Work Text:

Wednesday slammed her hands down on the small wooden table that had been dragged over to the middle of her and Enid's shared room.

Enid gave a tiny surprised jump but quickly recovered and copied her, challengingly raising one eyebrow but succeed only in making herself look ridiculous.

The two stared deep into each other's eyes from across the table, which was left so little space between them that their noses were practically touching.

"Are you aware of the amount of pure sugar in drinks such as these?" Wednesday asked. Her voice was crisp and deadpan as usual but carried the slightest wave of passion in the heat of the argument.

"And are you aware of how bad coffee tastes?" Enid shot back with a frown. "How can you stand drinking it on a daily basis?"

"Maybe I'm simply less faint-hearted than you," Wedbesday retorted.

"Mhm," Enid scoffed.

A small smile appeared at the corner of her lips and she glanced down at Wednesday's instinctively to find her doing the exact same. The raven might have acted like the coldest person at Nevermore, but she had a soft spot for Enid and didn't mean anything negative she said about her.

Wednesday paced around the simple table and pulled Enid up to her face with a yank of her roommate's hand. Wednesday reached up and Enid felt the cold touch of the raven's fingers brushing her cheek. She was used to it by this point, but a blush still crept over her face.

"I hereby declare a challenge," Wednesday said.

Enid perked up in curiosity, and her girlfriend's hand fell back by her side.

"Wednesday, I swear," she replied, "if you so much as make me take a sip of your coffee-"

"Ah ah ah," Wednesday interrupted. Her finger pointed back in forth, scolding Enid. "Let me finish."

"What is it then?" Enid said, a tease on the tip of her tongue. Her hands clasped together behind her back.

Wednesday picked up the two drinks from the table - one a plain ceramic mug filled with fresh dark coffee and the other a can bursting of neon pink shades and bubble letters.

Her eyes scanned the label of Enid's drink as she lfted it. It surprisingly only contained fifteen extra milliliters compared to the amount in her cup, which she knew by heart.

Wednesday popped open the tab and handed Enid the energy drink. She held her coffee in the other hand firmly by the handle.

"We both try to finish the drink before the other," Wednesday said finally. "The opinion of whoever finishes the entire thing first is correct."

She had no doubt she'd end up victorious, but she wasn't going to gloat about it to Enid just yet.

"So like a chugging challenge?" Enid said, trying not to laugh.

"Whatever you wish to call it," Wednesday replied. She lifted her head.

"No cheating?" Enid asked. Wednesday was known to regularly slip in a dirty trick or two.

Wednesday let out a little breath and shook her head to her girlfriend's comment, confirming it.

Neither were sure what the argument was even about anymore, just where they stood and how desperate they both were to beat each other. Wednesday and Enid both back up a step away from the table and each other. They each ceremoniously set their drinks down on the table and then picked them up again defiantly after Thing nudged the beverages towards their hands.

"Alright," Enid said with a nod. "Uh... when do we start?"

Wednesday didn't give her any warning.

"Now."

Wednesday and Enid quickly lifted their drinks to their lips, Wednesday a little big in the lead, and began to drink them furiously.

Wednesday did so perfectly - not a drop spilled over her clothes. But Enid had more of an issue, and immediately started sputtering even before she had felt the liquid in her mouth

Then came the moment neither roommate was expecting: Wednesday started choking and spitting out her drink in the same manner as Enid. That's when Enid knew something was wrong - not because she couldn't bring herself to take a sip, not because of the taste of coffee on her tongue that never came, but the fact that Wednesday Addams had lost her composure while drinking. She was no doubt fighting with the flavor of a strawberry-lemonade energy brew that wasn't meant for her.

To make matters worse, Enid accidentally took a huge gulp of coffee and dropped the mug at her feet in shock. Much like the raven herself, most of Wednesday's belongings were too sturdy to be broken in a simple incident.

Enid and Wednesday had been so caught up in the competition (and perhaps also staring into each other's eyes) that they hadn't bothered to check if the coffee or can was in their hands. And it was all thanks to one sneaky detached appendage who was innocently flipping through a magazine on Enid's bed.

"THING!" Wednesday and Enid bellowed at the same time. They both lunged for him, but knocked into each other and were forced to watch as Thing made his escape through their enormous split glass window.

