Chapter 1: Eighth Grade

Chapter Text

Eighth grade was a blur of neon green and royal purple.

Parrot was intelligent, bringing a clever, bright mind along with a loud, playful spirit to every room he walked into. He wore green almost every day, everyone knew it was his signature color.

Whether it a simple sweater or a lousy feather, it was always that same stupid shade of green.

Wifies, on the other hand, moved through the school with a calm, quiet demeanor and an incredible obsession with purple on his clothes.

Both held the top spots in class, but Wifies knew he was smarter than Parrot by a big amount. They were both geniuses, which meant they constantly tried to out-do each other. Every single quiz was a fight for the highest grade, with Parrot always trying to catch up and Wifies smugly staying one step ahead.

They first met right at the beginning of the school year because their lockers were right next to each other. Parrot was having a terrible morning, completely struggling to remember his combination and getting more frustrated by the stupid locker. Wifies noticed him struggling. He leaned over with a calm smile, looked at the lock, and walked Parrot through the unlocking process.

From that morning on, they walked to every single class together. They built a sweet routine.

Every morning, Wifies would wait by those same lockers just to hand Parrot a little snack he bought from the cafeteria. Parrot always appreciated his kind gifts with a smile and a lingering blush on his face. If Parrot forgot his lunch, Wifies gave him half of his without even being asked.

But everything truly changed on a random Tuesday morning. Instead of his usual quiet greeting, Wifies walked right up to Parrot, nervously hiding something behind his back. With a bright red face, he pushed a bunch of purple and green flowers into Parrot's hands.

Wrapped around the stems was a small piece of paper with just a few words written in Wifies' neat, perfect handwriting: Will you be my boyfriend? Wifies stood there silently, completely blushed as he waited for an answer.

It was short, sweet, and the exact moment they officially became a couple. From that morning on, they were completely inseparable, and neither of them could even imagine what it was like to not be together.

“We are going to be together forever, right?” Parrot asked one afternoon. They were sitting on a rusty park bench near the front gate, watching the yellow school buses line up.

The words came out before Parrot could stop them, and he instantly felt a rush of embarrassment. He quickly looked down at his shoes, wishing he hadn't said it out loud. It felt way too serious for a random afternoon, and he was terrified that he had just made things weird between them.

Wifies didn't make fun of him or pull away. Instead, his face went completely soft. He bumped his shoulder gently against Parrot's, giving him a quiet, reassuring smile.

"Yeah, Parrot," Wifies said softly, his voice super steady. "Of course we are."

They had their own close circles of friends that they hung out with during the school day. Parrot was always with Spoke and Theobaldthebird. Wifies spent his time with Kenadian and Wato. Derapchu was friends with both groups, hanging out with both sides so that the two groups always ended up merging into one big crowd at lunch. The cafeteria table was always loud with laughter, a mix of inside jokes and overlapping conversations.

Before the last month of school drew to an end, Parrot and Wifies shared many special moments that belonged only to them.

Since they spent every afternoon taking walks, they got used to the changing weather. On rainy days, Wifies would hold his umbrella completely over Parrot's head. He didn't care if his own right shoulder got totally soaked by the pouring rain. As long as Parrot stayed completely dry, Wifies was perfectly happy. He would just smile at Parrot's dry sweater, ignoring the raindrops dripping down his own arm.

Another time, the school cafeteria baked a fresh batch of giant chocolate chip cookies that everyone loved and fought over. Parrot had been late to the lunch line because he was getting extra help from a teacher. They sold the very last cookie right before his turn. He walked over to his lunch table looking completely disappointed, his head hanging low.

Wifies didn't say a single word. He just quietly slid his own unopened cookie wrapper across the table, stopping it right against Parrot's plastic tray.

"Don't you want it?" Parrot asked, looking up.

"I don't really feel like having sweets today anyway," Wifies lied, trying to sound smooth even though Kenadian and Wato blatantly knew.

Wifies just leaned his head on his hand, watching with a secret smile as Parrot happily tore open the wrapper and took a big bite.

They also had a silly habit of drawing on each other’s notebooks. Since Wifies was the smarter one, his history and math pages were always neat and perfect. But if he left his desk for even two minutes to sharpen a pencil, Parrot would slide over. Using a bright green gel pen, Parrot would sketch messy little stick figures, smiley faces, and tiny hearts all over the margins of Wifies notes.

When Wifies came back, he would look at the green scribbles, look at a blushing Parrot pretending to stare at the whiteboard, and just shake his head.

He never erased a single one of those drawings. He kept every single notebook exactly the way Parrot left them.

Eighth grade was ending and high school was waiting for them in the fall. The final weeks of the school year were going by quickly. Everyone was talking about high school, summer plans, and how eighth grade was almost over.

Parrot and Wifies were making plans to spend every single day of the summer break together, not wasting a single second without each other. Whether it was playing Minecraft together, being at eachothers house, or just calling on Discord.

One day in May, right before the school year officially ended, Wifies asked Parrot to walk outside after the school day was over.

"Let's take a picture," Wifies said. He held up an old instant camera.

"Why? You see me every day" Parrot teased, pushing his hair out of his eyes.

"Just shut up and pose" Wifies smiled. He leaned down, instead of looking at the camera, Wifies turned his head and pressed his lips firmly against Parrot's cheek, right near his mouth. Parrot's face turned bright red, turning into a blushing mess.

The camera clicked. A little square photo slowly slid out the bottom with a quiet buzz. Wifies held the edges, shaking the photo as the black slowly cleared and colors fading in.

There they were, captured in a single moment of time. Parrot’s face was as bright red as a ripe tomato, his eyes wide with shock. Wifies had his pair of lips giving Parrot’s cheek a peck on his soft delicate skin.

It was perfect. they were perfect. What could ever go wrong?

"Keep it" Wifies whispered.

He slipped it into Parrot's hand with a gentle smile on his face.

Parrot looked at him with loving eyes, adoring the brunette’s handsome features.

That was the last time Parrot ever saw him.
