It was 5:00 am in the morning when Jake had woken up to the sound of the alarm he had set on his phone piercing through his head as he shot up to turn it off. He groaned, running his hands down his face and walking to his bathroom.
When he arrived to the bathroom he reached to turn the shower head on, trying to get the temperature perfect. And when it was he started undressing, but when he looked into the mirror he spotted something that hadn’t been there before. Not a mole, not a beauty mark, nothing.. natural.
The palms of his hands were black.
His eyes widened slightly as he whipped his head down to stare at the spots, he remembered hearing about this and seeing everyone freak out over this kind of stuff, but he had little interest in the topic. He frowned knowing his friends at school would freak out over the black that now blended with his own skin.
He continued to undress and stepped in the shower, continuing his morning routine and getting prepared to see his friends at school in about an hour and a half.

When he stepped into the school and went to the library before classes started, he saw Albert waving his hand gesturing him to come and sit with him, Dani, Temp, and Denis.
As he sat down and put his backpack down along with him Dani caught sight of his palm and asked the dreaded question, “ Woah, Jake, did you get your soulmate mark? “ she stared him down. “ Yea, I don’t understand why that’s such a big deal- “ he was cut off, “ WOAH! I hope that i’m your soulmate. “ Albert joked and batted his eyelashes. Jake just rolled his eyes while the others might as well have full on belly laughed at the brunettes joke.
He deadpanned and stared at all of them, “ ‘kay it was NOT that funny guys. “ but smiled a little bit. “ Yea, yea. But seriously I wonder who your soulmate is? “ asked Temp while Jake just shrugged. “ I’ve got no clue, didn’t think someone would be capable of ending up with me. “ he joked around.
Dani scoffed “ That makes two of us, I guess. “ and Jake just glared at her. The thing about Jake was he was the last person in his friend group to get his soulmate mark. Which meant he endured constant jabs at that fact, he didn’t mind much though, he thought it was funny and adored his friends.
Dani had found her soulmate pretty easily, she was literally dating him so that was a piece of cake for her. Temp had some trouble, but eventually ended up finding out it was Laugh. Albert and Denis still hadn’t found theirs, but the rest of the group suspected that theirs were each others. Which just left Jake, who had finally gotten his own.
He wondered who she would be, and what she’d look like. He didn’t really care much, as long as she had a good personality. In the middle of his thinking, they decided it was a good time to start heading to classes now and departed from each other. He walked with Temp since they shared first period, science.
They walked in, headed to their desk, and put their stuff down, getting ready for a boring class of chemistry. He was subconsciously looking for other people who had just seemed to have also gotten their mark, but his search came up empty.
When the teacher brought up a project Temp and Jake had looked at each other in hopes that they’d be able to choose their partners, but unfortunately they were being assigned partners.
The teacher called Temp’s name and said some girl named Aphex, and when he was called the teacher had paired him up with “ Sketch “.
He had no idea who this dude was.
He didn’t even look familiar, like he literally hadn’t seen him in the class before.
But he digresses.
He got up reluctantly and headed to an empty desk next to the blonds. He immediately lightened up and introduced himself, “ Hi, i’m Sketch. “. The boy stared at him waiting for a response back, after s couple seconds Jake replied with, “ Uh, yeah, i’m Jacob but just call me Jake, please. “
Their project they were doing was just comparing how different brands of soap perform in different types of waters. Just boring chemistry stuff.
“ So, what do you like to do? “ Sketch asked all of a sudden. Jake genuinely thought for a moment, “ I hang out with my friends? “, and his reply sounded more like a question. Sketch didn’t seem to mind as he nodded while he poured all sorts of things Jake didn’t bother to read the labels of.
Soon class was coming to an end and everyone was cleaning their tables. “ Nice job bro! “ Sketch exclaimed as he put his fist out, which got left there as Jake didn’t notice and began to leave.
Sketch sat defeated, watching Jake’s backpack get smaller as he headed to his next class.

During lunch Sketch sat with his usual friend group, Laugh, Jandel, and Kaden. Laugh was talking about han assignment he had in Algebra 2, complaining that it was hell. When he was done talking Sketch decided to talk, “ I think I made a new friend! “ he exclaims.
Jandel looks surprised, “ Really? Who? “. “ His name is Jake! “ he said happily, and the others look happy for him as well. “ Well that’s good, it’s nice to expand your social group every now and then. “ says Kaden matter of factly.
“ Yea yea, tell us about him I guess. “ Laugh said while he jokingly waved Kaden off, while Kaden just folded his arms and frowned at him. “ Well, I mean, he seems kinda asocial. He only talked a little bit and didn’t accept my fist bump at the end of class. “ he frowned.
“ Also I think he’s friends with another kid in our class and wanted to be partners with him instead, I think his name is Temprist? “ Sketch said skeptically, “ That’s my soulmate! “ Laugh chimed in through his mouthful of food.
“ Woah, what a cool coincidence, yeah? “ asks Jandel. “ Yea! But guys I wanna say.. Jake’s lowkey kinda cute. “ , the second this comes out his mouth, Laugh jokingly groans, “ This is like the 4th person this week you said was cute. “ and gives Sketch the side eye.
“ No, I know. But he is! “ he asserted. Laugh just rolled his eyes while Kaden giggled. “ Maybe give it a week. “ said Jandel and laughed while Sketch quietly giggled with them.
And so what if he went home that night thinking about Jake? That was for him and only him to know.