"I'm going to murder that..." Wednesday ended her sentence by mumbling a mouthful of insults that Enid didn't quite catch.

Enid couldn't help but chuckle. She knew Thing didn't enjoy conflict between the two of them and was constantly ticked off by their often senseless rivalry (he'd complained about it during a trip out to test hand cream), but she'd never actually thought he'd risk his fingers by pulling something like that on Wednesday.

Wednesday finally stopped grumbling and instead placed a frown on her face.

Enid straightened herself up to hide her amusement at the whole situation. Then she saw the floor next to the table, and her face too dropped.

"Thing..." she muttered.

Wednesday was glad Enid was starting to see her side of things. Dark coffee leaked across the boards, most likely staining them, and the once white tablecloth had turned rather pink.

Enid hadn't even broken her mug - which she was grateful for - but the two still had a lot of cleaning up to do. And that time would be shadowing what could be spent at her chair facing her typewriter.

She didn't blame herself, and she most certainly didn't blame Enid. The cheerful werewolf had evoked some kind of softness in her heart.

No.

This was all on her unfaithful right hand, Thing.

...But maybe it wasn't his fault entirely. Sure, he had switched Wednesday and Enid's drinks and caused the mess in turn, but it had been the fault of the roommates for getting so caught up in their desire to come out on top that had ensured the plan got  followed through with.

She wasn't planning on admitting it out loud to her girlfriend, who would probably shriek in amazement at how far she'd apparently come, but for the first time in a while Wednesday accepted the blame and accepted that winning wasn't always the most important thing.

Five minutes into tidying up the mess they'd made in their dorm room, Wednesday and Enid were making great progress.

Enid didn't mind getting down on the ground and wiping down the floor tiles since streaks of coffee were already leaked through her jeans. Wednesday cleaned the table, washed her mug, and disposed of the energy drink can, the remaining liquid drained all across the floor.

Enid changed into a pair of purple jogging pants that created a unique - and slightly beautiful, in Wednesday's eyes - contrast to her white and pink hoodie.

"I still kinda wish I'd gotten some of my strawberry lemonade drink," she said with a sigh, plopping down on her bed in a sitting position. She grimaced at the bitter taste of coffee lining her mouth. "Your coffee definitely isn't a fair trade."

"And I wish coffee had been what I tasted instead of that dreadful explosion of sugar."

Enid crossed her arms. Wednesday was obviously wrong. Energy drinks might not have been the most health beneficial option, but they were certainly more exciting in flavor.

"You know..." Enid teased. "You could still come over here and taste it if you want."

"You're insufferable," Wednesday said with a huff. "But if I must."

"Pshh," Enid giggled. "I knew you wanted to kiss me!"

Wednesday scowled in response but glided over to the side of her bed and Enid moved her dangling legs apart so her girlfriend could stand between them.

They both inched closer, Wednesday breathing steadily and Enid smiling like crazy.

"Perhaps I do," Wednesday said.

She closed her eyes and leaned forward, enveloping Enid's lips with her own. She kissed her slowly, with Enid matching her exact pace, and gradually began dragging her tongue lightly across Enid's.

The werewolf made a small sound of joy that could either be a noise of pleasure or a giggle and nipped her gently across the lip.

Wednesday sunk into a deep haze and buried her hands in Enid's soft hair, holding her head from behind.

She could clearly taste the coffee - her coffee - now in her girlfriend's mouth, and she tried to absorb as much of it as she could to make up for her lost drink.

At some point Enid hopped off the bed to wrap her arms around Wednesday and the two slowly drifted across their shared room.

Enid brought her hands up to caress Wednesday's face, holding her in position and she savored the sweet strawberry-lemon flavor of her own lost beverage and gave the raven one last heavy kiss.

For once, Wednesday removed her hands but didn't step away from Enid's grip. She licked her lips with a satisfied expression.

"So..." Enid said after a moment, running her thumbs over Wednesday's sharp cheekbones. "Who won the argument?"

Notes:

Here's a random fun fact about this fic: the title hails partially from my weirdness and straight-to-the-point humor but also from Episode 6 of The Amazing Digital Circus, "They All Get Guns."

I hope you had as much fun reading this one as I did writing it
