"So, what's the important news?" asked Meian as he watched Atsumu and Hinata stand awkwardly in front of their team.
"First off, we want you all to know that it won't affect the team," Hinata assured them.
Atsumu nodded in agreement. "We promise to be very professional when it comes to volleyball and the team."
"Okay…" Meian didn't see where this was going but was thinking maybe their PR team should be involved in whatever two were planning.
"We're dating." Hinata blurted out before he lost the nerve to tell them. The whole speech he had memorised had been completely forgotten.
The announcement was met with silence.
Their teammates stared at them with unreadable expressions. Osamu had told them they had nothing to worry about and that they should just be honest with their teammates and stop hiding their relationship like cowards. Atsumu was going to have words with his twin later because it totally looked like they had a problem with it. Was it too late to play it off as a joke? But that was the last thing he wanted to do. Atsumu didn't want to hide his relationship with Hinata any longer.
"We already knew that," Barnes said, confusedly.
"What?" exclaimed Atsumu and Hinata. It didn't make any sense to them how they were already aware of their relationship. The only one they had told was Osamu, and that was because Atsumu couldn't keep a secret from his twin, especially when said twin had teased him endlessly about his crush on Hinata.
"Were you trying to keep it a secret?" Tomas asked.
"You both did a terrible job," Sakusa stated.
"That's an understatement. Atsumu, you can never seem to keep his hands off Hinata for too long," Barnes said with a chuckle. It also wasn't difficult to notice how the two would always gravitate towards one another, no matter where they were.
Atsumu's face went red from embarrassment. "That's not true."
Hinata playfully elbowed his boyfriend in the side, "It kinda is, Tsumu." Not that he was complaining.
Sakusa rolled his eyes. "You're not any better, Hinata." He lost count of how many times he had seen him launch himself at the setter.
Hinata blushed and attempted to hide behind Atsumu, but he wouldn't let him.
"If I'm being honest, I thought this was going to be an engagement announcement," admitted Inunaki. He had never seen a more smitten couple, so it made sense to him that the two wouldn't wait long before getting married.
"M-marriage?" sputtered Hinata.
"We've o-only datin' for a-about two m-months," Atsumu hurriedly explained. His heart began to race at the thought of one day being able to call Hinata his husband.
"Wait. You can't be serious? I thought you got together not long after Hinata joined the team." Barnes would never forget how Atsumu's eyes lit up when he saw Hinata walk onto the court during tryouts.
Hinata couldn't even say a word and just stared at Barnes in complete shock because that would suggest the team thought they had been dating for nearly a year.
"Are ya pranking us?" Because Atsumu couldn't understand how he thought he and Hinata had been dating that long. Did he have feelings for Hinata back then? Yes, and if Atsumu was being honest with himself, he felt something for the redhead since they were seventeen, but he only got the courage to ask Hinata out recently.
"We should be the ones asking that," scoffed Barnes, because the thought that Atsumu and Hinata had been dating for about two months was unbelievable.
Tomas thought back to the many comments he had seen about the couple. "I even saw fans saying you two are cute together. Not would be ARE, like eight months ago. So, they also think you've been together for ages." And not to mention the amount of fan edits of Atsumu setting for Hinata. Tomas was pretty sure that on the rare occasion Hinata sets for Atsumu, those fans lose their minds.
"You're both idiots," muttered Sakusa. But he did have to admit the 'dating before they were even dating' trope did suit them well.
Bokuto, who had usually been quiet, finally spoke up, "Are you telling me we didn't go on a double date last month?"
"N-no," stuttered Atsumu. He just thought Akaashi and Bokuto had invited them over for dinner. They hadn't mentioned it was a double date. Atsumu tried to comprehend how obvious he and Hinata had been the last two months and apparently how oblivious they had been before that.
Bokuto's shoulders sank. How was he going to tell Akaashi? His boyfriend had been very happy that they found another couple they could hang out with. Yeah, Hinata and Atsumu were their friends, but it was different. He didn't know how to explain it. What if they didn't want to go on double dates? Bokuto didn't want to think about that.
"We'd love to go on a double date with you and Akaashi-san, right, Tsumu?" Hinata said quickly when he noticed that Bokuto had looked hurt. He knew they should've told Bokuto and Akaashi that night.
"Of course," Atsumu agreed instantly.
A grin broke across Bokuto's face. "Great. Let's plan one for the weekend. Keiji wants to try a new recipe." He was relieved that he wouldn't have to tell Akaashi that they wouldn't be able to go on double dates with Atsumu and Hinata again.
"What's the hold-up? Practice started five minutes ago," Foster inquired when he entered the changing room. It wasn't like them to be all late for practice.
"These two had an announcement," Meian said as he gestured towards Atsumu and Hinata.
"Oh. Congratulations. When is the wedding?"
To Foster's confusion, most of the team burst out laughing. Hinata and Atsumu took that as their moment to escape. They knew they had promised their relationship wouldn't affect the team, but there was no way they could face them in practice after what their coach said.
Inunaki took note to relay everything that was said back to Osamu, because how could none of this be included in a future best man speech?
