Work Text:
You were the new student at Shiratorizawa, which would have been fine if you were Japanese. You were from New York City, born and raised. You were used to the small, two bedroom apartment with your family. Loud noises coming from the open fire escape window, busy streets at every turn. That was your life, until your mothers job sent her to Japan, and the Miyagi prefecture.
“Dad! I'm leaving for school.” you yelled up the stairs, while slinging your bag over your shoulder. Crinkling your crisp Shiratorizawa uniform. You were starting your 3rd year, the American equivalent of senior year, knowing absolutely no one, and barely any Japanese. What a great first day of school.
“Ok, Y/N, try to make some friends, I know this is difficult, but please.” your father responded. Probably busy upstairs unpacking some of the stuff you moved from your apartment.
You shut the door of your new home. It was much larger than your old two bedroom in New York. But there was no time to think about that. You started on your way to your new school, trying to memorize the route so you could stop using google maps.
Once you made it to school, you headed to the front desk and attempted something reminiscent of japanese, “Hi, im new to school and i need my schedule.” the lady at the front desk just smiled and handed you your schedule. Already being able to tell who you were because of the bad japanese, or maybe it was because you just looked like you didn't belong among the other students.
You made your way to class 3B, and introduced yourself to the teacher, explaining who you were. Then you introduced yourself to the class. Saying, “Hello, my name is Y/N L/N, please call me Y/N.” in shaky japanese. Already feeling out of place among the other students. You rushed to your seat, in between two boys, one looking like a lanky lizard with unnaturally bright red hair and a boy with olive hair and was built like a brick wall.
Sinking into your seat, the lizard boy leaned over to you, whispering, “So… where are you from, clearly not japan.” At the last 3 words your face heated, you responded, saying, “America, New York City to be exact.” Sinking even deeper into your seat.
“You hear that Ushiwaka… New York!” Lizard boy leaned over you. Brick boy, or Ushiwaka replied, “Yes I heard.” sounding unnaturally formal. “Come on Ushi…” Lizard boy groaned, “Does that mean you can tutor me in English?” He asked, returning his attention to you. “I can help you with Japanese and you can help me with English.. Deal?” You thought for a moment before responding, “Sure.. but-” “Great! Meet me at lunch.” You only nodded, maybe school wouldn’t be that bad after all.
