Work Text:

The gala was a wondrous event. Bright, rich… and very loud. Elliot was tugging at the collar of his shirt as his father was talking to some business partners. The music and the crowd was making Elliot uneasy. He was able to feel the bass through his shoes. Elliot tugged at his bowtie anxiously as he looked around the room.

The lights were bright and the chandeliers made that impossible to ignore. Elliot's eyes finally landed on the drink bar a small distance away. Elliot slipped away from his father and started making his way over to it, slightly dancing to the music even though it wasn't exactly his style.

Several minutes and two songs later, Elliot finally reached the bar and ordered a water. The bartender just grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and handed it over.

"Thanks." Elliot croaked, opening the bottle and taking a sip. He sat at the bar and just existed for a bit, daydreaming about something back at the pizzeria. He eventually finished the water bottle and threw it toward the neareset trash can. Elliot smiled slightly as he made the shot. "First try." Elliot chuckled to himself. He leaned on his arms before a pair of hands came over his eyes.

"Guess who!" A familiar voice giggled. Elliot gently grabbed one hand, running his fingers over the skin. There was an ace of spades ring on the index finger.

"Chance?" Elliot asked, almost too quiet to be heard. The hands came down instantly and Chance plopped next to Elliot at the bar.

"You're getting good at this." Chance praised, their smile wide and cocky.

"You're wearing your signature ring." Elliot commented through a small chuckle.

"I thought you weren't gonna notice." Chance snickered.

"You're an idiot." Elliot muttered with a smile.

"You're just smart." Chance retorted, poking Elliot's shoulder. The pair kept laughing before the music of the volume got just a bit louder and Chance brightened, their golden tooth shining in the light. "Come on." He insisted, pulling Elliot off of the bar stool.

"Woah!" Elliot exclaimed as Chance dragged him to the dance floor. Others were already dancing but Chance managed to get Elliot to a clear space, their glasses reflecting Elliot's surprised expression.

The music was upbeat and excitable and Chance matched it perfectly. He twirled and spun Elliot around, Elliot needing to close his eyes so he didn't get dizzy. Chance pulled Elliot close, making the pair chest to chest. Chance spun around with Elliot close, Elliot laughing nervously.

"Chance!" Elliot shouted, voice tight with anxiety. "I have two left feet!"

"Doesn't seem like it to me!" Chance laughed in reply, grabbing Elliot's hand and twirling him around again. Chance let go of Elliot's hand and Elliot came to a stop after a few more spins. Elliot had to stand still for a moment to make the dizziness go away before he looked at Chance.

Chance was spinning on his heels, dancing like he wasn't in the middle of a crowded floor. Chance grabbed their hat and flung it up in the air. When it came down, Chance managed to get it to land on its rim on the back of their hand. Their fedora rolled up that arm, across their shoulders, and down the other arm where Chance caught the brim with their fingers. They put their hat back on and looked at Elliot with sunnies that slid down their nose. Elliot's heart raced a bit as he looked back at Chance.

Chance's eyes were gold.

Bright, brilliant gold.

"Your eyes." Elliot said, gesturing with his hand.

"What about them?" Chance replied, standing upright again while slightly panting.

"They changed color." Elliot stated. "They're gold."

Chance took off his sunnies and tucked them into the left breast pocket of his suit before he held out a hand to Elliot. "Can't help it. It happens when get my hands on a jackpot." He commented, cheeks going rosy. Elliot flushed red entirely.

"You jerk!" Elliot exclaimed, thumping one of his feet like an upset rabbit. "I thought you didn't even like me!"

"I thought you didn't like me." Chance admitted, getting a bit closer to Elliot.

"I've liked you for years!" Elliot responded, covering his face in complete embarrassment. "I just- I thought you were out of my league!" Chance got up to him and gently pried Elliot's hands down from his face. As soon as Elliot looked at Chance, Chance leaned forward and placed a kiss on Elliot's cheek before pulling back.

"That proof enough for you?" Chance said, their smile softening into a gentle crease in their expression. Elliot stammered before Chance grabbed his hands again, pulling him into another dance. Elliot stared as Chance spun him around, their grip on his hands firm but gentle. Elliot eventually softened, smiling back as his face burned. Chance just kept watching Elliot's expression, their eyes still a soft, glittering gold.

Jackpot.
