Chapter 1: First Day

Chapter Text

“Monster High is the place where you can be yourself!” “No judgement, just acceptance!” “Everyone’s welcome at Monster High!” Those were many of the common phrases associated with the ‘outstanding’ high school every monster around Rosco was talking about.

Rosco was bullied heavily during middle school, his one sided gray face made him a target for weird stares and plenty of rumors. Maybe a generic school wasn’t for him. One generic day during middle school, he walked into his local store hoping to score a great lunch. As he passed by the cashier stand something special caught his eye. He stopped for a moment staring at a rack of magazines. There, on the front of one of the magazines near the top shelf was a headline, “A judgement free school, all is welcome at Monster High.”

He didn’t know why the magazine called to him, but yet he grabbed it and shoved it in his bag before actually getting what he came for. Later that day, he did more research and saw students who looked like him in photos, “odd.” That was the day he decided he was going to get in.

– PRESENT DAY –

The loud bell rang a sharp sound before the headmage’s voice came booming on the loud speakers. “Welcome first year students, please report to your first period. Your designated classes should be listed on the paper you received when entering. If needing guidance, please seek the front office or a returning student. Thank you, and have a wonderful first day.”

Rosco grumbled covering his ears at the sudden sharp sound before looking down at the paper he received.

“Geometry.. Should be upstairs.” He mumbled to himself, heading up the large stairwell at the end of the hallway. Lucky enough, his first class was right at the top of the stairs.

Rosco took a deep breath before heading inside. Clutching his bag, he headed for one of the seats in the back, not really looking at the classmates already seated in some of the chairs.

He made sure to take a seat where no one sat directly next to him and before he knew it, the teacher was already introducing themself and beginning the lecture.

“Take out a notebook and a pencil, note taking is required to pass.” The teacher said, not even looking at the students.

Before Rosco could even reach into his bag, he received a tap on the shoulder from someone behind him. He took a deep breath before glancing back, ready to see whoever tapped him.

Behind him sat a guy with red hair and a side ponytail, it was a bit of a mess because you could tell he was in a rush but it suited him perfectly. On the tips of his red hair was a hue of orange, and on his face was a pair of round glasses. He had clear skin and slight pigment of blush on his cheeks. Rosco hated to admit how pretty he was.

“Ah.. Excuse me, do you have a pencil I could borrow?” The guy spoke. ‘Who doesn’t have a pencil on the first day of school..’ Rosco thought. Begrudgingly, he took out a pencil and handed it to the guy.

“Thank you.” The guy said, before smiling a little.

Rosco quickly turned around before taking out the rest of his supplies. As class continued, all he could do was doodle and think about the guy behind him. How could he not have noticed someone so stunning to the eye?

Before he knew it, the bell was already ringing notifying the students they had 15 minutes of passing period. As Rosco began packing up his things, the guy tapped him on the shoulder again.

“Here’s your pencil.. Err.. What's your name?” He spoke, tilting his head a little to the side.

“..Rosco, Rosco Graves.” Rosco said, taking his pencil from the guy’s hands.

“Rosco, what a pretty name. My name is Malim Cendari, it’s nice to meet you.” Malim smiled, before grabbing his tote bag. “What’s your next class?”

“Err..” Rosco quickly examined his schedule, chalking up the ‘pretty name’ as just a regular compliment. “Intro to Biteology.”

“We have separate classes then.. Why don’t you give me your number? That way we can keep in touch!” Malim smiled, already pulling out his phone. In some way you could tell he knew Rosco was gonna say yes.

“Sure.” He took Malim’s phone, quickly typing his number in before giving it back to him.

Malim took his phone from Rosco’s hand before waving goodbye with a wink. “See you later, Rosco!” he said, heading out the door.

Rosco waved back before quickly packing up the rest of his things and leaving. ‘Malim’.. For some reason he couldn’t get his face out of his head until lunch.
