Work Text:

It was almost two in the morning when Yuji came back to the dorms. He was so sluggish and tired, the mission went on longer than he anticipated. It was his first solo mission in a while and he thought it would be a quick finish, unfortunately he was wrong. As he took off his shoes and placed them by the door, he was surprised to see Megumi sleeping peacefully at the kitchen table.

Trying not to disturb him, Yuji tried to sneak his way past the sleeping boy. Megumi woke up with a grumble as he rubbed his eyes to greet him. “Oh you’re back. I’m glad you’re alright.” He was so sleepy that his voice was more hoarse than normal. He got up from the chair and walked over to Yuji to inspect him properly. This was their routine. If one of them came late from a solo mission, the other would inspect their entire body to ensure that they’re truly alright with minimal injuries. There was no arguing about it either.

Megumi checked for bruises and carefully examined his face for any new scars. Luckily, there was only slight bruising on his ribs and nothing too major. Megumi worried anyway. After a successful inspection, he went over to the fridge and pulled out multiple containers of food. “Go wash up, I’ll heat up dinner.” Yuji went to wash without arguing and after he was finished, he patiently waited for Megumi to finish heating up their food.

Megumi had this strange habit of only eating with Yuji no matter how late it was. If Yuji was late, he would try his best to stay awake and greet him at the door and have dinner with him. He claims that it was just to make sure he actually ate before bed, but Yuji knew that his favorite boy was just worried about him and tried to calm his nerves by himself. He set their plates down and watched Yuji basically devour his food. His head was resting in his hands as he watched him eat. Despite Yuji eating sloppily, Megumi looked at him like hung all of the stars in the sky. He is completely whipped. Yuji encouraged him to start eating too and two of them finished their meals in a comfortable silence.

Yuji always did the dishes after their meals because he would feel bad at leaving Megumi alone in the dorms. Even though he’s not physically alone, he still had Nobara, he tended to keep to himself until Yuji returned. After everything was cleaned up, the pair headed to Yuji’s room. It was dark and cold since he hasn’t been in it for a few days, the perfect room to cuddle in. Yuji scooped Megumi up into his arms and carried him to bed. He gently placed him under the covers and darted to the other side of the bed to bring him close to his chest. He really liked holding Megumi close to him because it meant that Megumi was letting some of his walls down and being vulnerable and Yuji absolutely loved that.

“Thank you for always waiting up for me ‘gumi, I know how sleepy you get.” Yuji smiled to himself. He was stroking his soft raven hair, gently massaging his scalp. “Quit thanking me, you’d do the same for me.” A little shocked at his admission, Megumi tucked his head further into his neck to try and muffle his voice. Yuji couldn’t stay still because his hair was tickling him. He liked when Megumi got all clingy. He would act so cute and shy. All disoriented and fiddling with whatever he could find in his hands. He would try to seem as normal as possible, but Yuji could see right through him. “Let’s sleep in, we have a free day tomorrow. I want to spend that time with you.” Yuji said as he cuddled him closer. “And maybe, if you want, I could take you on that picnic date I promised.” He said softly. Yuji only got soft whenever he wanted to do something with Megumi, almost as if he was afraid of rejection. It was sweet, Megumi thought.

They were originally supposed to go on their picnic date last week, but those stupid missions got in the way. Yuji always wanted to take him out and dote on him, but he lacked courage for a while. He was scared Megumi would reject him and that their relationship would change for the worse. Luckily for him, Megumi felt the same way and started showing more sides of himself to Yuji. It was as if he was opening up his heart and handing it to Yuji, it was his responsibility to care for it and he would do it proudly.

“I’d like that.” Megumi lifted his head and placed his hands on Yuji’s chest to feel his heartbeat. “I’m glad you’re safe and that you came back.” He paused for a minute while trying to find the right words. “Back to me.” His voice trembled at the last part as he traced circles on the boy’s skin. “I’ll always come back to you. That I can promise.” Megumi finally made eye contact as he grabbed both sides of his face and pulled him into a gentle kiss. It was soft and full of love. Something shifted that night to where it felt like they were the only people in the world. The kiss had so much meaning to it. It was almost a confession. As their lips parted, Megumi left a trace of kisses on his cheek. The kisses were saying, “I love you”, “Don’t ever leave me”.

They weren’t the kind of people to use pet names, but Yuji would always say “Megumi you’re such a sweetheart” whenever they were being clingy with each other. He wasn’t teasing, that’s how he truly felt. After their spree of soft kisses, they fell asleep with Megumi draped across Yuji’s body and Yuji holding him like he was made of glass. They cared for each other so deeply and worried over each other. Their mutual understanding of one another is what made their bond stronger and allowed their feelings to grow. They would mainly express their affection for one another with words and dangerous risks in order to save each other, but that’s what makes them special. They were each other’s person and had a connection that felt deeper than love.
