Chapter Text
Light brown eyes opened slightly at the first ray of sun coming through a slit in the curtains. This ray of sun was gentle, warm, and politely asking the person on the bed to wake up for a great start to his new high school career. This person, a boy, blinked a few times and sighed, turning around and facing away from the morning greeting. The sun was insistent though, and the one ray of light widened and grew bigger until the curtains, which through no fault of their own had been carelessly closed the previous night, could barely contain the start of a new day.
’Madness.’ The boy thought. He tried to sigh again, but that just ended in a yawn that made his eyes water. He rubbed at them, trying to get some of the sleep out so he could look at his clock. He groaned when he realized he’d woken up before his alarm had time to scream at him. At the same time, it was too late to go back to sleep, so now he was in this limbo of being too awake in bed.
His eyes wandered to the ephemera that was on the same bed side table as his clock. Postcards and pictures that had not been put away since being put on there.
“~Hiroseee!…” Read the first one, “Can’t wait to see you in high school! Maybe we’ll be in the same class! - Takeuchi”
”Thank you for making middle school so fun, Aiki-kun! Make sure to come visit me so my mom can make us a special dinner after the graduation ceremony. - Oomori”
“Hirose-kun, I would like to say to you that your friendship has meant the world to me. I mean, my world is not just you. You do mean a lot to me, but I mean that as far as friendships go and as boys I would like to be friends with me IN this world you are at the top. What I mean to say is that you are my top boy. Actually, maybe I can just say to you that I have always lik-” The rest of the message had been lost due to someone dropping their water bottle on the card, but you could still make out the signature from Matsumura.
The now named Hirose Aiki stared at these cards for a second longer… and then suddenly bolted from bed with a look of pure determination.
“Right!” He said firmly, “Today is the first day of high-school! I can’t just lay in bed like it’s not one of the most important days of my life!”
He ran the few feet needed to reach his window where the previously offensive rays of sun had come through and fully opened the curtains. The sun beamed on his face and made his eyes, now fully open, shine bright. Hirose laughed to himself. The world was greeting him and he was going to high school with his friends. There would be new people to meet! New people meant new friendships.
He nodded to the world outside, then looked at the mirror on his desk. His smile grew wider.
’Go for it, Hirose-kun!’ He thought and ran downstairs to have breakfast before his mom could make him take a bath first.

“O-O-MO-RI!” Hirose yelled as he ran to tackle-head-lock his childhood friend.
Other students walking the same way turned to look at the pair, but kept on going as if normal. Rowdy boys and their antics were not a strange sight for them.
”Ooph! Oh, hey Aiki.” Oomori greeted. “You sure seem full of energy as always. Excited for the first day?”
Hirose let go and pumped his fist. “Yeah! We’re going to have so much fun! And I bet you Takeuchi will be late for homeroom! I hope we’re in the same class, it’s going to be so funny!”
Oomori smiled, “That sounds very possible.”
Both boys kept the conversation going all the way to the school which ranged from what the classes would be like in high school, to the possible adventures they could have that they had seen on T.V. Their excited what-ifs kept going until they had to be separated for the entrance ceremony due to their last names unfortunately not starting with the same letter.
Hirose excitedly looked around to see how many people he could recognize. There were definitely a lot of his old middle school friends here! He was not exactly shy when it came to greeting people, and making friends was a skill set he was particularly good at, but having his old school mates around would always make everything easier.
The ceremony started and a teacher welcomed them to the new year of school and gave a special welcome to the first years. Then she introduced the principal, a very old man, who began a speech he had probably said for the last 60 years. Of course, Hirose did not know how old he actually was, but he wouldn’t be surprised if he was close to his nineties!
”Uh… ahem!” The old principal started, “Welcome old and new students. I hope your break was fulfilling and you had experiences that were both educational and exciting. Here at Hoshimi High School, we value students who have good morals, good attitudes, and good grades! Ahem! Remember, us teachers were once students too, including me!” The principal chuckled, “ Why, I remember when I was young…”
And so, the new students of the aforementioned Hoshimi High School were introduced to their principal and his style of school meetings. Mainly that they would take forever and they would hear all about their principal’s youth. The old students had mentally prepared for this and were happily daydreaming since the old man had first cleared his throat.
Hirose swore that the forced smiles on the other teachers had been practiced beforehand, and he could see other students looking directly at those same teachers, telepathically pleading them to interrupt the principal so they could actually start their first day of high-school before night time.
Given that this meeting would probably take much longer, Hirose took to look around at the other students again, and he immediately saw in the corner of his eye the tallest student around “Nobu!” He thought happily, and waited for him to look at his direction to give him a friendly wave. Nobu did, his scary face softening at his friend. At the same, before he looked away, Hirose could not help but to look at the people that were in his direct line of sight.
…. And then his breath caught in his throat.
A second after he gasped to get oxygen flowing to his brain again. He turned around quickly and said brain was trying to think about what just happened. Hirose turned slightly around again and…
Well, he could not think why he had specifically reacted the way he did. There was a boy there, and though Nobu made everyone look tiny, Hirose could tell this boy was taller than himself. This new person had black, messy hair, narrow eyes, and was dressed like everyone else. Of course he was, he was a student here. Could he be a first year too? Or maybe second year because of his tallness?
There was nothing specifically special about him, but… Hirose did realize, after everyone had been dismissed to go to their respective homerooms, that his eyes had unusually drifted to this boy more times than was necessary.
Hirose shook his head aggressively and tried to get the weird feeling out of his mind. Welp! Whoever he was, if they did cross paths then Hirose would simply do what he does best! He would be friendly and open to any good interaction they might have! After all, that was one of the things he was mostly looking forward to for his high school career! New friends and new adventures!
‘Go for it, Hirose-kun!’ He thought again, and headed to the board where he would know what class he would be in.
