Chapter Text
Penny stepped out of a dollhouse, the nursery kids were out on break, and the teachers were supervising them. Penny first went towards the teachers desk, where Pumpkin laid ontop, in an orange frilly dress with a tiara.
Pumpkin's head lifted up, and he stared at Penny, his soft Irish accent coming out.
“Are we due for a meetin’?”
Penny nodded, “Any sight of the others?” Pumpkin pointed towards a plastic castle, “I know Spud and Colonel are in there.” Penny nodded, it was the usual routine that the toys followed. During break or the early morning, Penny would round the toys up with Pumpkin for a meeting.
“Right, you fetch the others.” Pumpkin slid out of the dress, the tiara clattering against the desk. His crotched feet hit the ground, the tiger reached a finger up and scratched his nose.
“I wish they wouldn’t put me in a dress…” He spoke softly, Penny set off, knocking the castle's door.
“TEN-HUT!” A voice cried out from the inside, Colonel opening the door, the nutcracker gave a salute and marched out, Spud a small potato sack bean bag came following after, sounding like he was holding in a sneeze.
“D-do you have to be so loud?!” Spud lamented, slightly annoyed, “the teachers and or kids could hear us!”
Penny shook her head, before then turning to a Barbie dollhouse, she knew who would be in there. Her scarf shifted as she stormed towards it, not even having the decency to knock.
Inside was Spot, a stuffed Dalmatian who was viewed as the resident cocky jackass, and there he was, unbuttoning the back of a Barbie dolls dress, he freezed when he saw Penny.
“Ya mind knocking?”
“I don’t care, meeting. NOW.” Penny barked slightly, turning back and storming off, the Barbie scurried off to fix her dress, leaving an irritated and annoyed Spot on her couch.
“Hey Baby!” Spot called out to Barbie, “come back!” When it was clear the Barbie wasn’t returning, Spot huffed slightly, and then stormed out. Spot walked past a wooden toy train, and then a raggedy Ann whose hair had been pulled out over the years. And then lastly a Pegasus who’s left wing was clipped off.
Penny stood in front of a bucket of Lego’s, she gripped a small green pipe that once belonged to a Mr. Potato head who was thrown out a while ago. Penny banged the pipe against the bucket, as if she was a Judge ordering the court.
“ATTENTION! EVERYONE!” Some of the more restless toys turned to face her, Spot took a seat in the back row, right next to Spud.
Spud looked up at him, “So, whadda ya think the meetings for?”
Spot shook his head dismissively, his ears rustling slightly as he did so.
Penny cleared her throat, “Alright, so it’s come to my attention that the nursery is planning to downsize some of us.”
This caused a collective gasp of disbelief, and horror from some of the toys. Pumpkin stood next to Penny, looking on as some of the toys reeled back with confusion, and to some who had been there for years, such as Ann, himself and Spud. This answer wasn’t good.
“I believe that there’s a chance some of us could be donated to other nursery’s, or charity shops”
One toy, a small dinosaur, spoke up.
“What if we get sent to the great beyond?…”
Penny seemed taken aback by this question, before quickly recovering.
“I heavily doubt that, some of us have-“
Pumpkin stepped forward, “most of us have been with this daycare for generations, and those of us have been through worse. There’s green pastures ahead for us, this is just a brief bump in the road.”
The Colonel stood up next, his wooden joints creaking as he did so, “Pumpkin is right! There’s zero chance after our service that we’d be sent to the great beyond” his tone came off as dismissive, “And it’s a myth!”
“That’s enough Colonel” Penny spoke up, “Listen, the great beyond isn’t a big threat. Just grip onto your accessories and it’ll all be okay. We guarantee it!”
That’s when Spot stood up, “I bet they're talking about getting rid of us!” He spoke, “the great beyond comes for us all! And we’ll all head there. Whether we like it or not.”
All of the toys abruptly screamed and scattered, some shoving past Penny and Pumpkin, rushing to the door of the room. Spud stepped forward first.
“Alright, we’ve gotta send the chess pieces out,” he turned to the Colonel, “Colonel, we need your men pronto!”
And on cue, the chess pieces approached the door, the pawns, the kings, and the horses marched forward, one of the kings turned to the Colonel, "Colonel! Do we have permission to march forward?”
The colonel nodded slightly, and the chess pieces, on cue, marched out of the door.
Penny, meanwhile, was shooting a glare at Spot, who was rather sadistically watching the scene.
“Your such an asshole,” Penny muttered to herself slightly.
