Work Text:
Velvette made outfits more beautiful than the stars.
It was what Val used to remember the stars, actually. Sure, there were the Hellborns who were allowed to go topside and sent pictures on Sinstigram of what blue skies looked like, what the nights were like, but that wasn’t the same. The stars those demons took pictures of weren’t the same as the ones Val remembered. He remembered being to see a lot more of them.
The fabric wasn’t filled with accurate depictions. It was the feel of looking at the sky, no lights from anywhere else to block the view, and seeing nothing but the infinite void filled with sparkles. In life, Val had spent so much time on the roof of his van staring at them. He wouldn’t have considered himself a stargazer. He didn’t know the different constellations or whatever. Val just liked to look.
“What?” Velvette asked him as she twirled a finger. The model in front of her twirled as well.
“Was just checking in.”
“Better be while in a good mood.”
“Bitch, did I sound like I was in a bad mood?”
Velvette didn’t bother to respond, but she didn’t tell him to leave, so Val stayed. He had somewhere to be, but he could take a few more minutes to stare at the shimmering effect on the skirt. It was enough to almost make him forget about the model wearing it.
“You can’t have her. You didn’t return the last one in a good condition.”
“I wasn’t asking to borrow anyone, babydoll. Believe it or not.”
“Okay, I won’t. You can’t have her.”
Val let Velvette get back to work. He sent her more effusive praise in a text. She could be appalled that she’d chased him off while he appreciated her work later.
