The Trade

Summary:

Ilya gets traded due to concerns about his conditioning. He has half a season to shape up... or to enjoy the time off. Shane knows which of those options he hopes Ilya will choose, but he's not telling.

Chapter 1: Day 0

Notes:

Obligatory "I don't know anything about hockey" disclaimer. I barely even know anything about Heated Rivalry. Sorry if I've gotten any details wrong!

This is a weight gain kink fic in which public fat-shaming, media speculation, etc. plays a significant role. Please don't read if that makes you uncomfortable!

Chapter Text

BREAKING: Ilya Rozanov traded to Quebec

In what might be the most shocking Major League Hockey trade since the historic 1983 swap of Bradley Mitchell for Larry Edwards, Boston Raiders captain Ilya Rozanov will be moving from Massachusetts to join the Quebec City Géants, hockey fans learned this morning. In return, Boston will receive three junior players.

Not only is a midseason trade highly unusual, but this one has hockey aficionados scratching their heads; Rozanov is widely considered a generational talent, and, beside Montreal’s Shane Hollander, one of two players in the running for this year’s MLH MVP Award. As captain, Rozanov has led the Raiders to the playoff finals twice, and this season was shaping up to be a third round, until this morning.

“I truly don’t get it,” remarked ESPN commentator Jason Whitman in an interview just hours after the trade was first reported. “How the fuck – pardon my French – did Boston fumble Rozanov? It’s like… letting go of Gretzky at his peak.”

Whitman is not alone in his confusion. Under the trending #roztrade tag on X (formerly Twitter), posts range from stunned denial to conspiratorial assertions. “[I]sn’t it a bit early for April Fool’s??!” questioned user @admiral_admirer. “this is BULLSHIT!!! CANNOT be real!!!” added @bosroz.

Raiders general manager Adam Pratchett has begun to receive death threats. When questioned about the rationale for the trade, he had this to say: “As we all know, Ilya is a fantastic player. But we have had concerns about his conditioning for some time. We have made the decision that we are confident will best position Boston to win this year’s championships.”

Pratchett’s complaint about Rozanov’s conditioning, while harsh, should come as no surprise to MLH fans, who have watched as his weight has fluctuated severely over the past several years. Sources report that he began this season at a whopping 245 pounds (111 kg). Rozanov is well-known among Raiders fans for his love of Boston food, including local institution Mike’s Pastry, whose wall hosts a collection of Polaroid snapshots of the star player on his various visits to the shop over the course of his career. Fans online have lovingly – or not-so-lovingly – pointed out Rozanov’s ballooning form in the progression of photos.

Still, despite his struggles keeping to a disciplined diet, Rozanov is undoubtedly one of the best players the MLH has seen in decades. Time will tell whether the Raiders come to regret this trade as the worst in MLH history.
