Work Text:
Mondo groans as he wakes up. Since when was the last time he slept like that? It had to be before he started the carpentry business. He looks around till he finds the bedroom clock.
8:56 am.
It was almost nine o’clock and Taka didn’t wake him up? That was strange. Usually his partner woke him up an hour prior, as he was the early bird. But he didn’t.
Mondo gets out of bed and stretches. A smell of something yummy registers in his nose. And then everything starts coming together. He laughs at himself. He was a moron.
He throws on a tank top before leaving the bedroom. He sees Taka at the stove making breakfast. He goes over, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend’s waist. He kisses the back of Taka’s neck.
“Morning Mondo!” Taka smiles. He flips the pancakes he was working on. “And Happy Birthday!”
“Is this breakfast for me?” Mondo chuckles with a crooked grin.
Taka nods. “And don’t worry. I told Takemaru and Misaki you were either gonna be late or not come in. It’s your day after all!”
Mondo hums. “I wouldn’t mind being with you all day.”
The two laugh before Mondo pulls away. Taka needed to finish cooking so he took it upon himself to set the table. Plates, silverware, a cup of orange juice for his love. Taka also already started a cup of coffee for him. He happily took it.
Taka finishes with the food and plates it. Pancakes, omelets, and bacon. Mondo thanks him with a kiss on the lips before sitting down.
“Well, it’s summer now.” Taka smiles, taking a bite of his omelet. He makes sure to chew and swallow before he starts talking again. “I’m going to start the summer Kendo classes for kids in a few days.”
“So I can get you all to myself all day? Great.” Mondo grins, stuffing his mouth with his food. Taka was such a great cook.
Mondo’s mind wanders to when they first met. He accidentally bumped into the man but he didn’t notice so Taka started berating him for not paying attention. That started a small fight. He didn’t even know his name till he arrived at his old apartment and looked at his wrist.
“I can’t believe we used to butt heads whenever met.” Mondo mutters, taking a sip of his coffee.
Taka nods. “It was only natural. We were complete strangers with one another who happened to have a negative first impression. The fact that we both thought we would never have a soulmate didn’t help.”
Mondo scoffs. “Dumbest fuckin’ thing. Not telling us we’re soulmates till we met.”
“But we are together now.” Taka sets down his fork and places his hand on Mondo’s. “We were able to get past our differences-“
“You almost died in the sauna.”
Taka turns away, blushing. “Yes…but it was a milestone in our relationship! And I wouldn’t change it any other way!”
Mondo nods. He takes Taka’s hand and kisses it. Why would he want to change anything? He was here, with his soulmate, the man he truly loved. And that was what made his birthday special. Nothing would make him happier.
