamys covered his now-divine body.
Somewhere in Heaven, Zeus felt a disturbance in the natural order of things.
Apollo had fallen.
Toby Fox is now the God of Music.
