Chapter 1: Bag

Chapter Text

It had been a few weeks since they started school at Hopes Peak Academy. Obviously Hopes Peak was far from the “normal” high school experience, but by Mukuro’s standards it had been a fairly unremarkable start to the year. No attacks on the school, nobody trying to kill her or her sister (yet), and nobody trying to capture her for information. It was strangely…peaceful.

She spent almost all of her time with her sister of course. Looking after her was the least she could do being the older sister and all, but she did rarely have time to herself. It was during one of these alone times where she ran into Makoto on a walk around campus. He seemed to be wandering around aimlessly with a distressed look on his face. She considered offering to ask him what was wrong but she decided against it. Nobody would want to bother with her help anyways, all she was good at was killing.

At that moment Makoto suddenly turned around and noticed her staring at him. She looked away quickly but it was too late.

“Oh, hi Mukuro! I didn’t realize you were standing there,” he laughed a little as he said this.
“Say, have you seen my bag anywhere? I left it next to me while I was studying but it seems to have vanished completely!”

“I’m sorry I don’t remember seeing any bags around,” truth be told she hadn’t have been paying much attention to the objects around her as she walked. A break was coming up after tomorrow and a lot of the students had already left for vacation or home, which left little around.
“Aw that’s unfortunate. Thanks for letting me know though,” he kept smiling through all of this even though he was clearly still distressed.
Mukuro felt a strange attachment to that smile, as if she had to protect it. This was new however, she felt as if she wanted to protect it instead of feeling obligated to like with her sister.

“I-if you would like I could come help you look for it,” she didn’t even notice what she was saying until after she said it and started blushing profusely. Spending time with Makoto was not her plan for today and she was even more worried with what he would think of her after she asked.
“Really?! I would love that Mukuro!” his grin grew even larger which only amplified the flush on Mukuro’s face.

They spent the next half hour walking around campus looking for it. Mukuro was already not good at conversations, and that wasn’t helped with the embarrassment she felt being around Makoto. This confused her even more since she should be a stone cold soldier who never showed emotion, but she couldn’t help herself around him. He didn’t seem to mind her inexperience anyways and would keep chatting even when she didn’t give a very detailed response.
“For being the Ultimate Lucky Student you seem to be running into a lot of bad luck lately,”
He laughed a little and started scratching the back of his neck, “Ha, yeah I guess that title doesn’t always come with good luck. You should’ve seen some of the situations I’ve gotten in!”
They entered the gym just as he was starting talking about the time he almost got knocked off a balcony by Mondo when he spotted his bag up against the wall.
“And then-oh there’s my bag! I’ve got no idea how it ended up here,” he ran over and slung it on his shoulder
“Thanks for accompanying me Mukuro. I really enjoyed talking with you,”
She tried to stop her blush but to no avail, “O-oh it was nothing. I enjoyed it as well,” she noticed the light coming through the windows getting more orange
“It seems to be getting late, I should head back to my dorm,”
“Oh I could um walk you back there if you’d like!”
She didn’t know how it was possible but her face got even hotter, “Well um I-if it’s ok with you..”

Mukuro couldn’t say that she didn’t enjoy her time with Makoto and felt a little saddened that it had to end.
“Thank you for your time today Makoto,”
“Oh thank you Mukuro! You made looking for my bag a lot more enjoyable,”
There’s that damn smile again. She found it somewhat endearing that he was smiling through all that happened today.
“You know Mukuro I’m uh not doing anything tomorrow would you maybe want to hang out again?”
She swore she could see a faint blush on his face but that didn’t matter, she was shocked that he was asking to hangout with her of all people. I mean surely he would prefer to hang out with Sayaka or maybe Kyoko, she’d seen him talk with both of them a lot at lunch. He was probably pitying her but she can’t say she’d like to pass up the opportunity.
“O-oh yeah Junko is out at a shoot anyways this week so I’m free,”
“Alright, could I meet you here at noon tomorrow?”
“That would be great,”
“Well then see you tomorrow!”
He smiled and waved as he walked away. It was almost surreal for her, being able to have something to look forward to in her life.

She couldn’t help but smile a bit at that.
